Hi Pat, I checked the 1880 census, which is the only complete one that I have. Found Thomas Wilson, b. Branford, New Haven cnty CT, 1862. There were just him and his mother Eliza Wilson, b Ireland in this household. Says his father was born Scotland. National Archives film # T9-0107, page 527c. Seems odd that his younger brothers were not listed, which makes me think it is the wrong Thomas. However among the neighbors same film # page 539D was listed Annie McGarry b 1862, Branford CT as well. She is shown as the stepdaughter of James Callahan. Looks like her mother married again and there were a few younger Callahan kids. States both her father and mother b Ireland. This is most likely of no help, but thought I would toss it over to you, see if anything makes any sense. I have an Abraham Snow, born in Mansfield or Ashford CT around 1700 and I feel the same about him, being dropped from the sky. Carole CT
Yep, Wilson is usually a Scots surname. But there were plenty of Scotch-Irish in Ireland. My Scotch-Irish ancestor (the only one I've found) was a GGG-GF named Craig, who lived in Limavady, Co. Derry, Ulster.
