    2. Charlene, Please correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds as if you have a Johnson genealogy book that is pretty up to date - true? If that is the case would you be able to answer a question for me? I'm researching John C. Reed and his descendants of Durham, Middlesex Co., CT and one of the family records says that John married a Rebecca Johnston/Johnson of Branford around 1785-95. Do you have any suggestions or information to share? This is one of those "family stories" that has no substantiation in the records that I am able to find, but so much has proven to be true I'm not ready to ignore it yet. Thanks for anything you may have to offer. Carol Hubbell Boggs

    2. Dear Lois, I have checked my Johnson genealogy book thoroughly and can find no Phillip who meets your criteria. The earliest Phillip I have was born in 1892 in Vermont. I know this name is not common in my Johnson genealogy. I also checked Ezekiels, which were several, and could find no correlation. This book has many, many names, but of course, I am sure not all are included. Sorry I couldn't help you. Charlene

    3. Charlene, I am wondering if the Johnson genealogy you refer to has any connection to Johnsons in Rhode Island. I have a Philip Johnson, b.1822 in Marion County, Ohio. I suspect his family may have gone from RI or CT to Ohio, and for some reason the family -- or at least my ancestor Philip -- came back here to Coventry, RI. Philip's father was also a Philip, who married Priscilla Nichols. I believe there are two previous generations of Ezekiels, either in Ohio, CT, or RI. Any of this sound familiar? This makes him only 16 marrying in a place FAR removed from the usual distances people traveled to court and marry in this time period. Do you know for sure that the person born in CT in 1798 is the same person marrying in VA in 1814? It would also be rather unusual for a boy of 16 to marry. Perhaps you have some reason for connecting the people in the two events, but I'd look with some skepticism on this being the same person without *very* solid evidence. Dona Ritchie

    1. Re: [CTMID] JOHNSON - Middletown, Middlesex, CT
    2. I am a direct descendant of Captain John Johnson of Roxbury, Massachusetts, the grandfather of Isaac Johnson (1643-1719) of Middletown, Connecticut. What information would you like to have? There is lots of information on the internet, as well as books documenting the lineage of this family. Initially, I will tell you the birth dates of his children are as follows: Isaac - 1670 Daniel - 1672 John - 1674 Joseph - 1677 Nathaniel - 1678/79 Elizabeth - 1680/81 William - 1683 Mary - 1686/87 Ebenezer - 1692 There was only one Issac. These children were very much intertwined with the Blake family of Middletown, as four of these siblings married Blakes. This family has more descendants in Middletown than probably any other family. Joseph Johnson probably has the most descendants in this town as he remained there for his life and had 15 children from two wives. Contact me if you want more information. Charlene

    1. Re: [CTMID] JOSEPH WICKHAM HUBBARD---Breaking the Block
    2. Sue, You welcome. Please don't take the following personally. I am sending this through the list, not to embarrass you, but because there a many others who can also benefit from my comments. You did good job describing Joseph and Susan given the information you have I learned more about his wife (her correct name) and his daughter.. Presumption can be a huge, major road block in genealogical research. It narrows our thinking, and keeps us from exploring new vistas. Thanks to the computer, we can sit in our homes, and look for information in faraway communities with no knowledge of those communities. When I sent you the information from the Barbour, I also gave you some suggestions where to look to find more Hubbards. Your response was: "Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out to much on Joseph Wickham Hubbard and his ancestors. I presume they were all in Middletown, but they had to come from someplace." These couple sentences gave me the impression that you are not familiar with the geography of Connecticut and the closeness of the towns, In some parts of this country towns are considered small because of the size of their population. In Connecticut, many of our towns are small in land area. All towns share common borders with other towns. It is very easy for members of the same family to live near each other and still live in different towns. They can also live in one town and go to church or work in another town. In addition to giving you the information from the Barbour Colection, I also gave you the information on how to go to the same site so you could do further research yourself. Did you go there to see what else you could learn about Joseph Wickham Hubbard. Did you look for his siblings? If you had, you would have found he had sisters and a brother. There were marriage records for three of his sisters. Do you know where Joseph and Susan lived after they married? You said the family did not move to New York until 1856. That was 26 years after their marriage. Did you check the Barbour Records for other towns to see if you could find any birth records for their children. By reorganizing the information from the Middletown Barbour collection, combining the birth and marriage records, and posting the family of Joseph 2nd and Susan Carrington with their children, back on this list, there is a good chance someone might have recognized on of the siblings and been able to help you. Just using this information we will see that Joseph 2nd and his children married into five different families, Brooks, Bisley, Carrington, Hall, and Rust. This gives many opportunities for someone to have the information about Joseph 2nd's parents in their family research. And it gives you a number of different ways through which you can find the same information yourself. You do not have to sit around hoping someday someone will recognize Joseph or Susan. You will really have a lot of information to work with. Add the information you have about the descendants of Joseph W. and Susan, and you have even more. You are at the beginning of the journey, not the end. Follow the clues and you will eventually find what you are looking for. 1. Re: [CTMID] JOSEPH WICKHAM HUBBARD
    2. Sue, From the Barbour Collection, Middletown Joseph 2nd married Sarah Brooks May 26, 1796 Joseph Wickham, son of Joseph 2nd and Sarah Brooks born December 6, 1802 Joseph W. married Suana M. Carrington, October 20 1830 by Rev. John Crane. [my note: this may or may not be Joseph Wickham; don't assume that it is without further verification] You can find this information posted on the internet at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ Look for the Barbour Collection link. You will find many Hubbard's living in Middletown and the surrounding towns. Hubbard is surname that is associated with the town of Meriden. There is a park bearing the family name in that town. Just in the Middetown Barbour collection there were a number of listings for the name Joseph Hubbard. Joseph ND may not be the son of a Joseph. The ND may mean there was an older sibling with the name Joseph who died before this Joseph was born; or there was another older member of the family with the name Joseph. Suggest you look at the Barbour records for a number of towns to see what you can find. Brooks is another surname that is found in many towns in that area. It's more likely that J. W. 's grandparents will be found in CT than in New York. Who are the Hubbard's you are trying to connect to their eastern roots? Where are they living and what years? Describe the family. It's easier to recognize people when you see them in their families (parents, children etc) than when you see them alone. Many people can have the same gives name, but every family is unique. There are always distinguishable differences. Good Luck and Happy Hunting, Marilyn CT People don't recognize your ancestors; they recognize their ancestors in your posting. 2. Sue, when I was little (a LONG time ago!) we used to spend the summers in Norfolk, CT. There were some Hubbards there at the time (early or mid 1930's). I can't remember the kids' names, but I think there were 2 boys...(this is digging 'way back, but I know there were some Hubbards there at that time. It's possible that, like us, they were only there for the summer. (In our case, we stayed in a house owned by some distant cousins, which was always empty...except, of course, when we were there.) Norfolk was a wonderful little town, and from what I've heard lately, it still is; hasn't really grown or become too commercial although I think there are several B&B's there now. I realize this doesn't help you much...sorry! Barbara in MO (but originally from NYC) P.S. I just looked at a book I have about Norfolk, and in the index there's an Alan Hubbard. It mentions him as being one of the men who played golf in 1929 on the new golf course.
