Surnames: Baker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xY.2ADI/780.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Bill- I don't live in East Haddam but I am a direct desendant of William Baker. He is my gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. grandfather. I have traced the family back to East Haddam, CT. I've found a few notes that my great grandmother wrote down about her grandfather (who was William Bakers grandson, James Jewett Decateur Baker). His father (Josiah Jewett Baker) is buried at Three Bridges alongside WIlliam and marked as a "patriot's grave". Unfortunately, my great grandmother's notes don't specifically mention WIlliam Baker by name although she does mention that we come from a long list of revolutionaries. He didn't live long enough to see it, but his descendents also fought bravely in the civil war. I'm very interested to learn more about William Baker and his family. You mention knowing someone who has done extensive research on WIlliam Baker and his family. I would love to have her contact information and any other information that you may have. Thanks, Mark Overton mark@saxquest.com

It's more fun than work, so why not? Looking over my records, I'll be darned if I can find out where I got that New York information. Most of my data comes from "Genealogical Record of the Redfield Family in the United States", by John Howard Redfield (1860), and he does not state the location of the marriage. In the bio of Theophilus, there is no indication that he left Connecticut for that marriage, so I would suggest that NY info is in error. How I came by it I don't know, but I'll be digging into my files this weekend to try to find out. I strive for accuracy, but it sure looks like I didn't dodge a bullet on that one. Ray

    2. I saw, on the Find-A-Grave site, a photo of Priscilla Grinnell Redfield's tombstone in Old Southwest Cemetery, Killingworth. It was posted by Ray Downing, who was (still is, I hope) a member of this list. What a wonderful service you researchers are providing, posting photographs and information, transcribing Barbour records and cemetery records. You all deserve a huge round of applause! One question for Ray: you said in your little blurb on that site that Priscilla married Theophilus Redfield on 24 Dec 1706 in Paris, Oneida county, New York, and then settled in Killingworth, Connecticut. Jane's site Killingworth, Middlesex Co., CT, Vital Records from Barbour, 1668-1852 - D-G has them married in Killingworth: Priscilla, m Theiphilus REDFIELD, Dec 24, 1706 Where did you find the Paris, Oneida County, NY, information? I'd like to correct my records, if need be. Thanks! Lynn

    2. Forest, I could not pass up your CLARK connections in your post about the Middletown cemetery. I have been trying to help my cousin trace her mother's family. The farthest back we have gotten is the marriage of Henry Lee CLARK to Ursula BRAINERD on 1 September 1858 in Haddam Neck, Middlesex Co., CT. He was said to be son of George W. CLARK and Cynthia SELDEN and Ursula, the daughter of Ephraditus BRAINERD and Harriet COLE. Have you come across these CLARKs in your research in Middlesex Co.? George Garrettson

    3. Coralynn, this is great. I do have an advantage in that husband is a burial vault installer. He doesn't always remember the names, of the cemeteries, but boy he sure can find some that are hidden away. He will say, this isn't my territory, but I do fill in and I know there is one located up such and such a road. For sure we get there and there is a cemetery. Of course with so much online these days, I don't have to get him to go on Sundays or vacation days, much anymore. He says, I spend 6 days a week in the cemeteries and then she ,(referring to me), wants to go cemetery hopping on my time off. Everyone laughs about that. I still go from time to time as I like to take pictures of ancestor's stones. I would take a couple of my grandaughters along, give them a list of names I was looking for and send them on their way with a tape recorder. They used to love doing this. Thank you for all the helpful things you do. Carole CT

    2. Another small cemetary is Old East Cemetary in the Westfield district, not far from Miner Cemetary. It is very well kept, but several stones are virtually unreadable now, but maybe earlier records will reveal the names. And if anyone knows where Phebe (Stow) Cornwell CLARK (1737-1838....yes, she was reported to be 101 years old) is buried, please let me know. Husband Joseph CLARK is in Washington Street Cemetary, her son Joseph is in Old East Cemetary, and grandson Joel is in Miner Cemetary, but Phebe is missing. Forrest Clark Olympia, WA
