Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ct/Fairfield/3271 Surname: Bailey ------------------------- I don't have any information on your William Baileys', but Maria Bailey was a sister of my Calista Bailey, and therefore, Emma Jane Light and James Williams were first cousins. Gilbert Light (it says Leight on his tombstone) and Maria are buried in the Bailey plot in the Methodist cemetery in Brewster. Nancy and Mary Jane Bailey were sisters and daughters of Samuel Bailey by his second wife, Hannah Wright. I understand that the Bailey who joined with Barnum was from the Midwest and adopted his surname from a Bailey that he worked for in Putnam county. But numerous Baileys worked in the circus trade, and Hecaliah Bailey brought the first elephant into the United States and exhibited him around the country. He named the elephant "Old Bet" after his wife and also used him at the hotel he founded called the Elephant Inn (still exists). Hecaliah's daughter, another Calista, took over and ran the Elephant Inn. Her husband was Enoch Crosby, Jr, son of Enoch Crosby, the spy, and made famous by James Fenimore Cooper. Hope this helps. The is a lot of information about the Baileys, and the Bailey Family Association has a book.
