Posted on: Fairfield Co. Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ct/Fairfield/3142 Surname: Stamford Records ------------------------- Stamford appears to be the only place in the United States that can't provide help. I have been getting the same lame excuse for a long time. If the town clerk can not do her job - then get a new one. I have been able to get birth/death certificates by mail from every place in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusettes, Vermont, and elswhere - BUT NOT STAMFORD - She must me a Gore Lieberman supporter.
All birth, marriage and death records prior to 1867 were destroyed in a fire. As a result I don't believe that there are any vital records for New Fairfield prior to 1867. You might find some information in Church Records and possibly in Land Records. Happy Holidays everyone... I am hoping that someone on the list would know where early State birth records are for CT - circa 1760's, Fairfield County. I have checked thru the LDS list of films under "vital records" for "New Fairfield," "Fairfield County," and "Connecticut" and do not find any State Vital Records as I have in Vermont. For "New Fairfield," there are two selections: Index cards to marriages, and Birth records ONLY from 1867-1960. For "Fairfield County," is one item: "Marriages and deaths (not taken from cemetery or tombstone records), 1790-1855, Fairfield County." For "Connecticut," we get vital records for Massachusetts and private collections. So, my question is: Are there no State birth records for Connecticut for the mid-1700's? Because of territorial changes, could these records be part of New York's records? I would appreciate any clues to my dilemma. My ancestor, Simeon HUNGERFORD, supposedly is the son of Samuel HUNGERFORD and Mary GRAVES, born in 1766. However, this has not been proven, to my knowledge. (It has also been said that Simeon was born in East Haddam. I have ordered several films and have not found any record of Simeon being born there, but then again, records are minimal.) Grateful for any suggestions, Mimi Rhodes Hungerford
Your comments about Stamford CT Vital records is interesting. Particularly the comments about Gore/Lieberman. Are you aware that this is Joe Lieberman's home town, and that he graduated from Stamford High School in 1960? Maybe if you wrote to him, he can provide some help !!!
There is a microfilm through Family History Center, LDS, that has the time period you are looking for in Stamford. I hope you are near a center; if not, let me know and I will see what I can do. Sdreher

Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ct/Fairfield/3140 Surname: ------------------------- The customer service dept. of the Vital Records Section suggests that for vital records before July 1, 1897 to contact the town/city of occurrence or the Connecticut State Library at (860) 566-3692. Seeing as Stamford was not of much help maybe the library could be of assistance.
Hope this helps with research in Connecticut: Access to Birth Records: Connecticut General Statutes 7-51 and 7-51a, allows access to birth records to the following categories of individuals: * Birth records more than 100 years old: Are open to any person *Birth records less than 100 years old are open to: Person whose birth is recorded (If peron is 18 or older) Parents Grandparent or Guardian, if a minor Spouse Children (If over 18) Local Health Director Chief Elected official of Municipality or agent Attorneys Title Examiners Persons authorized by court order State or Federal Agency employee authorized by DPH Commissioner Members of incorporated genealogical societies authorized to conduct business in the State of Connecticut Any person continues to have full access to death and marriage records. ********************************* Okay, this is me again. It may be the law but I have found that from town to town the cooperation varies greatly. It may pay to join a recognized Genealogy Society yourself if you will be looking for more than one record. The following is an address for one that is authorized for the State of Connecticut and from what I gather readily accepted by town clerks. Connecticut Society of Genealogists, Inc. P.O. Box 435 Glastonbury, CT 06033-0435 It is about $36.00 to join for one year which runs May 1 to April 30 of following year. It is not prorated so at this time you would get less than 5 months for the cost of the annual fee. Still less money than hiring a researcher. (Just for the record, I am not associated with this Society nor am I a member) If you still cannot convince the town clerk that marriage records should be full access you may want to send a copy of the Statute along with a request to him/her with a nice but firm note saying that what you are asking for is within the State laws. To get a copy of the Statutes check the State's web site and follow links to the Vital Records section. Hopes this helps with your Connecticut research. Laura Allen
His estate was liable for the return of that money. You should have filed a claim with the son. If he was a member of APG, an Accredited Genealogist or was Certified, these bodies should be able to help you recover your money. All is not lost, as most of the CT vital records are available on microfilm as I stated in another post I just sent. For those of you who need CT information, most of the vital records to about 1900 have been microfilmed and are available by ordering through your friendly LDS Family History Center. It is a legislative thing. They don't have the staff because the state has mandated that these public records are not going to be readily available to the public. If you go in person, you have to prove you are a member of a recognized genealogical society. By mail, forget it! Kay Allen AG Louise O'Flaherty wrote: > Posted on: Fairfield Co.
