    3. Carole, I noticed in your list of surnames, the name MACK. My ancestor, Joel FOX, possibly married a woman with this surname. Her name was Elathene or Alethia or something similar. Wondering if you have any possible matches from your family. They had at least 2 sons, Henry and Gustavus, born in 1806 and 1810 around Saybrook. Among his projects were New York's Prospect Park (1865-1873), Chicago's Riverside subdivision, Buffalo's park system (1868-1876), the Niagara Reservation at Niagara Falls (1887), Boston's "Emerald Necklace" park system, and the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Google his name (spelled Olmsted, not Olmstead) for a wealth of biographical material, as well as photographs of his work. Chris

    1. Re: [CTMID] Roll Call -SAUNDERS pre 1771
    2. Dear Chris: One line of the Saunders married into the Wolcutt family. Elizabeth Saunders, born in 1582 in Somersetshire, married Henry Wolcutt in 1606/7 and immigrated to the the states in 1630. Elizabth was the Daughter of Thomas of Lydiard, St. Lawrence, Somersetshire. He died in 1609. He was the son of John Saunders b. c. 1534. They first settled in Dorchester and then removed to Windsor, Ct. in 1636. I have some more information about the other Saunders; however, my files on them are in the 'shed', my husband's unheated office. I'll try to get out there w/i the next few days and see if I can find anything helpful for you. The name "Simon" was the name of one of Henry and Elizabeth's son, or grandson, which makes me think it could possibly be the same family. You might see if you can find some more information on this family by going into Rootsweb/WorldConnect. Marge near Philadelphia

    2. I am attempting to confirm family memory concerning Hazel Beatrice BROWN who gave her birth as 26 Nov 1896. The parents she knew were William H. BROWN and his wife Cora Cordelia BROWN. When I asked about William and Cora BROWN in connection with an existing photo, my cousin, one of Beatrice's daughters told me that her father, Donald E. INGHAM, had told her that her mother, Beatrice, was adopted by the BROWNs. That her natural mother and father had worked for the BROWNs at CLARKHUST, that her natural father had been killed by a train and that her mother had chosen the BROWNs to adopt Beatrice. The name FLOOD was mentioned as a possible family name for the natural parents. The 1900 census for Haddam has the BROWNs, William, Cora, and Beatrice, living next door to the CLARKs, owners of CLARKHURST, with a servant name Emma FLOOD in the household. This all seems to fit but is still speculative. Where should I turn for firmer documentary evidence? Cora Cordelia (CLARK) BROWN's lineage clearly goes back to Daniel BRAINERD b. 1641. I'd like to trace William BROWN and Emma FLOOD back also. George Garrettson GWGPhila@aol.com

    3. Regarding Roll Call, I have an ancestor from Middletown, named Otis Fisk (died Sept 7, 1855, age 51). I am interested in finding out who his parents were, and his wife's parents.. Otis' wife was Esther Hubbard Fisk. (Esther, b Jan 22, 1806, m. July 26, 1824) Otis was a coal merchant and had his own coal dock on the Connecticut River where the freeway is now. His son Frederick Otis Fisk (b Dec 25, 1828; died __, 27, 1899, age 70 yr 5 mo, 2 days, at Jersey City, N.Y., and was bd. there) moved west to California, during the gold rush, and fathered my Great Grandfather, Frederick Sovino Fisk. Frederick Otis returned to Middletown when his father died after injuries in a train accident. He later moved to Jersey City New Jersey and had at least one other son (Walter H.) by Georgiana Love Fisk (half brother to my ancestor Frederick Sovino Fisk) I would be interested in any additional information about this second family, or descendants of Frederick Otis' siblings (I have all of the siblings names, etc.) It is possible there is a connection to the Fisk Starr House in Middleton, either through Esther and Otis, or through one of their grandchildren. I would be interested in know who I should contact to find historical information about the house and the families who lived there. Also where would be the best place to look at newspapers from the early 1800's to 1890 for Middletown? Are they online anywhere? I visited Middletown years ago,to do research. Thanks, Linda Fisk McNeil Portland, OR > >| >| > >

    3. Hi Warren, Yes she does and her parents were Mary White and Joseph Loomis. I know that Mary is the dau. of Robert White and Bridget. Somehow I tie up with their other dau. Ann, as well. Not sure at the moment, but do have the story of Robert White on file as well as copies of The history of Ancient Windsor vol 1 and 2. Do you know who Nicholas Olmstead's mother was? Have father as James. I tell you I have more of these "woven" families here. To top off my Gates, this is my mother's paternal line and on her maternal side, we have another Gates. I believe she goes back to Stephen of Hingham. I have Spencers coming an going. I will copy your info and put it in my files. I think at one time years back you and I decided we were in deed related. About that Olmstead guy that designed Central Park, I had the newspaper article. Not sure if I kept it, although I do keep most things. Can check on it if you are interested in reading it if you have not done so. Talk soon, Carole CT

