    1. [CTMID] Fanny Lucas Walker
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lucas, Walker Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/xY.2ADI/410 Message Board Post: I posted a query some time back [on the Lucas board] about Fanny Lucas, my GGgrandmother, who married John P. Walker. Some facts about her have come to light. She was born, not in Medina, Ohio, but in CT, according to the 1860 census, which has her as head of family, running a boarding house in Vernon Springs, Howard County, Iowa. John P. was a rolling stone who was off to Pike's Peak in search of gold at that time, eventually going all the way to California, then coming back in 1862 to fetch his family and bring them across the plains in a wagon train which he led to California. The family also lived in Waterloo, Wisconsin, where three of their four children were born (the youngest was born in Ohio, probably in Medina). It is possible, despite the census, that Fanny was born, or at least grew up, in Thetford, VT, as a branch of the family moved there from Middletown, CT, around 1790, and this is only a short distance from Vershire, VT, where John P. Walker was born and rais! ed. Fanny and John were both born in 1812 (census records). If anyone has any information to fill out this story, it would be much appreciated. I can furnish a list of all her descendants.

North Plains is in the Hadlyme area of Lyme, Connecticut which is in New London County. John's son, David, lived on Three Bridges Road. David was my great -great grandfather. My cousin lived in the North Plains area when I was a kid and I spent many happy summer days there. I hope we both have some luck with this. If you are still looking for info on these people, email me direct. I will check my library for info. Regards, Elaine

    2. The 1783 Revolutionary War Returns for Middlesex Co. have just gone on line. I've extracted the Middlesex Co. men from LISTS & RETURNS OF CONNECTICUT MEN IN THE REVOLUTION, 1775 - 1783, Connecticut Historical Society, Hartford, 1909, and there are now four files on line, 1775, 1777-1779, 1781, & 1783. If anyone was lucky enough to have an ancestor who served on the FRIGATE TRUMBULL in 1783, there's a chance that you may find a physical description of him as the records give age, height, and coloring for the majority of the sailors. Good luck. Jane list mom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/

    1. [CTMID] Jones, Jared A. (1846-1919) Obituary
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: JONES, PHILIP, PHILLIPS, SPENCER, KIRTLAND, BUSHNELL, HALL Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xY.2ADI/409 Message Board Post: Obituary, Door County Advocate, Sturgeon Bay, Wis., October 31, 1919 DEATH OF JARED A. JONES Had Been a Fisherman of Door County for Nearly 40 Years Jared A. Jones, for nearly forty years a fisherman in the waters surrounding this county, died at his home in the city Sunday morning, death being due to cancer, from which he suffered for may years. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, Rev. E. J. Symons officiating. The Odd Fellows had charge of the burial. Deceased was born at Westbrook, Conn., April 8, 1846, only son of Erastus and Elizabeth Jones. His mother died when he was 8 years of age. His parents being in limited circumstances his school privileges were correspondingly meager. After his mother's death he went to live with his grandfather, Captain William Spencer. In 1868, in company with his father and brother-in-law, Ed. Hall, he came west and settled at Egg Harbor. The following spring his father returned to Westbrook where he died in 1871 at the age of 57 years. Jared Jones, as a young man had followed fishing along the coast of New England and when he came to Wisconsin he continued in that industry, fishing out of Jacksonport for a time and later at the "Door." In the early seventies he purchased a nice tract of land in Jacksonport but he continued fishing the greater part of the time. For three eyars he sailed on the lakes. In 1880 he married Miss Harriet Elida Philip, a native of New York state, who survives him. They had no children. In 1902, Mr. Jones moved to this city and with his wife resided here until his death. While a resident of Jacksonport, he served as town supervisor and for a number of years was school clerk of his district. Mr. Jones was the last member of his family. His twin sister, Mrs. C. Bushnell, of Oregon, died in January this year. His other sister, Mrs P. W. Kirtland, of Green Bay, died in May of this year.

    1. [CTMID] John/1 STOW in Middletown?
    2. Warren Wetmore
    3. Is there any record of John/1 STOW of Roxbury, father of Thomas/2 and the Rev. Samuel/3, living in Middletown? Another son who died unmarried in 1663, John/2, may also have moved to Middletown, causing this confusion. John/2 STOW was a school teacher. Note that I number generations from the oldest in an immigrant family; John/1's father and grandfather both were named John, but never left Kent. TIA, Warren | English Origins of American Colonists, p. English Origins of AMERICAN | COLONISTS | [p.1] CLUES FROM ENGLISH ARCHIVES CONTRIBUTORY TO AMERICAN GENEALOGY. | [p.101] CLUES FROM ENGLISH ARCHIVES CONTRIBUTORY TO AMERICAN GENEALOGY. BY J. | HENRY LEA AND J. R. HUTCHINSON. | page 102 | Rachel Bigg made her will 17 November, 1646 and it was attested by Richard | Peacocke, one of the witnesses, 30 June, 1647, her "sonne in law" John Stowe | being Executor, so that Savage is in error in stating that John died in 1643. | It would appear that he sold his land in Roxbury in 1648 and removed to | Concord probably late in the year, as he made an Inventory of the estate of | John Levins of Roxbury 30 August, 1648. He probably later removed to | Middleton, Conn., and died there. His son Thomas went to Middleton in 1659 | and Samuel removed there in 1652. HENRY W. BELKNAP."

    3. There is a section on shipbuilding..in Cromqwell...talks about a thriving trade with the West Indies. There was frequent exchange betweeen markets in NYC and Boston...in hthe 1700s.One of the wealthiset merchants was John Stocking. Some Cromwell people were privateers and were captured anmd sent to England on prison ships...then skipping ahead, there was the Ct. Steamboat Company that went from Hartford to Saybrook, started in 1818...then in 1823 it operated to NJ...no mention of immigrants coming in..but I'll skim some more later....My ancestors from the 1600s and 1700 came into Boston..but I do have one Swedish greatgrandfather who came to NYC in 1880...and he made his way up very quickly to Meriden, Ct. Trains were active ...it was very easy..I found old Port Chester, NY Journals from 1880...and it is filled with train schedules on the NY, New Haven and Hartford line. Most of the news is Ct. news...just like today (I grew up inPC) I had no idea that the trainswere so big back then...silly me....the paper looked as modern as my NY papers today, with all the train schedules. I guess I romantized 1880...they had plent of steam trains back then and people moved freely.
