I am looking for anyone who has knowledge of Quinns in Higganum CT late 2800's. I am related to 2 branches of unrelated Quinns in this town. Patrick Quinn married Anna Graham, and her sister, Mary Graham, married Thomas Quinn, who was unrelated to Patrick. Mary work as a domestic for the town jailor. Anna and her family eventually moved Manhattan. Mary's stayed in Higganum. Anyone who can tell me what cemetery they might be buried in, what church they might have gone to, why so many Irish were in Higganum at that time - I assume it was RR work, anything would be appreciated. I also transcribe 19th century bank account records for a web site . I have entered a few people who had been working in CT shortly before moving to Manhattan, and some for people born in CT, and some for people who were living in CT, but banking in NYC. These are the famed Emigrant Savings Bank records. Mostly Irish, but many others represented, including a lot of folks who were not immigrants. Try it. I have over 3000 names and records. This is not an index, but the actual application forms to open an account. The URL is in my signature. Ok, it's been too quiet on this list.. let's get things moving with a Roll Call of the families being researched in Middlesex County. The roll call will start this evening and continue until 6 pm next Sunday. A few simple 'rules': 1) Please put the names you're researching in the subject line. 2) Please give a little more data than just the surname - town, approximate dates, given names - anything that can help your cousins to link up with you. 3) Capitalizing the surnames is a nice touch (makes them easy to pick out), but not required. 4) Feel free to post as many families as you want - you may get more response if you post one family or family grouping to a message. 5) Have fun and good luck!.. Nancy: Thanks Nancy. I'm fishing really. The COVEY family split and went from MA to RI and CT and MD. I don't know who went to CT. Let me give this some thought and get back to you from your web page. Incidentally, your web page looks good. Abner COOPER b 1763 in Middletown, CT served in the CT Line during the Revolutionary War. He later moved westward through the NYS Catskills, onto Sheshequin, Bradford Cty, PA (where he met and married my gggg grandmother Mary Ovenshire), then settled for a time -- 1800-1819 -- in Newtown (today Elmira), NY... before moving to Bentley Creek, Bradford Cty, PA where he died in 1837. I'm searching for information regarding his parents, siblings, and whether he was related to any of the many Coopers that had settled in Pawlings, Washington Cty, NY -- a few miles west of Middletown -- in the late 1700s. Hi Martha That was very enjoyable. Thank you for sharing. Tracy
Hi Sandra! Here is what is written in the Barnes book: Mary was convicted of witchcraft and executed. The records at a Particular Court of Connecticut held 6 Jan. 1662/63 indicted Mary Barns of Farmington, CT for witchcraft. A jury found her guilty and she was executed. She was one of the last people to be executed as a witch in Connecticut. Thomas had to pay the costs of keeping his wife in jail prior to her witchcraft trial..."and at the quarter court held in Hartford March 5th 1662/63 following allowance was made to Daniel Garret, the jail keeper, for keeping goodwife Barns three weeks, twenty-one schillings, besides her fees, which goodman Barns is to see discharged." The records of the Farmington Church show that Thomas Barnes was the twentieth member to join the congregation...Perhaps the darkest side of colonial church life was the universal belief in witchcraft...The universal belief in witchcraft was destined to lay its cruel hand heavily on the life of Thomas Barnes of Farmington. In 1662 his wife, Mary, was indicted for witchcraft. She was "convicted of entertaining familiarity withSatan" and put to death. Not only did Thomas Barnes lose his wife, but he had to pay Daniel Garrett, jailkeeper at Hartford, twenty one shillings besides fees which, the old record says, "goodman Barnes is to see discharged." Without doubt Thomas Barnes was crushed by his unexpected tragedy that entered his life in 1662, but in his grief he could not ignore the fact that a wife was essential on any colonial farm...during the same year in which the first Mary Barnes was hanged, he entered into an agreement with John Andrus of Farmington to marry his daughter, Mary...two children were born, the sencond of whom, Ebenezer, born about 1675, was later to become the first permanent settler of Bristol." (from "Ten Generations of the Barnes Family in Bristol, Connecticut", by Fuller F. Barnes, 1946. ) Hope you enjoy this info.
