The federal Census for 1840 and earlier listed only the names of the head of each household. It did not list the names of other members of the household, but counted how many persons were present in each age category, and indicated the numbers (1, 2, 5, etc.--these are not check marks), such as 1 male age 0-5 years, 1 male age 40-45 years, 3 females age 10-15, etc. Thus (and I have not looked at the North Branford entry but am relying only on your text here), Robert Byington would be the head of a household that contained several persons. The numbers in the columns to the right would tell you how many people were in each age category. These are not checkmarks, but are the numeral "1." From this information you can almost picture how many little kids, how many teens, how many old people, lived in Robert Byington's household. There is no way to know from the 1840 Census how many of these other people were relatives, boarders, hired hands, in-laws, apprentices, or children "bound out" by their own families and working in the household, etc. The next entry down, that for Harmon R. Byington, would be the next household--perhaps living next door or in the upstairs apartment or the back apartment or the cabin out back. If no other persons were indicated in columns to the right of Harmon, then he lived alone in his own household. The 1840 Census would not have indicated if Harmon and Robert were brothers, cousins, father and son, etc. You would find this kind of information in Census records of 1850 and after, but unfortunately not 1840. If you can find the household of Robert Byington in the 1850 Census, you will find more helpful information. If Robert and Harmon are listed as persons of about the same age and you can find their baptismal records, you will know if they had the same parents. If one is much older than the other, they are probably of different generations and could be father/son, uncle/nephew, etc. The fact that some female names are listed (as heads of households) in the 1840 Census should be no surprise--they were probably widows. Below is a summary of your request and our response. We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 48 hours. Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you. Subject --------------------------------------------------------------- Removal of Aqueduct, How do I Discussion Thread --------------------------------------------------------------- Response (Wendy) - 11/19/2001 01:12 PM Hello Family Tree Maker Customer, I am sending this message to everyone who has asked about the Aqueduct file as it seems that a mass email was sent over the weekend that is causing great concern among Family Tree Maker 9.0 customers. Please read the entire contents of this message and feel free to forward it to all of those who may have been on the mailing list who started notifying people over the weekend. The aqueduct.txt file is originally set up for our beta testers with their consent to help us track and log any problems they encounter while testing Family Tree Maker. After beta testing is completed, our programmers here at Genealogy.com then deactivate the file. Unfortunately, creation of the aqueduct.txt file was not deactivated for the final Family Tree Maker Version 9.0 release. Since we became aware of this issue, we have found a simple solution. Please know that Genealogy.com does not have access to the information logged by the file. We would only have had access if you had specifically sent it to us by email. We have created an update that all customers using version 9.0 should download and install. In addition to the Aqueduct issue, this update also addresses an issue that was brought to our attention after Family Tree Maker 9.0 was produced and released where source citations may be inadvertently altered by utilizing certain functions within the program. In order to protect your family file, please download and install this update today. Please note that there are 2 versions of the update. The proper one for you to use depends upon where you purchased your copy of Family Tree Maker version 9.0. If you bought your copy of Family Tree Maker version 9 directly from Genealogy.com or it came in an envelope, download the update from http://www.Genealogy.com/update/. If you bought Family Tree Maker from a retail store or it came in a box, download the update from http://www.Genealogy.com/newinfo/. All of this information is available in further detail by visiting our Online Help Center at www.genealogy.com/help. Thank you so much! I did have the Fairfield info but the rest of it is new. I found it interesting that Jehiel, who first married Pene DAVIS, was married later to Elizabeth WHEELER. Jehiel died in Stanbridge, Lower Canada in 1803-4 and in the Inventory of Estate, Elizabeth mentions her son-in-law Joseph HIND/E. No mention of the daughter's name though. Now I see, some of your data mentions the surname HINE.......hmmmm, I just wonder? Thank you for the great leads. Margaret in NV
On the death certificate of my Edwin Minor Byington (born in North Branford May 24, 1845 and died in New Haven March 7, 1907) it states his parents are: Darling H. Byington born 1820ish in North Branford Martha Benton born 1818ish in North Branford I have followed Martha through the census and have this information: 1850: North Branford Darling age 31 Martha age 32 Edwin Minor age 5 Charles age 3 months (he died as an infant i believe) 1860: North Branford Darling age 40 Martha age 42 Edwin age 15 Ellen age 8 Mary J. age 4 Caroline age 2 Abigail Byington age 73 (*maybe* Darling's mother) 1870: New Haven, 7th Ward Martha age 52 Ellen age 18 Jennie M. age 14 Carrie age 12 Mary Benton age 63 (so cool now this name makes sense!!) Diantha Page age 57 1880: New Haven Martha age 62 Edwin Minor age 35 Harriett (Dudley) Edwin's wife age 28 Caroline age 22 Ellen age 28 Mary J. age 24 Frederick Richard (Edwin and Harrietl's son) age 2 Mary (Edwin and Harriett's daughter) age 5 Then thats all I have of her so maybe she died after 1880. If *any* of this looks familiar I would love to hear from you!! Many thanks, Grace [email protected]
I know that I tried to call Borderbund (makers of the FTM program) and when I asked to speak to someone who could tell me about the aqueduct file on the FTM, I was told that I had the wrong number and (rudely) hung up on. SO, I tried to call Aqueduct but they have either moved or gone out of business. Number has been disconnected and even information did not have a number for them. Until the post that it was on FTM 7 I was going to delete 9 and go back to 8. Now my question is..... does anyone recall reading in the agreement that they were going to do this????
