Regarding the discussion, see: Flagg, Ernest, Genealogical Notes on the Founding of New England, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1973. There is a lot in there with regard to the English origins of this family. Dona Ritchie
Hi DeAnne - You and I have corresponded before - it has been awhile. I keep trying to come up with something new on this couple, but nothing so far. I did buy the Sears Genealogy by Samuel May and he has Sarah married to _____ Hitchcock (and her sister, Betsy married to Samuel Hitchcock). But he gives no sources. I don't really even know for sure - can't prove - that Sarah was the dau of Joshua and Rebecca Mayo Sears (that is what I meant - that's what I get for not reading over my emails). I was even on Cape Cod this last May/June and coulen't come up with anything definitive. So, you haven't found anything new on this couple either? Frustrating. Janet

You're welcome. I lived in CT 1980-85, in Rocky Hill (6 mos) and then in West Hartford. I'm back in my hometown in the Hampton Roads area of VA now. And yes, I'm sure descendants of the _Lion_ passengers left their landmarks. Do you have a listing? Is there a CROW something somewhere in CT? I don't believe I have John CROW's origins. He was a sawmill operator and goodly landowner before the hegira up river to Hadley, Massachusetts ca 1651(?) after the First Church (Hartford) dispute. He's on the Hartford Founders Monument, as is Elder Wm GOODWIN. Hi Janece, Thanks for writing. I have James Olmstead and James as his father. Now John may be related to Nicholas, or even his father James. Who knows where he might cross lines here. So very interesting to read about him. I do have Saybrook, Norwich, Windham, Lebanon E Haddam and Hartford along with Windsor. I will be watching for your records. Your work is much appreciated. I've "rescued" two old photographs of Mrs. Gertrude TAYLOR and her husband (Mr. TAYLOR) which were both taken at the Paul Tralles Studio in Washington DC. I believe the photographs were probably taken in the 1880's with both appearing to be in their 30's or 40's at the time. Thanks to the help of a Washington DC Researcher we believe that these are photographs of Howard Augustus TAYLOR and Gertrude MURRAY TAYLOR of New York City. Gertrude MURRAY b. 6 Jan 1872 at Goshen, NY the daughter of Wisner MURRAY and Gertrude BERNARD. Wisner MURRAY was b. 1844 and d. 1876, he was the son of Ambrose Spencer MURRAY and Frances WISNER. Gertrude and her Mother lived with Ambrose and Frances MURRAY in Goshen, NY after Wisner died. Ambrose & Frances had 6 children including, Ellen MURRAY b. 1837, George W. MURRAY b. 1839, Wisner MURRAY b. 1844, Ambrose S. MURRAY b. 1852, Russell MURRAY b. 1854, and Francis W. MURRAY b. 1855. Gertrude BERNARD was the daughter of Chauncey BERNARD and Gertrude THWING of CT. Howard A. TAYLOR b. 23 Nov 1865 was the son of Henry Augustus TAYLOR of CT and Catherine OSBORN of NY. Howard was a lawyer as was his older brother Henry O. TAYLOR who was married to Julia ISHAM in 1905. The TAYLOR Family lived in Manhattan, NY along with their 6 children including Howard A. who was their youngest child. Howard's siblings included Ella Osborn TAYLOR b. 1848, Frank Mansfield TAYLOR b. 1850, Charles Gustavus TAYLOR b. 1853, Henry Osborn TAYLOR b. 1857, and Mary Rebecca TAYLOR b. 1865. It appears that Gertrude & Howard had three children, Geoffrey b. 1893, Eleanor b. 1894, and Murray b. 1895 and d. 1972 in Cobalt, CT. Copies of the photographs along with all the family information gathered by this researcher are posted on the internet at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bldr/georgetown2.html I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their rightful place with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Janece: I have a John Olmstead who was "of Halstead", born c. 1540. He married Palladia (?) Olmstead c. 1565. Their daughter Anne (Agnes) was born c. 1566 "of Halstead", Essex. Ann married Thomas Edward French III in 1587 in Farham, Essex, and died on 11 Feb. 1624 in Halstead. Thomas died in 1613. Is your John Olmstead of this line or the James Halstead line?. Marge

Hello, They were from England. Thanks, Jane USA
Dorothy/Dolly Graves, widow of William Graves, of Middletown, CT, is my most difficult brick wall. I descend from Dolly and her second husband. I am seeking her maiden name and parentage. I have found no record of marriage for anyone named Dolly or Dorothy to any William Graves in New England. There is only one record of such a marriage anywhere in America during the right time, in the 1760s or 1770s – the marriage of a William Graves and a Dolly Barker – which took place on 20 September 1770 in Swedes’ Church, Philadelphia. The “son of William and Dolly,” a second William Graves, was born on 1 August 1776 in Middletown (Barbour index). On 7 October 1782 Dolly was named administratrix of William Graves’ estate. On 6 July 1783 Dolly married John David Arent (aka Arnd and Arndt, a Hessian soldier who had deserted his regiment) in Christ Church (Episcopal), Middletown. The Middletown Vital Records call her "Dolly Graves," widow of William Graves, and they date the marriage on 1 June 1783, probably the date of their “intention” to marry. The records of Christ Church, Middletown, show that "David Arnd" and "Mrs. Dorothy Graves" were married 6 July 1783. (The church records are now held by Holy Trinity (Episcopal) Church, Middletown, which absorbed Christ Church.) I'd appreciate any research ideas and would jump for joy for anyone's recognition of Dolly or William. Thanks, David Sisson
>I also have two GATES lines, which if not mistaken go back to Capt George GATES and wife Sarah OLMSTEAD. Carol, Have you done any research on John OLMSTEAD or is he in your line? I am typing up the Norwich Town History (part of the New London County History book that Jane is getting/has on her site) and what I found was: Page 263 JOHN OLMSTEAD married Elizabeth MARVIN, and settled at Saybrook, where he was appointed leather-sealer in 1656. He is mentioned incidentally upon the Saybrook records in 1661 as “John OLMSTED, of Mohegan, shoemaker,” which shows that he had removed to the new plantation. At this place, however, he appears as a doctor or chirurgeon, and was undoubtedly the first physician of the settlement, though the articles enumerated in his inventory would imply that he still continued his practice with the last and lap-stone. For several years he was on the grand jury of the county. He possessed a considerable estate, and was very precise respecting the date and bounds of his grants. There were a few of the "Old" Saybrook group that moved with their minister to Norwich, there may be some other clues here if you could see John's probate records. Just a thought.
