Also living there was a Frank Green, who may be Nancy's brother. Stanley and Nancy had been married two years and had two children by then, but only James Raymond Bouton was still living. He was 5 months old. Stanley is indexed as Bonton, so you may have had trouble finding him in the 1900 census. I was unable to find a record of Stanley's birth in Stamford in 1868. Maybe Stanley was his first name. He is listed as H. Stanley Bouton in one of the censuses and was listed as being born in New York.

Sad to say there are no more living Metrash's. My g-grand had only one son, Robert who I just recently found out did have a daughter who must have died young since she was never spoken of by the family. Adam H. was deaf as was his wife Elizabeth. Their son Robert was also deaf. Their girls wern't. They were Mary H. b 1862-Caroline b 1869 and Lucy 1882. Adam had a sister Angeline (b1833) who married John Hawley Hubbard (b 1831). Thanks to an on line friend we have gone back to an Ezekiel b 1792. What has me most curious is how they got to Norwalk in the first place. I'm thinking the whaleing industry, since they seem to be boatmen (?) or fisherman. The only other place in the world I have found that name is in Egypt (?), I also know that in the 1880 census they are listed as mulatto, which could mean African or Native American mixture. Thanks again hope to hear from you. Dorothy

My grandfather and several others owned boats and were oystermen also. Most of them also belonged to the SNBC (So. Norwalk Boat Club). The earliest I go back is the late 1880's early 1900's. It is possible my family knew your family. I can look up census info for you as I have access to Heritage Quest. Can I have a few more recent names and maybe some birth dates and also Adam H spouse so I can help you out better? I live in PA but visit CT on occasion so I might be a good resource for you. I have a yearbook from 1930 Norwalk High if you find that any relatives might have graduated at this time. I also have a 1939 Nat Guard/Militia book for CT which I could look in to see if your ancestors were in any military at this time. However, it is not indexed and is very time consuming to search through. Another thing, the library has a great website where you can look into the index of the Norwalk Hour so yo! u may look up obituary dates and contact them to get a copy (only certain years are available though). I'll be more than happy to do what I can. Stacey

They first appear in Norwalk with an Ezekiel Metrash born 1792 (info from tombstone in St Pauls Cemetary). Adam H. appears in the 1880 census with the occupation of boatbuilder. His ethnicity is mulatto. I know that he was deaf and could use sign language both his daughters Mary and Caroline told me this and they were fluent in it as well. His only son Robert Legrand was also deaf. Adam was also an oysterman and owned 2 boats the "Silence" and the "Whisper". The family also owned property listed on an 1847 map of Norwalk near the river. Hope some one can help me fill in more of the gaps, like how they got here and when. I can find no other family with this name except a person in Egypt.
