JONES Had Been a Fisherman of Door County for Nearly 40 Years Jared A. Jones, for nearly forty years a fisherman in the waters surrounding this county, died at his home in the city Sunday morning, death being due to cancer, from which he suffered for may years. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. E. J. Symons officiating. The Odd Fellows had charge of the burial. Deceased was born at Westbrook, Conn., April 8, 1846, only son of Erastus and Elizabeth Jones. His mother died when he was 8 years of age. His parents being in limited circumstances his school privileges were correspondingly meager. After his mother's death he went to live with his grandfather, Captain William Spencer. In 1868, in company with his father and brother-in-law, Ed. Hall, he came west and settled at Egg Harbor. The following spring his father returned to Westbrook where he died in 1871 at the age of 57 years. Jared Jones, as a young man had followed fishing along the coast of New England and when he came to Wisconsin he continued in that industry, fishing out of Jacksonport for a time and later at the "Door." In the early seventies he purchased a nice tract of land in Jacksonport but he continued fishing the greater part of the time. For three eyars he sailed on the lakes. In 1880 he married Miss Harriet Elida Philip, a native of New York state, who survives him. They had no children. In 1902, Mr. Jones moved to this city and with his wife resided here until his death. While a resident of Jacksonport, he served as town supervisor and for a number of years was school clerk of his district. Mr. Jones was the last member of his family. His twin sister, Mrs. C. Bushnell, of Oregon, died in January this year. His other sister, Mrs P. W. Kirtland, of Green Bay, died in May of this year.
