3. Bob, Yes, I have seen that. The names I am looking for are Joseph and Rose Lipson and son Abraham N. Lipson, of course Abraham was not born until 1884. I have no idea if any of these other Lipsons are related. I did find a Joseph Lipson in Bristol, CT on the 1920 census but again, wrong one. He was too young to be my great-grandfather. Could be a son of Joseph and brother to Abraham, but I don't know. Thank you trying to help. 3. Judy - It was not uncommon for births to not be registered until documentation was necessary for something - particularly among non english speaking immigrants. My mother in law & 2 of her sisters (Lithuanian) born early in the century were later registered as "delayed births" with proper identification and witnesses so that they could obtain birth certificates, passports, etc. Grit ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 30, 2001 7:45 AM Subject: Re: [CTNEWHAV] Birth Certificates/Register > I was told that some births went unregistered. 2. I was told that some births went unregistered. My aunt who would have been well past 100 now knew the exact place {street address as well as town} of her birth but sadly, no birth certificate was ever found. I have a birth cert from an aunt born 1895 in New Britain which states that a $10 penalty was charged for failure to register a birthwithin the first week of the month next after the birth. I have a hard time understanding that and I expect my family did also since they spoke no English. In a letter written by my aunt, she states that it was the midwifes responsibility to resister the birth. I do not know how true that is. Well, my point is: If the family did not get around to registering the birth in a timely fashion, perhaps they did not have the $10 fine so never registered the birth. Just a thought.

1. Re: [CTNEWHAV] Birth Certificates/Register
2. The state-wide indexes don't begin until after his year of birth. While births are missed every year, it was quite common for all births to be registered. Some things to look for. Jastremski can be spelled several different ways. Births in 1884 are often listed as simply "male" Jastremski Check the records of ST. STANISLAUS CHURCH; New Haven, CT 06511 9 Eld St. (203) 562-2828. Note that this parish's cemetery is in Meriden, CT. You might also check those records. The parish register probably will give the town they lived in too. When did his parents become citizens? You can check their naturalization papers to give additional clues as to where they were living. (Records are at the NARA Branch in Waltham, MA). All the best, Tom Thomas Jay Kemp << Subj: [CTNEWHAV] Birth Certificates/Register Date: 10/29/2001 6:54:57 PM Mountain Standard Time From: [email protected] (Pam Jastremski) Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] I have been looking for either a birth certificate or a register showing my grandfather's birth for some time with no results. On his social security application he stated he was born in New Haven, New Haven, CT. I have had three separate checks of the records in New Haven with no results. One source said he was born in Bristol, CT, I inquired there and was told there was no record there either. The birth was in 1884. Was it common for births of that period to go unregistered in CT? Is there a state wide source for births? I am looking for any suggestions on how I might find this information. Pam Jastremski Florida >>

