Dear List I am looking for vital records that would prove the Parents of David Smith b. 5 Oct 1733 (in Haddam, CT, I believe). I list him as the son of David Smith and Dorothy Brainard. However, on page 1836 of a book labeled "Connecticut" at the top of the page (source unknown) the following is "She [Concurrence Smith, my ancestor] was a daughter of David Smith, sixth son of Stephen Smith, who came from New Haven and settled on Candlewood Hill, Middletown and owned a large section in that part of town." Who is David Smith's father, David or Stephen, and who is Stephen Smith? John Schulke in Orlando [Researching Bonfoey and Farmer]

Robert Squires, thank you for your generous offer. Because of it I am encouraged to help out, too. I don't have any CT resources but am traveling there in June and will do (if at all possible) single lookups for the Middletown and Hartford area for the first dozen or so folks who email me personally. I may go to the CT archives where archives for the whole state and then some is available. Karen Grubaugh KLeeGruba@AOL.com Wesley Chapel FL
Tim, I'm afraid that the Hamden book doesn't list anyone with the surname CRAIG nor does it mention The Safety Car Htg. & Ltg. Co. It really is a history of Hamden that just happens to provide some details for a small number of families. If I were looking for Mr. Craig, I would call the Hamden Public Library (there must be one), and ask to speak with a reference librarian. Then I would ask the reference librarian the best source of information about Hamden residents of that time and how you might get the information. I did this with a library in Guilford, CT and the librarian took me back through several geneations of the familiy I was researching and also told me the names of sources to find and read. As for The Safety Car Htg. & Ltg. Co., I would call the reference desk at the New Haven Public Library and do the same sort of exploration by phone. Some librarians immediately say that they don't have th time or that the library has a policy against doing genealogical lookups. The Guilford Free Public Library was certainly please to receive the donation I sent them, though. Good luck to you. Tim Millar wrote: > Robert, > > Very kind to offer to do some lookups. I received a response to my offer to do lookup requests that seems to confirm that genealogy is alive and well on the Connecticut lists! At present, I have received 23 requests some of which include multiple surnames. I will get back to each of you in the order in which your email was received with whatever I can find as soon as possible.. Best regards, Robert Squires
Robert Squires: Hi. My name is Dave Wilson. I do volunteer lookup in Ashford, Windham County. I also do professional research in Windham and part of Tolland and New London Counties. I may be in contact with you concerning my own lines. My mom's maternal ancestry is from New Haven, Middlesex and Fairfield Counties and and she has a few logjams. If I can help you with information, let me know. I may even be able to send a few paying clients to you, if you are interested. Once in a while I have somebody contact me about a little work in your neighborhood, and I refuse, because of the time and travel. In fact, right now, I have a client who is looking for information from Wallingford. He just put me on hold in his Windham County work because of money, but assures me that this is temporary. Best of Luck, Dave David P. Wilson Researcher of Eastern CT Families

Could you please do a look up on a KELLEY/KELLY family that was from East and/or Middle Haddam in early 1800's? They had at least 3 children, Walter b. about 1801, Esther b. about 1804, and Mathilda b. about 1810. I only know the names of the children and the fact that the girls were married in OHIO in 1826 and 1827. Mathilda married Samuel G. PELTON, from Saybrook/Lyme, in Ohio. I'm sorry this info is so sketchy but it is about all I have. I hope you can help. Thanks for everything. Susan K. Spies

Robert, Very kind to offer to do some lookups. I have a James MacAllister Craig who, when he applied for a Social Security number in 1936, was living at 80 First Street, Hamden, and working for The Safety Car Htg. & Ltg. Co. (Heating and Lighting?) at PO Box 904, New Haven. Does your information on Hamden have any more on this company, or could you suggest a different source for New Haven at that time. I realize that the towns are adjacent, and perhaps your book wouldn't cover any of New Haven at all. Thanks very much for any information or suggestions. There is a local paper, The Home Town Crier, which has a column, often with stories of local families. I sent one copy to someone on the HURD family. You could call or write and ask if any of your names have been featured. The address is P.O. Box 328, 16 William F. Palmer Road, Moodus, CT 06469; 860-873-1708. Haddam and Middle Haddam are beautiful towns. If you have never visited there, you should think about it. Many local attractions, too. Indeed, Brainard is a pretty common and well known name in CT. THere is Brainard Road in Hartford and Brainard Field in East Hartford. I don't know anything on your family names in particular. Where are you located? If you know if any of your ancestors are buried in local cemeteries, I would be glad to photograph headstones for you. Likewise, if you know where the house is, I can photograph it for you. Anne
