My great great great grandfather was Enos R. Booth. According to the 1850 Census in Hardyston Twp, Sussex County, NJ it says he was born in Connecticut and was 40 years of age. Many of his children also use Connecticut to list their fathers place of birth. Except my great great grandfather (Enos' son) used Bath, New York. I tend to believe that Enos was born in Conn. and later must have lived in Bath, NY. Enos died at a young age...in his 40's and during a time that there were no vital records in NJ. I cant find a grave for him...and it seems that he has been lost in time. I need to learn more about him...especially who his parents were if I were to continue work on my Booth line. I am sort of dead ended at him. If there is anyone who ever comes across this name or if anyone does research at the State Archives in Hartford could help me i would appreciate it very much. Thanks, JIM BOOTH Highland Mills, Orange County, New York jbooth75@optonline.net
Just a reminder that there is a gateway from RootsWeb's Middlesex Co. message board that sends posts from that board to our list. Unfortunately, the gateway is only in one direction and if you want to answer one of these messages, you need to click on the link in the message and post the answer to the board. Replying to the list means that all list members will see your answer, but the original poster will not unless he's also a member. Jane list mom http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/

If Prudence, b. 1729, had son William in 1740, she would have been but 11 years old. You have to challenge these dates; don't take things for granted, please. And what was your question, anyway??????

LDS location search lists Portland & Chatham wills from 1824 & later. East Hampton Says Portland has early 1800 wills for East Hampton. Portland probate is hard to reach by phone due to limited hours. Middletown doesn't have the wills I need. Where should I be looking? I'm looking for wills for: Abraham Baily circa 1811 Isaac Smith circa 1818 * 1824 Amasa Smith after 1806 Thanks
There is a good chance that the probate records that you are looking for are in East Haddam or in Colchester. The Connecticut Researcher's Handbook has: East Hampton Probate District , organized 1 June 1824 from the East Haddam and Middletown Probate Districts. Portland Probate District, organized 22 April 1913 from the East Hampton Probate District. East Haddam Probate District, organized October 1741 from the Hartford Probate District. Probate Districts organized from the East Haddam Probate District include the Colchester, East Hampton, Hebron and Middletown Probate Districts. The records previous to May 1832 are at the Colchester Probate Court. Janece Streig is continuing her work on the Saybrook Land Records and Book 1, pages 81 to 100, are now on line. These records include early deeds, family records (births, marriages, deaths), cattle marks, land divisions and other information about the settlement in its earliest years. For those of you researching New London Co., just next door to Middlesex, Janece is also working on transcribing the history of the county and chapter 18, Biographies (in two parts because of the length) is now also on line. There are also new files from Coralynn Brown (Long Island town histories) & Dave Swerdfeger (births & deaths from Arlington, Middlesex Co., MA) that have recently gone on line. Enjoy! I am sure there is a connection but it probably connects back a bit earlier. I, too, have a Michigan connection with the Stow(e) family as my great, great grandfather came here (I now live in Michigan) from Ohio after the Civil War. It appears that Michigan was one of the migration trails so I shouldn't have been surprised. Some of his children were already here when he came in 1873. Good luck in your efforts....if you ever find anything on Seth Stowe...Simeon's brother, please let me know. Mary

It does seem most likely that Provan/Stow in Norfolk County connect back to those earlier Stow's. It always made me wonder why William Stowe left his young son with another family and assumed they must be related. Although all the census references say the Provan's are scottish. I have never found what happened to William's daughter Naomi Stow, the firstborn, who was 4 in 1861. William senior's 1st wife died around 1870 after having a son George in 1870 in NY state. William Stow remarried to a widow (Mrs. Udell I think) with a child or children very quickly in NY state. Then in 1879 he went to prison in Ontario Canada. I believe he spent the remainder of his life in NY state after. The family are supposed to be in the 1870 Niagara NY census but I have not found them then or later. This is what I have on William Provan: 1851 Charlotteville township Norfolk county Ontario Canada, farmer, 36, wife Margaret also 36 with children Margaret 11, Ma! ry 9, John 7, Isabel 3, Jane 2 living in a 1 1/2 story frame house. I don't have the 1861 info but can look it up when next at the library. 1871 Charlotteville census: William Rovan (Provan) 54, Presbyterian, farmer, widower, daughters Margaret 24, Isabella 28, J?? female (that would be Jane) 16 and William STOW 9 (he was born Feb 17, 1861). In 1881 Charlotteville census: William Provan 64, farmer, daughter Magga 33 unmarried, and William STOW 19. 1891 Census John Provan - William's son - 45, I didn't write any other details for him and I don't have William Provan in 1891??. He may have died. 1901 Charlotteville census the unmarried daughter Margaret Provan(56) is at the home of her sister, Isabel D (51) and Thomas Reeves (51) with their son Charles A Reeves (19) born Sept 26, 1881. It would surely be exciting for me if I could find the parents of Schuyler STOW as well as his wife's family name. She is Lydia Ann in one of the censuses but all other references I ! have including her will have her name as Gitty Ann. There seems also to be Michigan connection that I have not been able to follow yet. But I have only been working on this family for a few months. But I have done quite well so far.

Searching for any clues I found your message. What is interesting about this message is that my Schuyler and Gitty Ann Stow both born in NY state ca 1808 (his obit says Catskill Mountains near Hudson River), moved back and forth between Niagara Falls NY and Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. They had a son William born ca 1829 - I haven't determined if he was the first born; there may be an older son Orin who married in Norfolk County around 1848. Anyway, William seems to have been some trouble, spent 6 years in Kingston Penetentiary for horse stealing and he was left $1.00 in the will! William's son, William, was born 1861, a twin, the other child died, and in the 1871 Norfolk census little William is living with William Provan (sometimes spelled Provin) a widower and his unmarried daughter. Little William appears to have been raised by the Provins as he is still in the home im 1881 and 1891. Seems like there could be a connection with you don't you think!!??
