Hello. I'm researching a SMITH family who lived in Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT from 1866 on. Joseph SMITH was born April 24, 1842 in Portsmouth. He may have had a brother named "Mawlin" SMITH, born abt. 1840. (I'm not sure of the spelling.) "Mawlin" SMITH married Mary Jane SKINNER, born abt. 1845 in Ontario. Joseph had a sister named Mary SMITH who married a man named NORRIS. Joseph's father was James SMITH, born in Scotland. Joseph SMITH came to the US (Connecticut) in 1866. He married Mary Elizabeth BANNISTER, born in 1847 in Canada, abt. 1872. He may have married someone before he married her because I found him on the 1870 census, living with Jane SMITH, born in CT. The fact that he married Mary Elizabeth BANNISTER in 1872 or 73 makes me think his first wife died. Joseph SMITH worked for the CT Hospital for the Criminally Insane for 50 yrs. - 1866 until his death in 1916. He belonged to Lodge I.O.O.F. and Christ Church. I believe that some of Joseph SMITH's family stayed in Ontario. In his obit. in 1916, it said his sister Mary NORRIS still lived in Portsmouth. Do you recognize this family? Please contact me.
