    2. Ocean going passenger ships did not come into Chester or anyplace else on the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound and is not easily accessible to ocean going ships. Long Island runs the entire length of the Connecticut coast line. Ships stay to the south of Long Island and dock in New York and New Jersey. In the later half of the 1800's I would look at ocean ports like Boston or New York. I have lived the near Cromwell and Middletown all my life and have never heard of any place in Connecticut serving as an immigration point in the 1800's It would not have been difficult for people to travel from New York to Connecticut. I don't know just what modes of transportation were available at any given time. It can't rule out the possibility that at some point in time people were able to travel by non-ocean going boats via the Long Island Sound from New York to Hartford and Middletown after they had entered the country. I just don't know if there were any businesses offering that kind of service. 3. My grandparents and their children arrived in Hartford from Statin Island, NY by vessel............that was in the late 1890's. They had first lived in Statin Island for a couple of years, having come from England. susan moore nokomis, fl and tolland, ma At 12:27 AM 4/1/2002 -0500, you wrote: >Ocean going passenger ships did not come into Chester or anyplace else on >the Connecticut River.