Further info. The aqueduct.txt file is not actually being sent anywhere, just created and updated. There is a replacement aqueduct.dll file and an excuse at genealogy.com The replacement dll stops the text file from being updated and the old aqueduct.txt filecan also be safely deleted. Coleen and Listers, Thank you for the information about FTM version 9. An earlier version also had a trojan, and FTM took a lot of flak for it. They cleaned up their act.....and are in the mud again, apparently. I use version 8, which is clean, and I may never upgrade again with them. TO OUR NEWEST LIST MEMBERS ~~ On behalf of the entire list, I'd like to extend a most hearty welcome to those of you who joined the list this past week. We are very glad to have you with us and hope you'll stay and remain a part of our online family. As soon as you're comfortable with us and the list, please send in your list-surname lines so we can all see how we're related to you. We do not have a fancy format for sending in records or queries to the list. Post as many as you wish! If the data has anything to do with our list-surname ancestors that might help someone, please feel free to post it. Every scrap of information is appreciated. FAMILY DISCOVERY IS AT IT AGAIN These people just don't give up, do they? It seems they've begun a new campaign, this time under their GenRelated pseudonym. Please pass the word so we can thwart yet another of their attempts. Newbies, those of us who are experienced Web genealogists, know already to steer clear, far and wide, from anything sent by Family Discovery or their sister sites, one being GenRelated. Now, you need to know it, too. These people are scammers. Are you new to the family? Please send a message to me <[email protected]> and I'll send a copy of my all-too-familiar messages regarding these people. Should you receive a message from <FamilyDiscovery.com> or <[email protected]>, please forward it to me with the headers. Although it's over a year-old now, an ongoing effort is being done to get them shut down. (Actually, as a combined force, we've been more successful at getting them kicked off from their various ISPs than anything else. At least when they're offline, they can't rip anyone off!) FAMILY TREE MAKER, VERSION 9: A WARNING It has come to my attention that Family Tree Maker may be up to no good with the latest version (9) of their genealogy program. Since I don't use FTM with any degree of proficiency (I use PAF), I'm passing along this warning by way of copy and paste. Those of you who use FTM will want to read this carefully: "Mattel, the parent company of FTM has included tracking software in Version 9 which keeps track of everything you do on the internet and sends a log of your surfing habits to Mattel every time you log on. The log file is called "aqueduct" and can be found in the root directory of your C drive. I have deleted the file and gone back to version 8. "I discovered {this] quite by accident. In an unrelated attempt to fix one of my screwups on my hardrive, I discovered the file called "aqueduct" and opened it as I didn't know what it was. I discovered that it was a log of all my surfing habits and I now know, it covered the period from when I installed the FTM 9 upgrade to the date I discovered it and deleted it. I didn't realize it was a FTM by product until I tried to open FTM (after deleting aqueduct) and I got an error message saying "Aqueduct" was missing -- it seems that without the file, FTM version 9 will not run at all. Since I detest tracking software of any kind, I uninstalled FTM version 9 and reinstalled FTM version 8. Note: You will have to open and rename your database backup copy as any database file that you opened and stored in version 9 will be useless." I won't mention the person's name here since our messages go into public archives. However, if you use FTM and want to know who has issued this warning, please write me offline and I'll pass the address along to you. Or, if there are many of you wanting the name and email addy, will send your names and addies to the person so s/he can post to you. One way or another, you will be put in contact, if that's your desire. :) DID YOU KNOW ...? ... turkeys originated in North and Central America, and evidence indicates that they have been around for over 10 million years? ... that out of the 102 Pilgrims who came to America in the Mayflower, just 51 survived to participate in the "First Thanksgiving?" Ninety Wampanoag Indians were at that first feast. ... that the first Thanksgiving lasted for three days and was called a "harvest feast" by Massasoit, the Wampanoag Indian chief? ... that the Pilgrims didn't use forks at the first feast (Thanksgiving) in 1621? They used a knife, a spoon, a large napkin and their fingers, and might have shared plates and drinking vessels. ... that according to the Guiness Book of World Records, the largest dressed weight (cooked, with dressing) recorded for a turkey is 39.09 kg (86 lb.) on December 12, 1989? (I