    1. [CTNEWHAV] CT Genealogy Research really isn't that bad!
    2. dgonthier
    3. Hello, Yes, CT does have a state law restricting access to birth records less than 100 years old to members of accredited genealogical societies. The CT State Library's webpage has a list of accredited genealogical societies and links to the societies' websites (http://www.cslib.org/genesoc.htm) . Some of the groups have modest annual fees, others are a bit more. The law was intended to protect privacy and prevent identity theft and I haven't heard of any efforts to abolish the law. I am a member of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists Inc. and with my membership card have been granted access to each Town Clerk's office where I've attempted to do research. Most are open during regular business hours although some such as New Haven have restricted hours for researchers. I have requested and received several New Haven records by sending a brief letter of request, the $5 fee and a photocopy of my CSG membership card. In each case, though, I have had a specific date for the birth or marriage record I was requesting. I also have done research at the New Haven Town Clerk's office. It is open only for 2-1/2 hours on Wednesday mornings, it is crowded and there is virtually no table space to work. Expect to work while standing. I live on the west coast so do most of my CT record requests by mail. Each town is different but it has been my experience that most mail requests are filled promptly if I do the following: Send a brief letter of request that clearly and concisely explains my needs and enclose a check for the appropriate fee, a photocopy of my CSG card and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The fee for certified copies of birth, marriage and death certificates is generally $5 although some towns will provide uncertified copies for 50 cents or $1. Call the town clerk to verify fees. The Connecticut State Library is a FANTASTIC place to do research, one of the most fruitful resources in my experience. The library staff is not able to undertake individual genealogical research but is extremely helpful to those able to visit the library. They do have some search services available for a fee. Please see the library's website at http://www.cslib.org/handg.htm for information about its resources and services. Many of the records available at the state library have been microfilmed and are available for a small rental fee at any of the many Mormon Family History Centers located throughout the country. Hope this helps, Diane [email protected]

    3. North Haven's records are fully accessible! The clerks there are cooperative and helpful and quick in getting things done! There's a small distance and a world of difference between North Haven and New Haven, CT! Melody MaryLynn McCloskey wrote: > What? I just sent for my great grandfather's BC in > North Haven. 3. Hi Grace, I had the same difficulty and was told to " come in on Wednesday morning between 9am and 11:30, or hire a researcher". Well, I AM within driving distance here in MA, but that would mean getting up at 4am to do it or staying overnight in CT. I complained to Michael Lynch, the head of V.R. and received a letter of apology AND the information I was seeking (months and months after having written). I DID get there to do my own research on a Wed morning (the only time the office is open to the public for research. Yes, only 2 1/2 hours per week!) and must say that Mr. Lynch was very nice and very understanding. And, there is NO space to research and the clerks there are very busy trying to use the same space and books that you are and the records are not in the best shape. So, in their defense, I can understand the seemingly unbending attitude. BUT, we deserve to access our ancestor's information! It is a difficult business at best. The CT State Library has some of the same information, but there again, you must hire a researcher to get it for you. I would ask someone on this list who lives in CT if they would be willing to do a lookup or get a record copied for you when they next go for their own research. Be patient and grateful for their willingness to help that comes from their own love of genealogy. Offer to pay them for all expenses incurred. That way it is still more affordable than hiring a researcher. When all else fails, hire a professional. That's my best suggestion and my own story with accessing CT information. I hope it will be helpful to anyone looking for family there. Melody Masi elizabeth godfrey wrote: > I know your frustration. I had the same problem. 3. I know your frustration. I had the same problem. Went to the Woodbridge, Conn Town Clerk for information on my great grandparents. She said because I was not a certified genealogest I could not have the info. Conn. has some kind of crazy law. Perhaps you could find the info from copies of the records made by the Morman Church. They went to every town and city (years ago) and photocopied all the records. If no luck, send a letter to the Town Clerk, certified, and cite the "Right to Know Law" in Conn. You will have to go on line under Conn., then get the RSA#. Also, perhaps send an e-mail to the New England Gen. Society, in Boston, and ask where and how you can get these records. I have to leave right now for a Dr.s apt. But if you have no luck, I just copied the New Eng. Gen. & Hist. Society web site. I can give it to you if you can't get yoiur info. 3. What? I just sent for my great grandfather's BC in North Haven. He's been dead since the early 60s and was born in 1896. I shouldn't expect to receive it? Geez, Cuyahoga County in Ohio has an online database of marriage records and I brought up my parents marriage from 1960 right on the internet! 3. Margaret, Go to the US Patent and Trademark Office webiste and do a search by patent number. You can order good copies of the patent papers by mail. The website has information. Cost was $3 when I did so two years ago. What is available at the USPTO website (and at regional USPTO libraries in the United States) generally are abstracts of each patent. You can receive the complete patent document by ordering through the USPTO in Washington DC. My great-grandfather, Frederick Wilson Marshall, was living in the Westville section of New Haven in 1900 when he was granted a patent for an improved Spoke Nipple (the little metal doohickey that attaches a spoke to a bicycle wheel). The patent papers are interesting (3 pages of precise drawings and descriptions of the spoke nipple) and would be well worth adding to your family papers. 3. Have you tried searching Tory records? I know there is an organization in Canada which is equal to our SAR & Dar. They have great records. you might pick up your British births thru them. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianne" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 12:05 AM Subject: [CTNEWHAV] CANDE Caleb b 1743 > Hi, > I am wondering if anyone has found any proof that any of the sons of > Caleb CANDE (1st), 1722-1777, were indeed, veterans of the Revolutionary > War. 3. I just posted a reply, then went back and reread your message. Capt. Woodbridge has a great deal of info . Try the New Haven Historical Soc; the books written by Jacobus. He compiled volumns on early Conn families. Also the Conn. Genealogical Society. I know I have seen info on Woodbridge families. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 10:43 PM Subject: Re: [CTNEWHAV] Robert STEVENS (1823-1892) New Haven, CT > Dear Ryan, > Would you have a Lt. 3. Hi, Just read your query on the Ruggles family in New Haven. My Aunt, Irene Clark was adopted by a Mr. and Mrs. Albert and Florence ( Ruggles I believe)Pope who lived in, I believe, Oxford, Conn. I rememver visiting them as a child (1940's) They lived on lasd that originally belonged to the Blackburn family. On this same property was the famous "Blackburn Tavern". I am aware there is also a Historical Society in Oxford, Woodbridge, and most of the little towns surrounding New Haven. Hope this helps.
