    3. Hi Gene, Your story reminds me of an Italian friend of ours. Everyone knows him as Iano (pronounced Yanno), but his given name is really Sebastiano. It's a lot like the Anna/Sebastiana switch. This goes for many ethnic groups. I almost missed my British grandmother on the Ellis Island site, because she is on the ship's manifest as Nellie, but her name is Ellen! Betsey and Eliza can often be nicknames for Elizabeth, as well. I had been there about 6 months ago looking for Guisseppe RANNO. I had found a couple of them back then and one that looked correct for his age but his wife's name didn't match up. My wife and her 1st cousin and the headstone all told me her name was ANNA. While in Middletown this past Easter I went to the Godfrey Genealogy Library and did some research. I couldn't get to the microfilm census as they were both in use. I did find the city directories though and started copying them. Later in the day when a microfilm reader opened up I dug out the 1920 census. Lo and behold the members of the household replied to the census taker that her name was Sebastiana. Her husband and children's names and ages all matched up to my records. I really didn't think my wife and her cousin would accept that they didn't really know their grandmother's correct name. She died when the were about 8 and they called her "! Nunee". This did not surprise me as I have run into that situation before in my family tree. Now after reading your posts that I should go Ellis island, I did. I actually had the correct person 6 months ago. I saved the records and manifests in my Ellis Island personal file and it has given me enough to do for a long time. 2. Warren Wetmore
    3. In the Jas. Carnahan Wetmore 1861 genealogy, she is given as "KATHERINE LEET, wid. of Mr. Robards." "Mrs. Catharine Leet, third wife of Thomas Whitmore, died Oct. 13, 1693; her will was made Aug. 14, 1688, by which she bequeathed her property to her first children, William, Samuel and John Robards, and her last children, Benjamin, Abigail and Hannah Whitmore." I don't see why, if there had been an intervening LEET(E) marriage, she was called the "widow of Mr. Robards." In the Middlesex Vital Records that Jane posted 8/24/99: "Wettmore, Thomas Senior married Leeke, Katterne 8 Oct 1673 [this name has sometimes been read as Leete]" This suggests that LEET(E)/LEEKE was her most recent married name. But could LEEKE/LEET(E) have been her maiden name? Hmmm. Note also the ROBARDS spelling, which is sometimes given as ROBARTS. Benjamin/3 WETMORE (Thomas/1, Samuel/2) m. 1719 Marcy ROBERTS, d/o Samuel and Mary. Perhaps it's the same ROBERTS family. Conceivably it might have been of some use to you: how was I to know? And it may make a connection for someone else. Anyway, to the point: no, I don't know who her parents were. I believe her to have been born in Middletown, CT, based on a family tree my grandmother made about 50 years ago, which was based on family sources that aren't around any more, but there were a lot of Lucases in Middletown around that time (1812), according to the federal census. Fanny is how she appears in the 1860 census and in our family records, but it may have been a nickname.

    3. Hi Gene, Have you tried the Ellis Island web site? It's free, although they want you to register. You can do name searches of the passenger lists. Sometimes one has to try several surname spellings, and try again and again; but the right people may come up right away. For most of the ships the original passenger list can be viewed; these often give information on the names of other family members and the addresses they are coming from and going to. Otherwise, I might have thought she came from the Thetford, VT branch of the family, which is closer to Vershire, VT, where her husband-to-be was born. But people traveled around a lot in those days, visiting outlying relatives, and she may have been visiting cousins when they met. Someone should write a book on how people met in the early days, when travel was so difficult. Most of the time they married people from the next farm or in the same village, but a lot of times they didn't
