I'm looking for information on a Jane TRYON, born abt. 1845 in CT, who married Joseph SMITH, born 1842 in Ontario. Jane and Joseph SMITH were living in Middletown on the 1870 census. She died a few months later at the age of 26. She's buried in New Farm Hill Cemetery in Middletown. Here are some other TRYONs in the same cemetery: Franklin B., died 3/6/1894, age 76 Jane E., his wife, died 12/10/1904, age 84 Albertie, died 4/1/1888, age 45 Jasper, died 8/18/1856, age 2 Rosalind, died 8/23/1883, age 3 Elizur, died 11/9/1833, age 44 Anna, 10/5/1863, age 68 Wallace, died 1919, age 67 Ruth (Starr), died 1930, age 68 Jasper, died 1922, age 65 Henry James, died 1913, age 13 I think that Jane TRYON SMITH was probably the daughter of Franklin and Jane TRYON from the above list. For those looking for the Griswold family, I missed this paragraph the first time around in the Early Settlers of Old Lyme, Walter J. Noyes, Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol 7, #1, June 1974, p. 3-10. "According to some authorities, Matthew Griswold may have received a grant in 1645 from George Fenwick in the south- western or Black Hall quarter of ancient Lyme. He is said to have built a log house there, the first in Lyme, and left a Negro to occupy it. According to some, that fact accounts for the source of the name Black Hall, though an English origin may be more likely. Those supporting the 1645 date state that owing to the danger from Indians, Griswold did not come to live there with his family at that time, but returned to the Saybrook fort at night. In the capacity of Col. George Fenwick's agent, he settled up his affairs and later made his home at Black Hall. In a family document of 1781, Matthew Griswold is referred to as having lands there in 1655 and "soon after Enclosed the Same"."

Seeking information on a James STERLING born 1770 supposedly in Middlesex Co. to Demas (MORSE) and Daniel STERLING. I have a James STERLING born c. 1770 who appears in Athens Co., OH around 1818 and is definitely on the 1830 and 1840 censuses there, dies c. 1845, and is buried in the STERLING Cemetery, Canaan Twp., Athens Co. Probable sons are Morse STERLING born c. 1804 Westmoreland (Oneida Co.?), NY, James STERLING, born c. 1819, Midson/Manson STERLING, Mervin/Murvin STERLING, and perhaps others in Ohio. Morse and James moved on to Illinois in 1850s. A Mary SWIFT, age 81, born CT, appears in Morse's household in 1860 Macoupin Co., IL census (Morse's wife was Roxanna JOHNSON). Does anyone have information on MORSE and STERLING in CT in this time period? Any particular sources which might be useful? Thanks in advance. Linda Kmiecik, of Illinois
> Could you check those articles, esp. the one on Old Lyme, for the names > PELTON, GRISWOLD, CHAMPION? Mostly in 1700's. Thanks. Susan, I found the following in Early Settlers of Old Lyme, Walter J. Noyes, Connecticut Nutmegger, Vol 7, No 1, June 1974: Henry Champion and Matthew Griswold are listed among the First Settlers of Lyme. "In those days, the families of Henry Champion, Matthew Griswold, Thomas Lee, the Lord brothers, and Abraham Watrous traveled to the meeting house from the Black Hall area. When they met the old Indian Trail called Pequot Path, they would turn westerly over the old bridge which crossed Black Hall River and continued up the Hill between the present homes of Mr. Joseph Door and Mr. Roger Griswold. The continued along the old trail until it joind Meeting House Hill Road to the meething house which was located just west of Meeting House Hill Cemetery. The men not only carried their psalm books to the services but came armed with their guns, shot and powder horns." Sgt. Samuel Griswold & Cpl. Andrew Griswold are listed among the men who marched to the relief of Boston in the Lexington Alarm of 1775. I couldn't find any mention of those names in the article on Middletown. Jane
I have a few short articles from the Connecticut Nutmegger that I copied on the early settlers of Middletown and Old Lyme that I'd be happy to check for information if anyone is interested. Also an article on Gerard Spencer of Haddam and a little about Benjamin Wright of the same town. Jane

Nancy - There are quite a few names under BAILEY, BAILY, BAYLEY, BALEY only one Martin (your "Elusive"): p. 133 Martin E. Bailey and Sarah M. Stevens both of Deep River were married on the 31 day of March 1844 - by me Russell Jennings. There is a paragraph in the preface, which I quote: "The earliest vital records of Saybrook Colony are scattered through the first six volumes of the Saybrook Land Records. Volumes 1, 1A, 2 and 3 follow and contain only vital records. At a town meeting in 1648 the original colony was divided into quarters. This was the basis of the later separation of towns. Through the years the towns separated from the parent town of Saybrook -- Lyme in 1665, Chester in 1836, Westbrook in 1840, Essex in 1852 (the name of the town was Old Saybrook until 1854 when a new town of Old Saybrook was separated from it and the 1852 Old Saybrook changed its name to Essex). Therefore, in 1852 all that remained of the original colony of Saybrook was the village known as Deep River and Winthrop. This was the town of Saybrook until 1947 when it officially became Deep River. For our purposes the vital Records of Deep River are included in this section. It is believed that Deep River got its name from a deep river that had to be forded on the way to Hartford. Today the deep river is a small stream." If you have other Bailey names, I'd be happy to look further. JanetRudd in Illinois
