    3. I believe that oceangoing sailing ships did come up the Conn River but that was mainly before the 1800s. And there must have been CT commercial ports on L.I. Sound. It's plenty deep. STOCKING, et al..... | Ocean going passenger ships did not come into Chester or anyplace else on | the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River empties into Long Island | Sound and is not easily accessible to ocean going ships. Long Island runs | the entire length of the Connecticut coast line. Ships stay to the south | of Long Island and dock in New York and New Jersey. In the later half of | the 1800's I would look at ocean ports like Boston or New York. | | I have lived the near Cromwell and Middletown all my life and have never | heard of any place in Connecticut serving as an immigration point in the | 1800's It would not have been difficult for people to travel from New | York to Connecticut. I don't know just what modes of transportation were | available at any given time. It can't rule out the possibility that at | some point in time people were able to travel by non-ocean going boats | via the Long Island Sound from New York to Hartford and Middletown after | they had entered the country. I just don't know if there were any | businesses offering that kind of service. | | Marilyn | CT | | On Sun, 31 Mar 2002 23:40:38 EST [email protected] writes: | > Deb, is there any chance ships came into Cromwell?
