> I'll be in Connecticut soon and want to revisit the cemetery in which > some of the earliest of my Higby ancestors are buried. Check out the listings for the Old & New Highland Cemeteries - there are HIGBYs in both (some spelled HIGBE). You didn't give dates, but there's a John HIGBY in the Old Highland Cemetery who died in 1789 at age 84. There are more HIGBYs in the Old South Side Cemetery & the Indian Hill Cemetery. (These are all found under Middletown Cemeteries in the Middlesex Co. section.) Hope this helps you find your ancestors. Jane list mom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/
Coralynn.....since I'll be in CT soon, maybe I can go to the Godfrey and copy the Old Westfield Cemetery internments. There may not be any more than already seen on the Old Westfield page http://www.interment.net/data/us/ct/middlesex/westfield.htm It's a tiny place, very old--1700s, and some stones are extremely hard to read. I tried to find Boardman Lane on mapquest and yahoo....but nothing. So will have to do what I did before and ask around. Maybe the Godfrey will have a more exact location. Since I've never been to the Godfrey, I would like to see it....maybe take my grandson. My son graduated from Wesleyan, but at the time we had no idea we had so many ancestors there or that Higby mountain was named for our first ancestor in that line. Norma Unger
Old Westfield cem in Middletown, aye? OK, out there, who wants to go to the Godfrey Library and photo-copy that cemtery? (Interment doesn't have complete enumerations). You photo copy it and send it to me and I'll transcribe it. (that goes for other cemeteries, too). I was looking for my earlier Higbys and finally found again the cemetery I had visited once before, which is not listed on Jane's site. This is the website for the Old Westfield Cemetery. http://www.interment.net/data/us/ct/middlesex/westfield.htm I had remembered "Boardman," which turns out to be the road it's on. I don't know why it is not on Jane's site. It's quite picturesque, but apparently uncared for and decaying. Norma Unger
Looking again......I had looked at all the cemeteries at least once...I think Jane is right, it has to be the Old Highland cemetery. It was quite difficult to find when I was there the last time .....does anyone have a location for it? It seems to be in need of upkeep, as so many stones are falling down in decay. Norma Unger
Sorry to send this twice; thought I should restate the subject I'll be in Connecticut soon and want to revisit the cemetery in which some of the earliest of my Higby ancestors are buried. I was there once and recall that it is across the freeway from the main area of Middletown (and the college). Then a rickety gate and up a tiny hill, just a few headstones...some Bacons there as well. Now I have not been able to locate that cemetery on Jane's site, which I thought was where I found it before. Edward Higby was the first one there, but I don't know where his grave is. One of his sons, John I believe, and his wife are in the cemetery that I seek. From the cemetery you can look down on someone's house and pool. Does anyone know this cemetery and can you give me the name and location? Thank you....Norma Unger (gg-granddaughter of Jeduthan Higby)

Ebenezer was the son of John SAGE and Hannah STARR. I have all of the documented children of John and Hannah along with their spouses. I do not find any BIGELOW's in there. Those children would be the aunts and uncles of Martha & Hannah SAGE (the minors). Can you provide any insight into who this Jonathan BIGELOW might be and to which SAGE he was married? I am also puzzled by the statement "father-in-law Michael BURNHAM" - should this, perhaps, be brother-in-law? Thank you for any insights you might provide. William Morrison

Hello Barabara, You wrote: <I am seeking the parents and wife of Isham Purple b abt 1781 CT or possibly MA. The Isham genealogy states that a Chapman granddaughter of Thankful Isham married a Mr. Purple- no other info other than her daughter had married a Chapman who had 3 daughters.> I already sent you a couple e-mails privately, noting the location of an Abner Chapman in the same Crowley corner area of Millington Society, East Haddam, as the one Purple family. To leave a trail of bread crumbs to possibly be found by others searching your lines, I thought I'd better return to this mailing list venue. I "googled" your Isham Purple, using Metacrawler.com. I found a family history posted that seems to match your Isham and Phoebe (Rogers) Purple. Have you already contacted this gentleman? His posted story doesn't name Isham's parents, but maybe he knows the answers you are seeking. One excerpt is as follows: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mikent/biographies/local/lyonmorgan.html Biography of Morgan Lyon by James William Lowry (You may contact Mr. Lowry at his email address: jwlowry@fuse.net .) From Chapter 1: <Isham Purple was a distant relative of Dr. Purple. A veteran of the War of 1812 who had served in Howe’s volunteer regiment from Connecticut, Isham Purple was married to Phoebe Rogers. They were somewhat younger contemporaries of Captain and Mercy Lyon, Isham having been born in 1781 and Phoebe in 1787. Isham and Phoebe moved from Connecticut to New York in the early 1820s and settled in the vicinity of Chenango County. They had at least six children: Dorothy, born about 1803, Daniel, born about 1811, Mary, born June 9, 1812, Martha, born about 1817, Louisa, born November 13, 1823, in Norwich, and William, born about 1825. The Purple family were farmers.> Norwich is named as a place of birth for Louisa. Realize that sometimes children would be recorded in whatever city was convenient, and not necessarily in the one where they were born. Just a thought. Anyway, I thought I would post this for what it's worth. I would check with him to see what he had for sources. It might bring you closer to your answers. Good luck in your continued searching. :-)
I am seeking the parents and wife of Isham Purple b abt 1781 CT or possibly MA. The Isham genealogy states that a Chapman granddaughter of Thankful Isham married a Mr. Purple- no other info other than her daughter had married a Chapman who had 3 daughters. Isham Purple is listed in the 1810 and 1820 East Haddam census. In 1830 he is listed with wife and children in Hamilton county NY with a wife Phoebe who may be Phoebe Rogers. He moved around central NY until moving to Kent county MI by 1860. I visited the Records office at East Haddam in 1997 and 2002 but had little success and little help. There is a record that a John Rogers was appointed his guardian in 1799 sugessting he was under 16 then There were several male Purples in East Haddam but one record suggests Isham was married inWaterford 1805 a record so far not validated. Any help on where further to look would be helpful. Barbara Purple LaViers
