Hi Lois and Charnee, This one slipped by me! <g> The reason being, I am not part of rootsweb.com. The site is hosted on usgennet.org/ and we are part of the American Local History Network. Things have slowed down, it's that time of year, too much going on in all our own person lives, the holidays and all. Hope to be back in full gear in the New Year! You might find Abner in Donald Lines Jacobus: History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield. With this date, probably in Vol. 2, since Vol. 1 is the earliest settlers. Not much story to go with it, but a very well done reference for the basic facts. My FROST line is from William, through his son Daniel. Actually, Roger, the cutback in staff at the Stamford Town Clerk's office started during Republican administrations. ;-) Prior to about 1920, there were no individual certificates for Stamford vital records--they were all recorded in very big, very old ledger books which take a long time to go through. Stamford was a fairly large town at the turn of the century and a lot of people came through here. I imagine the Town Clerk's office gets a lot of requests for back records. Having gone through the records there myself, I'm not surprised that they find it difficult to respond. It's also very busy currently--every time I'm in there, there are at least five or six people waiting for copies of their own vital records certificates. There is a volunteer group through Rootsweb that is in the process of transcribing the Stamford records. Maybe at some future point they will be more accessible. Lois elseajay@earthlink.net > >
Evelyn, Thank you so much for that information because that was where I decided to look next, but I was wondering if they were destroyed in the fire also. I have Simeon's DOB from his tombstone in Swanton, but need to prove his parentage. I thought I would try to find the vital records first. I can't tell you how happy I am to know that the probate records were not burned up. You made my day!! I go to the LDS FHC once a week. I don't know what I would do without them. Louise, As Kay says, go to your nearest Latter Day Saints Family History Center. If the records are in existence, especially from New England, the LDS has filmed them years ago. I go once a week and have found everything I am looking for (which is in existence) for the price of $3.25 postage plus tax (13 cents for me at 4.16% - it depends what your sales tax is). To see if the LDS has the records you are looking for -- go to www.familysearch.com. Click on "Library," then click "Family History Catalog, click on "Place Search," Fill out "place" with the name of the town, the county, or the state. (I have better luck if I don't fill out "part of.") You will get a list of records available and then descriptions of what is on the film. I live in Hawaii and my films take one week from Salt Lake City. Happy Hunting! The vital records were destroyed, but probate records were spared. They will not give you birth dates and places, but they often will spell out family relationships in great detail, and may be just what you need to get back to the next generation. The probate records have been filmed by LDS and are available through the Family History Centers. I am a newcomer to this list, and I am in the process of tracing my Frost ancestors back. I am trying to get some documentation for each fact, plus as many historical facts about their lives and era so that I can write a family story. I believe that Abner Frost b. 1695 in Fairfield, md. Rebecca Hall 1723, d. 1778 in New Jersey is my direct ancestor. In his will written 1775 he named his son Jedediah and his grandson Josiah. I am looking for documentation of Abner's birth and marriage, and that his Jedediah is the father of the Josiah b. 1743 who settled in Allegany Co., MD around 1783. Can anyone give me some references to documentation on this? I hve received two or three versions of the Frost family line back to William Frost in England, but I find that they vary, are undocumented, and in places, quite wrong. Also, information about the lives and times of the Frosts and their community would help me put my family story together. Thanks for any help you can provide, Charnee
You don't even need a local researcher to do this research. You need to find someone with access to a Family History Center or who lives in Salt Lake City. These researchers can access the films with the information you need, make the necessary copies, and there you are! I am a Connecticut Yankee by birth and by pedigree and I have been doing extremely successful research from California for over 30 years. It is only when the information is not available in printed or microform that you need to get a local researcher. Kay Allen AG Jan Sutton wrote: > Posted on: Fairfield Co. Posted on: Fairfield Co. Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ct/Fairfield/3146 Surname: DYER, LOWDEN, CARROLL, FLANAGAN, KENNEDY, PRINDLE ------------------------- Believe me, this is not just a Stamford problem. Deep in the heart of Bush-Cheyney land (Delaware County (PA) Courthouse) they have the same problem. There has been a lengthy discussion on the PADELWA rootsweb group about this same problem in Pa. Apparently records can often end up in people's basements and attics because the courthouse doesn't have room to store them. The conclusion they reached, in shoehorning these records, is persistant, in-person, 'face time.' And even then, it is difficult. Since the advent of the internet, as perhaps you know, genealogical research has exploded. Unfortunately, staffing at these places has not.