wonder how long it took to cook?) ... more than 45 million turkeys are cooked and eaten during Thanksgiving? ... that nobody knows for certain that turkeys were eaten at the first feast? Then how *did* the turkey become the main course? One story tells of how Queen Elizabeth of 16th century England was chowing down on roast goose during a harvest festival. When news was delivered to her that the Spanish Armada had sunk on it way to attack her beloved England, the queen was so pleased that she order a second goose to celebrate the great news. Thus, the goose became the favorite bird at harvest time in England. When the Pilgrims arrived in America from England, roasted turkey replaced roasted goose as the main cuisine because wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese. ... that it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representation of our country... the turkey is a much more respectable bird and a true original native of America?" ... that George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, but it was President Lincoln who, in 1863, made the day official by proclaiming the last Thursday in November as a national day of "Thanksgiving?" ... that "Jingle Bells," the popular Christmas song, was actually written for Thanksgiving? The song was composed in 1857, by James Pierpont, and was originally called "One Horse Open Sleigh." Family ... it's what we're all about. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. When the Pilgrims arrived in America from England, roasted turkey replaced roasted goose as the main cuisine because wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese. ... that it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the representation of our country... the turkey is a much more respectable bird and a true original native of America?" ... that George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, but it was President Lincoln who, in 1863, made the day official by proclaiming the last Thursday in November as a national day of "Thanksgiving?" ... that Jingle Bells, the popular Christmas song, was actually written for Thanksgiving? The song was composed in 1857, by James Pierpont, and was originally called One Horse Open Sleigh. Family ... it's what we're all about. Thank you for allowing me to spend this time with you today. I wish each of you a week filled with health, productivity, fun, and above all, filled with love and inner peace. Happy Thanksgiving! :) ) ( ) _.-~~-. (@\'--'/. Colleen ('``.__.'`) `..____.'
Hi everyone, For those of you who posted to the list earlier today, Rootsweb list mail was down for approximately 12 hours from about 3:30 AM to about 3:30 PM MST today (Sunday, 11/18/01). The unfortunate part is that any mail sent to the lists during that time period was lost since it wasn't queued. So you will need to resend anything you sent that didn't get through to the lists. I'll be resending today's Sunday Morning Coffee out directly following this message. I wish you all a WONDERFUL week! I am wondering how to interrpret the 1840 Census for North Branford. There is an entry: Robert Byington, then underneath him is Harmon R. Byington. In the columns for people at what ages Robert has many checks for ppl different ages and Harmon has no checks. Who is Harmon and why is he listed and no one else in the family? Above and below him they actually seem to list all the peopl ein the family because I see female and male names. So, is Harmon another Byington adult living at that residence, one of Robert's kids? What have you all found as to the rhyme and reason the transcribers had when taking the 1840 census? -Grace
Hello Listers, I do hope someone on this list can connect with the above. When I first found my 5th ggrandfather, Jehiel SMITH, I thought "Great, Jehiel is an unusual name and now it should be easy". Not so, I have found out:)! There are a number of Jehiel SMITH's in that time frame and I am having a heck of a time sorting them out. My latest clue (which may or may not be a connection) is the following: "Esther SMITH, daughter of Jehiel SMITH, b. 1751 in Cheshire, CT". Esther is a common name in the family and I am hoping someone will connect with her. Thank you, for your time. Margaret in NV
well, there are records earlier than this and some later...i picked up one that was 1857...it depends on the town > > If you need an index from 1897 on, contact the CT Health Department in > Hartford. Before 1897, there really isn't a central index. The Barbour > collection covers 1650 - 1850. >

You can order the New Haven death indexes from the LDS church nearest you. I've got one on loan now. They go back to the 1600s. I found my ancestors who died in 1850 and 1882. Only problem is then you have to order another microfilm to get the actual date, etc. The catalog is at www.familysearch.org but they have a rather roundabout way of organizing them. You need to enter Connecticut, then New Haven, then vital records, etc. It costs about $3.25 per microfilm.