    1. Roll Call -SAUNDERS pre 1771
    2. Chris Beck
    3. I am researching my Saunders family history and have come to a dead end with my upteenth great-grandfather, SIMEON SAUNDERS. I have found very little on him. Don't even have a birth or death date. I have found info on two sons and reference to other children, but no names. Below are a couple texts, one stating that say he moved to Wood County, WV from Caroline County, VA around 1796 and that he was "perhaps" originally from Connecticut. I have found two other researchers that have him in their databases because his children married into their direct ancestral line. One of the researchers shows he was from Haddom, Middlesex County, CT, but didn't record a source for that info. This is some of what I have found in WV, but don't know how to look for him in CT: From "Pioneers In Wood County, WV" Vol. 1 Biographical Sketches of Early Settlers in Wood Co. By John A. House, 1939 "SAUNDERS, SIMEON - to Wood County 1796 - perhaps from Connecticut and probably with Dr. Joseph Spencer*. (see below) He is likely the father of Abner Saunders, who died in 1838 (3 Will Book 337) leaving a widow, Mary, and of Captain Nimrod Saunders, who is said to have been from Prince William and Caroline Counties, VA." SAUNDERS, ABNER, lived around 1800 or later on the Kanawha River, near Newark. He was of Welsh descent. His father and older brothers were in the American army in the Revolution. He was born in Caroline County, in 1771 and died in Wood County, in 1838. He was married to Mary, daughter of Anthony Buckner, before his coming to Wood County. SAUNDERS, CAPTAIN NIMROD, was a brother to Abner. His wife was a Creel, and he came with the Creels to the Wicliffe patent on the upper side of the Little Kanawha River. He lived in 1800 on Little Stillwell. He was born in 1774, and is buried in the Cook graveyard in Parkersburg. His wife, Sarah Creel, was a native of Prince William County, Virginia, and was a widow for forty years, and lacked but six months of being 100 years of age when she died in 1883." From "The Memories and Writings of Harold David Somerville", Volume III Compiled by Pauline Somerville Smith and Lola Mae Smith [page 230 to 235] The Saunders Family Nimrod and Abner Saunders, brothers, came to the Kanawha Valley frontier at the dawn of the 19th century. They were of Welch stock on their mother's side. They had lived in Virginia for many years. On the parental side, they claimed descent from the celebrated Indian Chief, Powhatan, whose blood coursed that of the historic Princess Pocahontas. The uncles and elder brothers fought under General Washington in the Revolutionary War. Abner Saunders was born in Caroline County, Virginia, in 1771 and died on April 3, 1838. He married (Polly) Mary, daughter of Colonel Anthony Buckner. She was a sister of Clara Buckner, who married George Creel Jr., in 1798. She was born 1777 and died April 8, 1862. He was buried at Claysville and she at Newark. Abner Saunders resided on a farm opposite Newark, which was named, "Cool Spring." * Info I have received from descendants of Dr. Joseph Spencer, supposedly a friend of my ancestor, Simeon Saunders. "Dr. Joseph Spencer lived for a time in Compton, NH, and was town clerk there in 1772. He later returned to Connecticut and married "as early as 1767." He settled there about the same time in Lebanon in the practice of medicine. He was living there in 1780 but soon after moved to Lansingburgh, NY. A few years later he removed to Vienna, WVa, about six miles from Marietta, OH. He studied medicine, probably with his step-brother, Dr. Daniel Southmayd, or with Cr. Augustus Mather. According to tradition, he served in the Revolution as an aide to his father and as an assistant surgeon, but no record evidence of such service has been found. They removed ca. 1793 to Wood Co, VA. Vienna was founded in 1794 by Dr. Joseph Spencer, who brought his family to the area and settled a 5,000-acre land grant he received for services as a physician in the Revolutionary War. Spencer named his new community Vienna after Vienna, New Jersey, where he had once participated in a battle during the Revolution. The doctor's settlement did not prosper, and for many years it remained farmland." Birth: 22 Jul 1750 in Kinderhook, Columbia Co., NY Death: 11 May 1824 in Vienna, VA Baptism: 22 Jul 1750 East Haddam, CT (Millington) Occupation: Physician Father of Dr. Joseph Spencer: Joseph SPENCER, Major Gen., b. 3 Oct 1714 in East Haddam, CT Mother of Dr. Joseph Spencer: Martha BRAINERD, b. 1 Sep 1716 in East Haddam, CT **************************************************************************** **************** Chris Beck thebecks@ncn.net

    3. I am researching the SANFORD family . . . what I know so far is that Zachariah Sanford married Lois Huntley in 1780 in New London Co., but believe Zachariah was from Saybrook. I am seeking more information regarding Zachariah Sanford and am hoping to find out who his parents were. I have a lead that indicates a Samuel Sanford may have been his father, but I have no proof of that and would love any input on this family. Thank You, Jennifer Blair jablair@insightbb.com
