    2. This was posted in Somebody's Links by Julie Case, today and since there are a couple of local Connecticut references I thought it might be of use to someone. o Among my grandmother's many family photos are several of people not related to our family, probably family friends. These were in albums originally belonging to my great-great- grandmother, Emily PRATT ERWIN, who lived in Connecticut and in Minnesota. Emily died in 1908, so these pictures would have been taken in years preceding that. -- Mrs. Lavonia PIPER and children of Medford, Minnesota -- Wildey P. HOADLEY, Deep River, Connecticut -- William and Eliza STRONG and daughters of Colchester, Connecticut -- Alin POST and Eva POST of Carbondale, Illinois I will mail these to someone who can prove relationship. 3. Sharon, I have made notes on my ancestors in Portland City Directories from 1898-99. They may go back earlier, but that's the earliest my relatives appear so I have not made any earlier references. The Portland City Directories are grouped together with the Middletown Directories at least on the Microfilms that I've looked at in the Library of Congress. The Portland Directories immediately follow the Middletown. Sharon Heyob [email protected] sharon sterle wrote: > Are there city directories for Portland? 2. While looking for more of our "wanderers" I came across a partial listing of Colchester marriages from the Bailey books at. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctccolch/ As far as I can tell from the format, the town is the place from which the non- Colchester member of the marriage came. There are a lot of East Haddam marriages listed plus a few from Chatham & Middletown. In that they are already arranged and easy to find, I didn't re-transcribe them. Jane

    3. Hello, Nancy...Thank you for your kind offer to help me find my family. My gggrandfather's Swedish name was Carl Johan Samuelsson. I think at some point after his arrival, but I don't know exactly when, he changed from Samuelsson to either Samson or Sampson. Carl Johan was a blacksmith in Sweden. He, his second wife, and their six children left Sweden in May, 1872. His wife was Maja. Their eldest child was my ggrandfather, Carl August (later changed to Albert). On 1875 N.Y. census he was listed as Albert Samson, residing in Dayton, N.Y. He was born in 1855. Second child was Emilie Christina born 1857 son Johan Alfred (maybe simply Alfred in U.S.A.) born 1863. daughter Ida Amanda born 1866. daughter Anna Mathilda born 1869 son Axel born 1871 I think it's likely they had a son, Frank, born about 1876 in the U.S.A., and son, Evert, born in 1879. I think son, Carl August (Albert) separated ways from his family after their arrival. He would have been 17 yr. old at the time of his arrival to the U.S.A. I'd truly appreciate anything you could do to help me find anyone of these family members in your area. Thank you for your kind offer. 2. Marilyn, This is very interesting to me as my INGHAMS' are from OLD SAYBROOK, starting out there in the mid-1600's. But I have NOT had the oppertunity to "Walk the WAlk" so to speak, but plan to by summers end. Have a cousin there and in Danbury and plan to visit with them,am very much looking forward to doing so. I have only been at genealogy for about 10 month activly, but have gain much from the messages from this site, and greatly appreciate it publication. Knowing in my heart and mind that it just as important to know where one come, as to where he or she may be going . Thankyou to you, Jane and all contributors to the list. Have a great day. I appreciate the time and trouble you and others took to set me straight on Connecticut geography. I'm going to include Saybrook residents when I gather in records of Middlesex Co. residents from other areas on the theory that with the borders changing several times, it's better to include them than not. 1. [CTMID] Town of Saybrook
    2. The town of Saybrook found in the 1600's has changed over the years. Originally the boundaries of Saybrook extended east of the Connecticut River. In 1667 the part of Saybrook east of the Connecticut River was incorporated as the town of Lyme. In 1832 the northern part of the original Saybrook was incorporated as the town of Chester. In 1840, the section of Saybrook southwest of Chester along Long Island Sound was incorporated as the town of Westbrook. In 1852 the lower part of what remained of the original town of Saybrook west of the Connecticut River was incorporated as the town of Old Saybrook. The name of the northern section remained Saybrook. In 1854 the town of Old Saybrook split. The southern portion retained the name Old Saybrook. The is the town of Old Saybrook today, although local people frequently refer to it as "Saybrook". In 1854 the northern part changed its name to "Essex, the name still used today. In 1947, the part of the original 1600 Saybrook that retained the name Saybrook, changed its name from "Saybrook' to "Deep River". On today's map you will find these towns on the western side of the Connecticut, reading from north to south, Chester, Deep River, Essex, Old Saybrook. Westbrook is west of Old Saybrook on Long Island Sound. All are in Middlesex County. This is also a good example of how many towns in Connecticut were formed from larger towns over the period of a few hundred years. My source for this information was the chart "Connecticut Towns and Their Establishment " found on the Connecticut State Library website at http://www.cslib.org/cttowns.htm Old members of this list may know about this chart, but many new members may not. I keep copy I printed off the state library site beside my computer. In know this gets confusing. However, knowing the geographical history of the place where your ancestors lived is also important. Many families changed towns of residence without changing houses. Fruitful Hunting, Marilyn CT On Mon, 14 Jan 2002 11:50:35 EST [email protected] writes: > WOW! 3. Jane, Saybrook was originally in New London County. Middlesex County was formed in 1785 from Hartford, New Haven and New London. I believe that prior to 1785 Saybrook consisted of Chester, Essex, Deep River, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. When Middlesex was formed, Lyme and Old Lyme remained in New London County and the remaining part of Saybrook Colony became part of the new county, Middlesex. Towns formed from Saybrook Colony: Chester in 1835. Deep River 1635, originally named Saybrook, name changed to Deep River in 1947. Essex 1852. (called Old Saybrook 1852-1854) Old Saybrook 1852 (from Essex/Old Saybrook) Westbrook 1840. I hope that this helps. 3. Saybrook was originally in New London County and when Middlesex county was created it became part of Middlesex County. Old Saybrook is a relatively new town. Most records are under Saybrook. Saybrook included the current towns of Chester, Deep River, Essex, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. My Middlesex County page on UsGenWeb identifies when each town was crested and when Middlesex county was created. The link to that page is included below in my signature. 2. > Um.....so describe the difference between Saybrook and Old > Saybrook....inquiring minds would like to know....... I found this on the Old Saybrook page at http://nw3.nai.net/~sanner/ First established in 1635, Saybrook Colony encompassed all or parts of the modern day communities of Lyme, Old Lyme, Chester, Deep River, Essex, Westbrook, and Old Saybrook. The town of Old Saybrook as we know it today was incorporated in 1854. Guess I'm going to have to locate a history of the town to see when part of the area went into New London Co. Jane
