Ocean going passenger ships did not come into Chester or anyplace else on the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River empties into Long Island Sound and is not easily accessible to ocean going ships. Long Island runs the entire length of the Connecticut coast line. Ships stay to the south of Long Island and dock in New York and New Jersey. In the later half of the 1800's I would look at ocean ports like Boston or New York. I have lived the near Cromwell and Middletown all my life and have never heard of any place in Connecticut serving as an immigration point in the 1800's It would not have been difficult for people to travel from New York to Connecticut. I don't know just what modes of transportation were available at any given time. It can't rule out the possibility that at some point in time people were able to travel by non-ocean going boats via the Long Island Sound from New York to Hartford and Middletown after they had entered the country. I just don't know if there were any businesses offering that kind of service. I believe that oceangoing sailing ships did come up the Conn River but that was mainly before the 1800s. And there must have been CT commercial ports on L.I. Sound. It's plenty deep. Deb, is there any chance ships came into Cromwell? I'm trying to find the point of immigration in 1869 for my ggr, Charles Robin or Robbins who lived in Chester. It would be great if you'd check this out for me. Thank you so much.
The last half of the S surnames from the Barbour Records for Middletown are now on line - once again, thanks to Coralynn Brown! Jane list mom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/
Hi All, I'm doing this again since I see the list is active right now. If you have ancestors that may be in Colonial CT, they can be found at the Colonial Connecticut Records Site: http://www.colonialct.uconn.edu/ P.S. For some, it is hard to get into the site. I try to go into it with a lower browzer with the ads off rather than on. Ellen Baker Washington State

I just typed Cromwell Historical Society, Ct. into google and several sites came up. You can try typing it into Yahoo yellow pages. Mapquest can tell you where it's located. I've never been there in reality, just on the phone. I don't live near it....it would be a long distance call for me too... I just finished uploading the first half of the S surnames, SABIN to SMITH, from the Middletown Barbour Records to the site. I discovered some missing dates among my SMITH ancestors - hope everyone is as lucky! Thanks go once again to Coralynn for all her hard work. Hi listers ~ I've found a listing for my RISKs in directories from the early 1880s for "Front, Farm Hill" Does anyone know what district that would be in the 1880 census? TIA, Dianne
> Jane, are Westford, Concord and Chelmsford in Middlesex, Ct. now? I still > haven't gotten those areas of Connecticut and Massachusetts straight, once > Massachusetts gave up parts of its state. The towns I have listed as being in Middlesex County are: Chatham [see East Hampton, the name changed in 1915] Chester [from Saybrook, 1836] Clinton [from Killingworth, 1838] Cromwell [from Middletown, 1851] Durham [1708] Deep River 1635 [was Saybrook until 1947] East Haddam [from Haddam, 1734] East Hampton [from Middletown, 1767] Essex [from Saybrook, 1852] Durham Haddam [1668] Killingworth [1667] Middlefield [from Middletown, 1866] Middletown [1651] Old Saybrook [1854, the modern Essex] Portland [from Chatham, 1841] Westbrook [from Saybrook, 1840] The dates are from the CT State Library site at http://www.cslib.org/cttowns.htm The towns that switched from MA to CT or vice versus were along the borderline between the two states, while Middlesex County stretches from the middle of the state south. Jane, are Westford, Concord and Chelmsford in Middlesex, Ct. now? I still haven't gotten those areas of Connecticut and Massachusetts straight, once Massachusetts gave up parts of its state. I have Fletchers and Hildreths that served in the war in 1776. Hosea Hildreth had four children and his wife, Experience Keep, was expecting their fifth, when he went to war. He served as a Corporal for six or seven days before he was mortally wounded. He died shortly thereafter at their home, 10 days after Experience gave birth to their fifth child. I used him for my Revolutionary War ancestor when I joined the DAR. I think Jonathan Fletcher, who married Lucy Taylor, was a Captain. However, there were several Jonathan Fletchers in that war, and I'm not sure which Jonathan served as a captain. I do appreciate the additions you frequently make to your site. It's most useful and helpful. Marge
Hi, Marge -- Your FLETCHERs were from Chelmsford MA in the 1600s? I have a 7th G-GM Hope FLETCHER m the Rev. Samuel STOW of Middletown. Her father the Rev. Wm FLETCHER was in Saco, ME. We discussed this a while back. I think Hope's nephew moved to Middx County. I just uploaded a list of Middlesex Co. men who served in the Revolutionary War, 1777-1779, and set aside part of their pay for purchasing supplies for their families. There's also a file that I uploaded a while ago that lists the Middlesex Co. men who served in 1776. Hope these help those of you researching families during this time period.