1. [CTNEWHAV] John P. Soderlund and his descendents
2. DEBORAH HANNA
3. I am looking for the family of John P. Soderlund, of MEriden) and his descendents...family, daughter Belinsa, b. 1891, son Clarence, b. 1895, daughter Ethel, b. 1896. I have traced John P. to Meriden in 1903, (along with Peter ..all in the same area of Meriden) and I think I have him on a ships list as Jonas Peter, born 1860, in Sweden ,son of Pehr Eric Soderlund (Glans)...my great grandfather. I have been searching for Pehr (Peter Glantz's) Swedish connections. Peter had a son Charles, my grandfather, who went on to marry Ethel Ives of Meriden. Peter was born Soderlund, in 1835, in Tuna PArish, Sweden and became Peter Glans when he went into the military. He came to America, along with Jonas Peter, his son, a stepdaughter, and his wife Kate Locks. (In Sweden she wasKarin Carlsdotter, daughter of Carl Lax). Does anyone know the history of the Soderlund family of Meriden? Charles was my grandfather..he did well, although Peter did not have a happy life. Peter died in! 1902, Kate in 1900. Family history says that Charles had a brother. His brothers and sisters born in America, all died. I have traced back to Peter's father and mother too...and have found a first wife for PEter, in Sweden, and a 1st husband for Kate too. NOw I would like to compare notes with anyone else who knows about the Swedish community in Meriden at the turn of the century. Thanks for any info. 1. [CTNEWHAV] Re: Branford Records
2. I am from Branford and have spent much time working at the Branford town hall in the Branford land records researching Fowlers and Frisbies. I have never heard anyone say either that the earliest Branford records are missing or that they were taken to Newark by Pierson and his flock in 1666. Nevertheless they are very spotty compared to the neighboring town of Guilford's records and it does seem that much has been lost over the years...still they do begin fairly early and there are two volumes of Volume One and Volume Two. I asked there yesterday when the earliest records begin and they say the 1640s; there surely is a copy of the original Covenant from 1644; the records are indexed and there is a typed transcript of the earliest volume and a typed index which are available at both the Town Hall and the James Blackstone Memorial Public Library in Branford. The Probate records are another matter. The earliest ones used to be in the New Haven Hall of Records but have been moved to the Connecticut State Library...these would be those records from the beginning to about 1722. Branford then became part of the Probate District of Guilford and the Guilford Town Hall, Probate Office, holds the Probate Records of Branford from 1722 through 1850. After that Probate Records are held by the Probate Office in Branford. For more specific information...I would contact Jane Bouley (Branford Town Historian), Tootsie Laske (Branford Town Clerk), or David Driessens (Archivist of the First Congregational Church). The Church also has early records. Janet Riesman

3. Hi all, Just minutes ago I received word that I am now discussion coordinator for the SPAM list at Rootsweb. Everyone is encouraged (read, encouraged ... NOT required) to join the list since we family historians have our select share of SPAM problems. This will be my primary list now to discuss Family Discovery and their associate domains and any other of their ilk that comes along to plague us! :) Also, any SPAM-related issue is permitted for discussion. Since many of you send my Family Discovery messages out to your friends, relatives and lists, you might also want to let them know I'm cranking this group up. It's one that's been on Rootsweb's books but hasn't been used for years. I hope to make this list one that nobody wants to miss out on. To join, simply address a new email form to: [email protected] (for individual messages) OR [email protected] (for the digest) Put the word subscribe in the top line of the body and mail it. This list may be super quiet until Family Discovery (or anyone else) decides to begin their onslaughts, or it may be high-trafficked. We won't know until we all come together and see who's been receiving what. If you decide you don't want to join the SPAM list, don't worry. I won't leave you high and dry, and uninformed! I'll still notify everyone when a disreputable sort begins their deceptions. It'll just be an encapsulation of information like before, rather than discussions. I hope this finds each of you having a MAGNICICENT Monday! :) Colleen

1. [CTNEWHAV] LEE Family -- Naugatuck (1890 & Late)
2. Joann Jameson
3. Monroe LEE and his wife Rebecca LYNN moved to Naugatuck, CT from Mahanoy City, Schuylkill, PA, around 1890. Rebecca was the daughter of John LYNN (nee KEMP) and his wife Catharine "Katie" BURNHAM or BURNS, who were both born in England, and who both came to the US as children. The following data is from from the 1900 census and from their marriage record: 1. Monroe LEE, b Aug 1863, PA, mar 6 Mar 1886, Shenandoah, Schuylkill, PA + Rebecca LYNN, b Sep 1865, PA 2. Pearl LEE, b Sep 1887, Schuylkill Co, PA 2 Richard LEE, b Sep 1897, CT (probably Naugatuck) In 1900 they were living in Naugatuck, and Monroe was a shoemaker at the rubber mill. Living with them was Rebecca's widowed mother, Catharine LYNN. According to the census data, Rebecca had given birth to 6 children and only 2 were still living in 1900. Two of Rebecca's brothers, Joseph LYNN and Austin LYNN, also made the move to CT from PA, and I have posted information about them in a separate message. I would love to hear from descendants of this LEE family. I am not a LEE, but I have done extensive research on Rebecca's LYNN family in the US and England (in England their name was KEMP) which I would be happy to share. Joann Jameson San Leandro, CA
