> I have the same except I have John Turney and Agnes as parents of James > Turney. > My Benjamin though, son of Thomas and Judith Harris, is married to Mary > O'Dell. I also have Benjamin Turney as son of Thomas and Judith -- would like to know the source of her being Judith Harris, please. An excellent source on the early generations of the Turney family is "The Ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley and His Wife, Arabella Bosworth" by N. Grier Parke II, edited by D. L. Jacobus:. Woodstock VT 1960. pp.. 63-65. For those who don't have accesss to that book, here are notes from it, plus D. L. Jacobus, Hist. and Genealogy of Families of Old Fairfield for the last generation given. My line here comes through Benjamin's daughter Mary who married Nathaniel Seeley. Evelyn Sanford Beran ---- Generation One 1. JAMES1 TURNEY. James was of Hollingdon and Slapton. Born [say about 1445]; died 14 Feb 1519/ 1520 and has a brass in Slapton Church. He had two wives, Amy and Elizabeth, and five sons, from whom most if not all of the Turneys of that part of Buckinghamshire and adjacent parts of Bedfordshire descended. He left a long will which indicates his piety and proves that he was a large land-owner. A John Turney of Hollingdon in the parish of Soulbury, co. Buckingham, has a brass in the Soulbury Church which shows he died 18 Mar 1502/1503 and had a wife, Agnes. He might be the father of James, but more likely is a brother. The Turneys were yeomen of the wealthier class and held lands from an early period. The surname is found in the form 'de Tourney' as early as the 13th century in the east central part of Buckinghamshire adjacent to Bedfordshire. Generation Two 2. RICHARD2 TURNEY (James1) was born circa 1475. He died between 1520 and 1524. Richard received by his father's will in 1520 the life use of a tenement and land in Hollingdon, which at his death were to go to Richard's son John in fee simple. In 1524 John, but not Richard, was taxed in Soulbury. Generation Three 3. JOHN3 TURNEY (Richard2, James1) was born circa 1500. He married Alice (8689) circa 1529. He died before 1540. John was of Hollingdon, a hamlet in Soulbury. Perhaps had a first wife; married (2) about 1529 Alice, possibly Alice Sheppard of Littlecott, widow of Thomas Gurney. Alice was the mother of John's son Barnard. John's will was recorded in a lost Register. ALICE. She was widow of Thomas Gurney when she married John Turney. Alice's will dated 31 Dec 1551, proved 16 Jan 1551/1552. She died between 1551 and 1552 in Hollingdon, Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England. Generation Four 4. BARNARD4 TURNEY (John3, Richard2, James1) was born circa 1531. He married (1) Elizabeth Sheppard (4345), daughter of John Sheppard of Wavenden. He married (2) Elizabeth Meade in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England. He was buried on 12 July 1612 in Hollingdon, Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England. Will dated 25 Nov 1611, proved 14 Nov 1612. ELIZABETH SHEPPARD. Child of Barnard4 Turney and Elizabeth Sheppard were: 5. i. THOMAS5 TURNEY, born circa 1560; married Judith. ELIZABETH MEADE. Elizabeth's will dated 29 Jan 1617/1618, proved 23 Nov 1625 Generation Five 5. THOMAS5 TURNEY (Barnard4, John3, Richard2, James1) was born [say about 1560]; died perhaps about 1624. Married probably Judith (____), as a Judith Turney of Hollingdon appears in 1623 as a creditor of an estate of which Thomas Turney was overseer. Three of his sons gave the name Judith to a daughter. Thomas Turney was taxed at Surcott in Linslade in 1593, and was called of Surcott in connection with wills of 1603 and 1604. The evidence indicates that after the death of his father at Hollingdon in 1612, Thomas turned over his farm at Surcott to his sons Robert and Barnard, and moved to his father's house at Hollingdon in Soulbury. He was church warden at Soulbury in 1613. Children of Thomas5 Turney and Judith were as follows: 6. i. BENJAMIN6 TURNEY, born before 1600 in Surcott, Linslade, Buckinghamshire, England; married Mary Odell. ii. ROBERT TURNEY. iii. BARNARD TURNEY . Generation Six 6. BENJAMIN6 TURNEY (Thomas5, Barnard4, John3, Richard2, James1) was born in co. Buckingham, England, probably at Surcott, slightly before 1600. He died at Fairfield CT 1648. Married at Salford co. Bedford (adjacent to Buckingham) England 12 July 1630 Mary Odell, dau. John and Joan (Bingley) Odell. There is strong circumstantial evidence for placing Benjamin as a son of Thomas and Judith Turney of Soulbury, Buckinghamshire. Perhaps his wife was related in some way to Ann (Halsey) wife of Thomas Wheeler Sr. of Fairfield, for she bequeathed her best hat to Rebecca Turney, and her will was witnessed by Robert Turney, two of the children of Benjamin. Benjamin, his wife and older children emigrated about 1638/1639 and settled in Concord MA by 1639. He was made a freeman of Massachusetts Bay June 1641. He removed, we suppose with Rev. Mr. Jones, the Wheelers and others to Fairfield CT in Sept 1644, where he died four years later. The first, second and fourth children were baptized at Soulbury, Bucks, England; the fifth, sixth and seventh were born at Concord MA. Jacobus: Families of Old Fairfield 1:618-619. At Concord MA by 1639; freeman there June 1641. Three of the children recorded at Concord -- does not specify which ones. Removed, we suppose in Sept. 1644 with Rev. Mr. Jones, the Wheelers, and others, to Fairfield. Here he died in 1648. 'it may be guessed that he or his wife was closely related to Ann wife of Thomas Wheeler, Sr., for in her will 1659, which was witnessed by Robert Turney, Mrs. Wheeler gave her best hat to Rebecca Turney.' Inventory 6 June 1648; gives children's ages; wife is Mary. The inventory of the estate of Benjamin Turney of Fairfield, taken 6 June 1648, was presented by Mary Turney. Ages of the 8 children specified in the probate records. Receipts given to Joseph Middlebrook by several of the heirs in 1661 prove the marriages of some of the daughters. MARY ODELL. Mary emigrated to New England with her husband Benjamin Turney. She may have been a first cousin of William Odell of Concord MA and Fairfield CT, as she had no brother of the name, but had three Odell uncles: Richard, Thomas, and William, all known to have had issue, but not traced. Mary married (2) Joseph Middlebrook. (Jacobus Additions & Corrections to Families of Old Fairfield p. 24-5) Children of Benjamin6 Turney and Mary Odell were as follows: 7. i. MARY7 TURNEY, christened 18 September 1631 in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England; married Capt. Nathaniel Seeley, son of Lieut. Robert Seeley and Mary Mason, circa October 1649. She died before 1674. 8. ii. CAPT. ROBERT TURNEY, christened 13 June 1633 in Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, England; married Elizabeth Holly. 9. iii. JUDITH TURNEY), born circa 1635; married Sergt. John Wheeler. 10. iv. ANN TURNEY, born circa 1637; married Thomas Sherwood. 11. v. REBECCA TURNEY, born 16 February 1639/40 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA; married Stephen Sherwood. vi. SARAH TURNEY) was born on 11 December 1641 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA. She married Capt. Matthew Sherwood, son of Thomas Sherwood and Mary Fitch, before 1670. 12. vii. RUTH TURNEY), born 28 January 1643/44 in Concord, Middlesex County, MA; married Richard Bouton. viii. BENJAMIN TURNEY) was born circa 1645. He married (1) Rebecca Keeler, daughter of Ralph Keeler and (first wife), on 16 November 1671 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT. He died in 1694 in Fairfield, Fairfield County, CT.
