    3. There is also a map of the town lots, the names of the Newark first settlers from Branford and Milford, and the locale of their lots at: http://www.altlaw.com/edball/newark_map.htm? If you click on "Wait for the image to load - then press here for the full-sized map" that is underneath the small map image, it gives you a super-duper sized map that is excellent - and easy to read :) Alison ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 05, 2001 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [CTNEWHAV] Re: Branford Covenant > In a message dated 10/3/01 8:54:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > [email protected] writes: > > > http://members.aol.com/dtrofatter/settler.htm > > Recent messages have mentioned that settlers from Branford and Milford moved > to Newark and settled there. 3. To celebrate the second anniversary of my RIGGS Surname Study web-site, I've extended it to include initial details of the RIGGS Families in Devon, England - for those of you waiting for similar details of Dorset, England, these are far more extensive to code and will be added next Spring. More detail on Edward of Roxberry includes photos of the churches in England where he was baptised and married, and an early plan of Milford CT showing where his son Sergeant Edward Riggs lived. I've also added extensive detail on Sergeant Edward Riggs, thanks to a wealth of information generously shared by Don Blauvelt, a fellow subscriber to this List - thank you Don ! Apart from narrowing down Sergeant Edward Riggs's death (a year later than Wallace states), this has enabled me to formulate a reasonable assumption, which Don supports, that he moved to Wethersfield, CT after his marriage to Elizabeth Rose in Roxbury. The New Plantation and Church Covenant was signed 20 Jan 1667. Rev. Pierson and his followers left for Newark about Oct 1666. 1. [CTNEWHAV] Mack Sennett flim director
    2. I'm not quite sure where to look, but I was just informed that the silent film director Mack Sennett lived for a time in Connecticut prior to or at the beginning of his film career. My contact told me that his family at some point moved to Connecticut from Quebec, Canada, but where exactly in Connecticut is unclear. A possible starting point is in or near to Bridgeport, as my grand-aunt Myra Donnelly b.1882 - d. 1929 was an actress working in Bridgeport at the time Mack Sennett started making films(c. 1907). When her mother died in 1909 she left town to pursue her acting career. My family has long claimed she acted in a number of Mack's films both in the greater New York area as well as out on the West Coast. Does anyone know of the Sennett family living in Connecticut? 3. Toni, Thank you so much for your very kind offer! One of the researchers I am working with was on Long Island this past summer, so I think we have probably found most of the records in Southold and Setauket/Brookhaven. Because of time constraints, we were never able to determine if there are any Setauket/Brookhaven Church records available for the period 1680-1720. The references we found were all in the books of town records. And they don't contain births, marriages, etc. Any early church records in that area would be the one thing I am interested in finding out about! At that time we were not aware of the FANCEY variant for FANSHAW and FANCHER, so may have breezed by any reference that might be meaningful today. I will see what I can find out about those early Branford records going to Newark. If you could look your list of those who signed the new church covenant, I'd appreciate it very much. BTW, since you are researching WHEADON and PAGE, William FANCHER's wife Thankful THOMSON was the daughter of Hannah WHEADON. His 1728/9 Branford land purchase in the "Gussett" bounded Nathaniel and Daniel PAGE's property. Thanks for your help! 2. Early in Branford history, there was a religious division and the Rev Abraham Pierson and a good portion of his flock left Branford and moved to New Jersey, founding what is now Newark. They apparently took the very earliest records with them. I have no idea whether they are available as records of early Newark, but if you should decide to pursue that angle, please let me know what you find out. This is off the top of my head so I can't remember the year of the split. But soon after, those that remained in Branford signed a new church covenant and that was in the first volume of land records. I have a copy of the list and more details if you want me to look them up. 3. For what its is worth, Southold was once part of the Colony of New Haven, sometime in the mid-1600's. 3. Alison- I live on Long Island very close to Southold which is about 30 minutes east of me, Brookhaven and Setauket are North and South of each other by 30 minutes and Brookhaven is about 15 minutes west of me. Is there anything I can do for you from here concerning those areas? 1. Re: [CTNEWHAV] David & Mary Bassett
    2. Hi Judy, Thanks for your response. I come from a long line of Bassetts from Milford but, this is not one of them. The problem is that everyone named Bassett in that period of time named their sons David. I have 3 generations of them already in my previous line. I am hoping to make a trip to CT again and do plan on going to the Historical Society. Can't really write to them because I don't know how to differentiate all the Davids. Thanks again for writing. June
