I have been > searching for a connection for a Julia Bouton born somewhere in NY abt. 1820 > but have not found anything. I do have a copy of a letter written April 15, 1887, in Poplar Ridge(?), from "EH Boughton" to "My kind Friend": "Your favor is just at hand and I hasten to answer thanking you most truly for your kind office, in the aid you have given in making more full and complete the history of genealogy of the families of Boughtons & Boutons in America. You have added several names of persons whom we knew of only vaguely or not at all. "Now I will give you some items of Bouton history which our researches have made us acquainted with, and which may be of interest to yourself & your uncles, aunts, and their children. "In the year 1726 Nathaniel Bouton of Norwalk Ct., born in 1691, married Hannah Betts, daughter of John Betts. They subsequently settled in New Canaan Ct., a town some 15 or 20 miles N.W. from Norwalk. They had sons, Nathaniel, Jehiel, Samuel and Daniel. Mrs. Dr. Hyatt of Cortland to whom we owe our chief knowledge of this family of ____ Speaks of them as “the 4 brothers” and so we designate them. But the 4 brothers had 3 sisters; and in our investigations we found that there was also another brother named John, and I think one more - but as I am now writing from memory only, I may be in error on this point. This Jehiel, you will see as I proceed, was your grand-mother’s grand-father. The oldest of the 4, Nathaniel, m'd in 1755 Lydia Penoyer; Jehiel m'd Anne Finch 1754; whom Samuel m'd we do not know. He lived on Long Island. He had 2 sons Benajah(?) and Samuel & two daughters. Daniel, youngest of the 4, born in 1740, m'd Mary Mead; He was a Capt. in the American army of the Revolution - was wounded in a skirmish near Norwalk, and received a considerable sum from the state for his services. He was a deacon in the Congregational Church & is identified as "Dea. Daniel." The first 2 children of this family were daughters. Hannah Bouton m'd Timothy Delevan & had 12 children, whose names we have on record; Abigail the 2nd dau. m'd Josiah Weed & had 15 children. "I will now proceed with some account of Jehiel & his descendents. For this we are chiefly indebted to one of his grandsons - Dr. Chauncey Boughton of Waterford N.Y. though we have ___ data from other sources. "When I was in Ct. a few weeks ago, I found his name in the town records of Ridgefield. His grave is to be seen in an ancient burying ground at Titicus(?) a mile or 2 north of Ridgefield village. Just when he died I cannot tell. I will here give an extract from the account given us by Dr. Chauncey Boughton (he spells his name with the gh). He says "Jehiel Bouton, one of 4 brothers, had children, Jehiel, Stephen, Seth, John & perhaps more, and a daughter who married Moses Stevens. The records we have name Nathan and David also among the sons of Jehiel, Gen. Jehiel Jr., your great grandfather, was a Lieut in the Revolutionary army. After the war he married, and in 1797 he settled in Dryden. We were informed that he had several children, but had not learned their names. You have given us several of them. One more favor I would ask, since you kindly offer to assist in this work. Our plan is to include in our account, those who are connected with those of our name, by marriage. Thus in the case of your grand-mother the record would read like this: "Abigail Bouton b. Dryden, N.Y. 5 May 1779, married (place) 17 Nov. 1799, Benjamin Brown, son of (both parents), settled in Genoa Cayuga C. N.Y. She d. Genoa, 21 Aug 1861. He d. "Children of Benj & Abigail (Bouton) Brown, Genoa. "Daniel Brown b. etc. "Thus we would insert the names of all their children in the order of their births, dates of birth & of marriage, if married, full name of the person married, & of parents of the same. So we would take the record, of all your grandmother’s children - of births, marriages, & deaths of such as have died & of their children's, including of course your own. "Very respectfully EH Boughton." ========== Whew! Hope that wasn't too long for those not searching Boutons. But what a treasure. This and one other letter in my possession - written in 1886 re some Scottish family members (seems genealogy was trendy back then!) - have provided invaluable information for tracing my ancestors. So, let’s all dig up and publish our old letters and Bible records!
