Hi Middlesex Listers, I'm not sure how the current HADDAM Queries got started, but I'd like to throw my hat into the ring. I'm descended from five of the original HADDAM FOUNDERS - John1 BAILEY, Daniel BRAINERD, Capt Thomas SHAILER, William CLARK, and Gerrard SPENCER. There is plenty of of information about them and many of their descendants at Timothy Tucker's wonderful Haddam Web Site: http://haddam.com/tucker/ However, like everyone else I have a few very elusive ancestors that passed through Haddam, Middlesex, CT. If you can help with any of the following I'd be most grateful: Esther SMITH was born possibly in Haddam, CT about 1768. She married Thomas Bailey in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, JAN 1788. Esther died about 1810 in Granville Center, Bradford Co., PA. Elizabeth GERARD was born about 1666. She was the daughter of Robert GERARD and Elizabeth BECKWITH. Elizabeth married John2 BAILEY about 1687. Elizabeth died after 1719 in Haddam, CT. Robert GERARD was born about 1640. He married Elizabeth BECKWITH in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, about 1665. Elizabeth was born in New London, CT about 1646. She was the daughter of Matthew BECKWITH and Elizabeth Mary LYNDE. Elizabeth died about 1692 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. Martha BAILEY was born about 1680. Martha BAILEY married William SCOVILLE in Farmington, Hartford, CT, 20 JAN 1702. Martha died 2 MAY 1753. Hello! I noticed that you said you live in Haddam. I am a direct descendant of Thomas Carrier. My mother is a Carrier. My first question involves a house, and perhaps you know, since you are in Haddam. There is a particular house that has been in our family since about the early 1700's, Currently my mother's Uncle Paul Carrier lives there. The house is in Middle Haddam, on some river or another. The house was once a stop on the underground railroad. That is as much as I know.. would you happen to know anything more about this house? History? Etc... Secondly, both my grandfather and my great grandfather have the middle name of Brainard. I know this is a common surname in the Haddams. Directly back to Thomas, there is no Brainard. Do you have any insight to this?? OK! Last question...do you have information on one Capt. Edward M. Simpson, who married one Harriet Johnson. Together they had a daughter, Caroline J. Simpson, born ? Caroline married John A. Carrier on January 16, 1878. This is the only date I have for this family. Would you know anything about this? I thank you SSSOOO much for any light you might be able to shed on any aspect of this would be GREATLY appreciated!! Sincerly, Nicole Rosenberger === "It is a good rule in life never to apologize. The right sort of people don't want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them." ~P.G. I live near Haddam, actually between Haddam and Hebron. Please don't think I'm being critical of your spelling. But it's important, for instance if you are searching to put in correct spelling to receive pertinent information. There is a local paper, The Home Town Crier, which has a column, often with stories of historical families. I sent one copy to someone on the HURD family. You could call or write and ask if any of your names have been featured. The address is P.O. Box 328, 16 William F. Palmer Road, Moodus, CT 06469; 860-873-1708. If you know if any of them are buried in local cemeteries, I would be glad to photograph headstones for you. On DODGE, there are may Dodges on Block Island. Don't know if you ever looked there. Good luck in your search. Anne PELTON, ALBEE, McGEORGE, ULLOCK, BECKWITH, SMITH, ALLYN, RANDALL, BRITT, HILL, JACKSON, COOK, ROSE, WAYE
Bill & Laverne I am interested in any Scoville names. I have been researching this family for 20+ years in Haddam, E. Haddam, and many other locations in CT. E-mail me with your interests and maybe I can match something up. Janice

For those of you who don't receive the weekly letter from Rootsweb, here's the latest report on how much traffic they're handling. If you don't already support this great organization, won't you consider making a donation? You can become a contributer for $12 or $24 will get you sponsor status and where else can we get so much for so little? Mailing lists such as this one, GenConnect boards, GenWeb sites, Archives, the Library, and all the other neat things that the organization provides enable us to connect to our ancestors. I know that personally, it's the best $24 I've ever spent on genealogy. (- climbing down from soapbox ;-> ) Jane NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB 163,035,217 EMAIL MESSAGES AND A LOT MORE. In March, RootsWeb supported the following for the Internet genealogical community: o 4,030 independently authored Web sites. o 108,887,834 total Web hits: 28,801,459 were HTML pages. 17,209,828 were cgi-bin database searches and such. 62,815,960 were graphics (GIFs, JPEGs, etc.). o 2,154,058 file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library. o 6,100 independently operated RootsWeb-hosted mailing lists. o 163,035,217 pieces of e-mail shipped to our mailing lists. That's about a 14% increase in traffic just since January. What folks may not realize is just what those numbers mean. It takes a huge amount of bandwidth to transfer all these Web pages and e-mail messages to the Internet, and RootsWeb's monthly Internet costs have grown from about $10,000 to about $12,000 in just the last two months. It also takes about 30 servers (very large computers) to handle all these Web pages and mailing lists, and RootsWeb is having to spend $10,000 or more each month adding new servers and upgrading its older servers to keep up with demand. I'm proud to announce: 1. The commencement of a new USGenWeb site for Norwich, New London Co., CT: Norwich, CT Genealogy http://home.att.net/~SGTAYLOR1/norwich.html Norwich was first settled in 1659 by Saybrook (now in Middlesex Co.) people led by John MASON and Rev. James FITCH. Sections of Norwich became the towns of Preston, Griswold, Borzah, Franklin, Lisbon and Sprague. Norwich people were some of the early settlers and founders of several Windham County towns. Most of its early families can trace their roots back to MA. Soooo Norwich should be of interest to many with CT and MA ancestral lines. 2. The USGenWeb project for Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA has moved. It got too big thanks to the very successful Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth Project (ALPP) - online transcription of Part II, Genealogical Register, of Davis' Ancient Landmarks of Plymouth. RootsWeb has graciously supplied free webspace for the town of Plymouth: Plymouth, MA Genealogy http://www.rootsweb.com/~macplymo/ As Plymouth was the "opening bell" of immigration to New England, this site should be of interest to all with New England roots. Do support the RootsWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/ which makes possible many of the great genealogy mail lists, provides webspace for USGenWeb sites and has many other wonderful genealogy projects. Karen You may already have an answer to your question as to what library to search. If you are going to be in Middletown for one day, you may want to go to the Godfrey Memorial Library which is located on Newfield Street. They do have a website: <A HREF="http://www.godfrey.org/">Godfrey Library</A> You may want to have a look. Also, you can call them to see if they will be able to help you. Otherwise, you may want to go to Hartford at some point to check out the State Archives. Janice Middletown native
I am searching for anything . . . any tid bit . . . about John Karr who m. Dorothy Hale at Portland Church 29 Apr 1744. They remained in Middletown and had a number of children. I have some information on Dorothy from Jacobus' Hale, House and Related Families. They removed to Ashfield, MA by at least 1777. John Karr died in Plainfield, MA in 1803 at 94 years of age. I would be most appreciative of any item. I will be in CT in June for one day to research John Karr and Dorothy Hale. Would it be best to go to Middletown or is there an archives or library elsewhere that would be a better place to go to do research? Thank you!
