Dear fellow researchers... I wish each and every one of you a happy holiday season. Dale Call (of Westport, CT) has done extensive research on the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Regiment, comprised almost entirely of Fairfield County men. Company C, 17th C.V.I., was one of Danbury's own. After suffering numerous casualties at Gettysburg in July 1863, the unit was reorganized and moved south. Christmas 1863 was spent at Folly Island, South Carolina. James Bailey, later Editor of the Danbury News-Times, was in this unit, and frequently provided articles for the newspaper under the pseudonym "Manton". Through research at the Danbury Public Library, Dale has a copy of "Manton's" article on Christmas at Folly Island, and have posted it on the web. http://home.att.net/~DogSgt/christmas.html Be sure to visit the rest of Dale's wonderfully done site on the 17th.
