Thanks, I am certainly going to follow up on this lead. Seems reasonable that TB cases were directed to a specific hospital based on the practices of the time -- isolating patients etc. I can find out how long this one was operating. I appreciate the help. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Vstan12@cs.com> To: <CTFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 15, 2000 9:09 PM Subject: Re: [CTFAIRFI] TB hospital? > There was a hospital in Shelton CT, about 15 miles from Bridgeport. My O'Connell's also ended up in Bridgeport, through Norwich. Your James O'Connell is buried in St Andrews Cemetary in Colchester, CT. There is a large headstone with some info on it. Here's what I can make out: James O'Connell Native of Fermoyle Prior Parish Kerry Co. Dear All, I am trying to find death records for my great-grandmother's first husband, Fred Andrew (Americanized from who knows what). He was a Russian Jewish plumber who set up a business in Bridgeport around 1903 with a store owner named Harry Paulis. Fred met my great-grandmother in the line of duty when repairing her aunt's plumbing. They were married in 1904 and had two children. Tragically, Fred developed tuberculosis. My great-grandmother took him out to Colorado twice to try to cure him, but he succumbed, probably within months of his daughter's birth in 1907. I cannot find any death record for Fred Andrew in Bridgeport (or I should say, the kind soul who has been looking for me -- since I am stuck in Seattle, WA). I think that the explanation may be that he was taken to some special hospital for TB cases that was located elsewhere but not too far away, where he died and where he may be buried. Fred has living descendants and I would like to find his death record and resting place. Does anyone have a suggestion where a Bridgeport resident like Fred Andrew might have gone in 1907 to be hospitalized with terminal TB? Thanks, Andrea Vangor Searching in Bridgeport: VANGOR, KLINKA, DUBAK, SUPALA, DANIS, FABRI/FABRY, DEMETER, BENDER/BINDER, ANDREW
There was a TB hospital in Shelton, CT called Laurel Heights, but that closed down awhile back.. probably about 15-20 years ago. Shelton, CT isn't very far from Bridgeport, CT.. only about 15-20 minute drive. Perhaps if you called Shelton City Hall, they may have a record of his death. Their phone # is (203) 924-1555 The address is 54 Hill St, Shelton, CT 06484 Hope this helps you out! Kym ~~~~~~~~~~ "Shop Smart! Shop S-Mart!"
I love Conn. they are pleasant and helpful. In CT the records are being protected and conserved for the public. You go in and ask for info and they help you find it. I continue to find it hard to believe that the Town Clerks have the time to be so helpful to genealogists when we are just such a small part of the public they serve. I thank them all for every thing they have done to help me find my ancestors. Carol Hubbell Boggs Membership Chairperson Hubbell Family Historical Society HubbellGen@aol.com <http://www.hubbell.org>
Hi the list, Just wanted to add my compliments to the praise for the Danbury, CT. clerks office. Mr. Seri was more than helpful with all my questions and needs. I just wanted to add another "pat on the back" where deserved. Happy Holidays to all, Tony Dell.....Arizona, USA. Researching: BUTT, BARRETT, GREEN, HACKER. Wiltshire, UK.and Danbury, CT.
There was a hospital in Shelton CT, about 15 miles from Bridgeport. I believe it was for TB cases....not sure if it was around in 1907 . The name of it was Laurel Heights.....It was a state run place and closed in the late 1970's or early 80.
Dear Friend, Reference the question as to where a person might go for TB treatment near Bridgeport. Some people that I know were sent to Shelton CT for TB treatment in the 1950s and 1960s. You might wish to try there. Sincerely, George Hoyt E-Mail: GWGEHoyt@aol.com

Ohio is worse than CT. I have tried both. The first answer I got was "Why do you want that?", then when I told them, "Well, it's back there somewhere", so naturally I asked for help. "Well, it would take sometime". I read an article one time that said that you need to be politely insistant and if I know the record should be open to me by law, I say-I understand this record should be open to me by state law. Is that correct? ( I say it quite sternly but quietly) Guess what in some states the laws are different, so I have had to check to see what is really available to me in some states. The other thing I did was bring my genealogy society card from home. I found out that CT seems to honor that and allowed me to look at records as a "genealogist". That gets me the record every time. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Evans" <diet1@mediaone.net> To: <CTFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 15, 2000 10:46 AM Subject: Re: [CTFAIRFI] Bridgeport, CT Records > I hate Conn. they are unpleasant and uncooperative. Even going in person, unless you're a registered genealogist, they won't let you look yourself. I've paid their recommended genealogist to look for my great-grandfather's birth record, and spent money for the incorrect information! I didn't discover this until almost a year later when a friend visiting in Utah was able to get a copy of his death record for me. So, I guess you have to be very careful. There are other towns in CT where I have personally looked and had no problems. Staff was either helpful or at least didn't mind my looking. I know how frustrated everyone is. We all want to find our illusive relations! As was also mentioned, with everyone looking these days, offices are understaffed. Wouldn't it be nice to have some volunteers work in these places to help us all out? In the small town I live in, this is what happens. Good luck! Ginny Gage

Dear Friend, For genealogy, counties basically mean nothing in CT. They only serve as a geographical boundary. There is no County Clerk that you can write to for vital records. Since CT just eliminated the County Sheriff function this month, I'm not sure that there is anyone left on any County payroll. Connecticut, like other parts of the northeast, has all of its records maintained in the individual towns. Records in other parts of the United States are maintained at the County Level, but this is not the way it is in CT. So, you must work with the individual Town Clerks. You can write or call to The Greenwich CT Historical Society at 39 Strickland Road in Greenwich CT. Phone (203) 622-9686. Susan Richardson is the person to contact. For Vital Records, you can write or call to the City Clerks Office at 110 Field Point Road, Greenwich CT. Phone (203) 622-7700. Barbara Louden is the person to contact. She is very helpful. In looking at "Ye Historie of Ye Town of Greenwich" which is over 760 pages long and was written by Spencer Mead in 1911, there is no information on Elihu Fuller, despite the book being filled with genealogical information about people in Greenwich. Sorry that I could not be more helpful. Sincerely, George Hoyt E-Mail: GWGEHoyt@aol.com
