Nancy - There are quite a few names under BAILEY, BAILY, BAYLEY, BALEY only one Martin (your "Elusive"): p. 133 Martin E. Bailey and Sarah M. Stevens both of Deep River were married on the 31 day of March 1844 - by me Russell Jennings. There is a paragraph in the preface, which I quote: "The earliest vital records of Saybrook Colony are scattered through the first six volumes of the Saybrook Land Records. Volumes 1, 1A, 2 and 3 follow and contain only vital records. At a town meeting in 1648 the original colony was divided into quarters. This was the basis of the later separation of towns. Through the years the towns separated from the parent town of Saybrook -- Lyme in 1665, Chester in 1836, Westbrook in 1840, Essex in 1852 (the name of the town was Old Saybrook until 1854 when a new town of Old Saybrook was separated from it and the 1852 Old Saybrook changed its name to Essex). Therefore, in 1852 all that remained of the original colony of Saybrook was the village known as Deep River and Winthrop. This was the town of Saybrook until 1947 when it officially became Deep River. For our purposes the vital Records of Deep River are included in this section. It is believed that Deep River got its name from a deep river that had to be forded on the way to Hartford. Today the deep river is a small stream." If you have other Bailey names, I'd be happy to look further. JanetRudd in Illinois
