Moodus was part of East Haddam - you can find more on the East Haddam Genealogy site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ehgen/research.htm#history The Barbour records for East Haddam only go up to the mid 1800s, but they're available on my webpage [URL below] Jane Devlin Lake Orion, MI [email protected] CTMIDDLE list mom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/

Crofoot My g-g-grandfather, Russell D. Crofoot was born "near Middletown, CT" Sept. 15, 1815 and lived there until he was 6, in 1821. Then his family moved to Turin (or W. Turin), Lewis county, NY. I have not been able to find out who Russell's parents were or if he had any siblings. I tried looking at the Middletown census for 1820 and Turin in 1830 to see if I could find someone who was in Middletown in 1820 and Turin in 1830, but came up empty handed. 2. In the book, Bogue genealogy, Descendants of John Bogue of East Haddam, Conn and Wife Rebecca Walkley by Flora Bogue Deming, c.1944, Page 1: John Booge (Bogue) married 11 Aug 1692 Rebecca Walkley. Richard (referring to Walkley) came to Saybrook about 1644. Their residence was East Haddam, Conn. John Bogue served several terms in the Legislature. Rebecca Walkley taught the first school in East Haddam. Page 2: "Rebecca Walkley, dau. of Richard and Rebecca Walkley, was born in East Haddam, Conn., Aug 12, 1672, and died in East Haddam, Mar. 25, 1733 from Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1657, though Richard was born in Gloucester, Eng. He bought of Samuel Butler of Weathersfield, his home lot and home in Haddam which is on the southeastern slope of what is now Walkley Hill and is still in possession of his descendants. Richard and Rebecca had three children: Richard, Rebecca, and another son who probably died young. The above was copied from the Walkley Genealogy and sent to virgit t. Bogue by Mrs. Grace Walkley Williamson of Forestville, Conn. In the Boston Public Library is a volume, Tragedy of Othello, written by William Shakespeare, London, printed for Thomas Walkley to be sold at his shop at the Eagle and Child in Brittans Bursse, 1662." There are several other paragraphs in the Introduction about Richard and Rebecca stating "date and last name not known". Mrs. Deming also sites as sources the Walkley Genealogy and Colonial Records and Newberry Library in Chicago, Book on American Ancestry. "He first appears in the Colonial Records of Hartford, Conn., May 21, 1657." Regards, Janece Carter Streig

    3. I've been researching my Swedish line of ancestors. The surname is Samuelson. According to the Swenson Research Center, which has Swedish archival documents, there was a Samuelson family that resided in Bridgeport. Margareta Samuelsson died in June, 1894. Her husband, Carl, passed away Sept. 14, 1906. They resided at 115 Dwight Street. Does that address exist today? Are there Samuelsons in that part of Ct? Their children were: Johan Alfred, b. 1863 Ida Amanda. b. 1866 Maria b. 1883 Anna Matilda born 1869 Axel born 1871 Anders born 1872 Frans Oskar born 1875 Wilhelm Conrad born 1879 Victor Hjalmer born 1880 I'm hoping to connect with descendants of these family members. Thank you Sharon in Mn.

    3. Yep. Names with -thorp(e)[one syllable, both spellings], -thwait(e)[ditto],and -by are all from the Danish invaders of the late 800s, who settled in the north. Many of those names DID and DO have a syllable or two before -thorp(e) and -thwait(e). E.g., Althorp, Goldthwaite.
