St. Patrick's Cemetery was not established until 1901, so prior to that Irish Catholics were either buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Portland or The Old St Andrew's Cemetery in Colchester, which is a mess. There is also a chance that it could be St. John's Cemetery in Middletown, old or new. Burial records can be found in the towns and cemetery records at the Church. There is also a Catholic Church in one of the Haddams, Middle, East etc. and I am taking a guess that it is St. Bridget's but I don't believe that it was established until around 1920's. If you have any death dates you can also try the Middletown Library because an obit would have been in the Penny Press which is on film at the Library. Some of the paper is indexed before 1900 and maybe thru 1940. If you need more help, let me know. Rita

    3. ME TOO!!! I descend twice from Daniel Brainerd. I have quite a bit of material on the Brainerd family. In fact I recently got what I thought was a good deal on CD, the two volume book by Lucy Brainerd. Someone on this board was nice enough to send me some copied pages, pertaining to my line. Have not been able to read much of the book on CD, as been really tied up with work. I don't see any end in sight either, with the holidays on their way as well. Maybe that week betwenn Christmas and New Years?????? Have that week off. I always say am waiting for a big snow storm, when I am stuck home and no one can expect me to run somewhere, that's my time. Not sure if you need anything, but would be most happy to help anyone. Enjoy digging, Carole CT

    1. NEHGS Connecticut Search Seminar
    2. For those of you who don't already belong to New England Historical & Genealogical Society this may be of interest. Anyone attending may wish to report tips for Middlesex County researchers after the event. Thanks in advance! Martha in Illinois Digging for Your Roots in Connecticut Saturday, November 6, 2004 This one-day seminar at the NEHGS Library in Boston will assist those just beginning their research as well as those who have found themselves mired for years. Enjoy lectures by several experts covering the history, migration, records, and repositories of each area. This intensive seminar will address basic genealogical research as well as printed sources relevant to the geographical core of the state, probate records, and the resources of the Connecticut State Library. It will conclude with several interesting case studies. Join us to enhance your Connecticut research skills! Lectures will include: An Overview of Genealogical Research in Connecticut Joyce S. Pendery, certified genealogist, NEHGS trustee, and contributor to the Connecticut research area of NewEnglandAncestors.org. This talk will provide a brief overview of genealogical resources in Connecticut from the 1630s to today with an emphasis on information that can be found in Connecticut town halls, libraries, and historical societies, as well as on the Internet and at major libraries outside the state, including NEHGS. The Connecticut Core In Print - Updated Gary Boyd Roberts, senior research scholar at NEHGS. The "Connecticut Core" is the area bounded roughly by New London, New Haven, Hartford, and Woodstock, within which area sources are superb and a majority of genealogical problems can probably be solved through printed sources. Outside this geographic core are western or "pioneer" Litchfield County ("on its way to Duchess County, New York") and Fairfield County in the south, now largely suburban New York City. Negotiating the Maze of Connecticut Probate Records Barbara Mathews, certified genealogist specializing in colonial Connecticut research, contributor to the Connecticut research area of NewEnglandAncestors.org. This lecture reviews the types of estates and documents found in Connecticut probate records, including testate, intestate, and insolvent estates, as well as documents such as wills, inventories, bonds, guardianships, and distributions. The presentation identifies where probate was recorded at different periods in Connecticut history and closes with examples of how to locate the records on microfilm. Resources of the Connecticut State Library Richard C. Roberts, head of the history and genealogy department of the Connecticut State Library. The Connecticut State Library maintains and provides access to comprehensive collections of materials on the history of Connecticut and its people. Learn more about its services and genealogical resources such as the Barbour Collection of Vital Records, the Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions, and the Church Records Index. Some Connecticut Case Studies: Thinking Out of the Box Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG, FASG, associate editor for the Register, author of Descendants of Peter Mills of Windsor, Connecticut (1998); Congregational Church Records Of Naugatuck,Connecticut (1987); A Mills and Kendall Family History; and compiler of an index to The Connecticut Nutmegger. Compiled genealogies and vital, church, cemetery, newspaper, and probate records are usually consulted first when starting genealogical research. In Connecticut many ancestors have fallen through the cracks of the box of what is typical. This lecture will review several case studies which venture outside the box of expected research tools to explore other options and solutions. It has that Mary Denison was born 14 Jan. 1804 in Saybrook and died 6 Nov. 1842. It says tha Mary was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Lester) Denison who were married 29 Sept. 1793. William was the son of John and Lydia (Pratt) Denison. I consider these to be leads that need to be further researched.

    3. Thanks very much. I've seen "Ancient Families of New Haven" but the one you mention sounds like a good lead. I'll try to locate a copy through a library. Jedediah served in the Revolutionary War. In searching the Census records, it appears that Jedediah had at least six children born between 1785 and 1810. I descend from his daughter Betsey who was born in Killingworth, 4 Feb. 1790/91. I haven't researched the other children of Jedediah and Mary. I have not been able to find the parents of Mary Denison, but according to the "Vital Records of Saybrook Colony 1635-1860" she was from Saybrook.

    3. Can anyone furnish any info on James Coburn and family? He lived in Meriden, CT in the 1740-50's. He married second Irana Powell in Jan. 1750 in Meriden and she died in 1751 in Meriden. He married third Lydia Ellis in Dec. 1756 in Wallingford. James & Lydia had eight children, all born in Wallingford, New Haven, CT between 1757 and 1773. I''m trying to prove that their daughter Jane Coburn, born Feb. 8, 1771 in Wallingford is my gr-gr-gr-grandmother. I have lost track of James and most of his family after 1773 when their last child, Benjamin, was born in Wallingford. I have traced a few of James' children: mainly James H. and Benjamin. I have found a James Coburn in Massachusetts in a 1800 census, but don't know if this is the same one. Any help will be most appreciated. Marion

    1. Zachariah Long and Susanna Borden?
    2. Hi all, A correspondent is wondering if his ancestry connects to Zachariah Long and Susanna Brden of the East Haddam/Lyme area. They lived in Prescott County of Ontario, and in 1880 a son listed his father's birthplace as Connecticut. A son of Zachariah and Susanna was named Borden Long, and a grandson was named Elisha Borden Long. Does anyone know where this couple ended up after their first three children were born in 1745, 1749, and 1751? Thanks.
