The trial was, indeed, a slander suit, but it was brought by Thomas Staples on behalf of his wife, and it was Roger Ludlow who was the defendant. Interestingly, there seem to have been no further cases of witchcraft accusation once Staples made it clear that this could cost the accuser some money (Staples won).
