OK, made it to Melbourne, FL and will be starting our way up the coast back to NY by the New Year. Looks like we will be traveling in the awful cold wet stuff! <grrrr..> Back to the winter is looks like! Hope everyone is staying warm! Here is the first of the look ups: John N Lewis, Voluntown: Accountant. Mr. Lewis was born in Exeter, RI, April 23, 1847. He is the son of Deacon James Lewis, a prosperous farmer, and a grandson of Colonel Nathan B Lewis, a veteran of the war of 1812. In his boyhood he worked on the farm summers and attended school winters, receiving his education in the public schools, select schools, and at Schofield's Commercial college. After leaving school he taught for several terms with good success. In 1870 he was United States census gatherer for Exeter, and in 1872 was elected justice of the peace by Rhode Island legislature. In October of the year he came to Voluntown, where he has been with the firm of Ira G Briggs & Co. and their successors, to the present time. He was postmaster of Voluntown under the Hayes and Garfield and Arthur administrations, but was removed by President Cleveland. He has been a member of the school board of the town for many years, and is no town clerk and treasurer, and registrar of voters. He was elected to the lower house of the Connecticut legislature for 1889, by 99 majority out of 203 votes, and served on the committee on appropriations. He was returned to the house at the last election, and is now a member of that body, and chairman of the committee on unfinished business. Mr. Lewis is an ardent republican and a worker for the success of the party. He professes no religion, classifying himself as a materialist. He is a Mason and an Odd Fellow and stands high in those orders. His wife was Nietta Lee prior to marriage, and they have one child. Mr. Lewis is one of the active business and political forces in his part of the state. The end Terre

The clown prince dies at home in his sleep Saturday. The Associated Press GREENWICH, Conn. (Fairfield Co.) Victor Borge, the daffy pianist whose whimsical approach to the classics earned him the moniker the clown prince of Denmark, died Saturday. He was 91. Borge died at home in sleep, his longtime manager, Bernard Gurtman, said. Borge had just returned from Copenhagen, the city of his birth, and was excited about spending Christmas with his family, Gurtman said. Borge would have turned 92 on Jan. 3. For decades, Borge delighted audiences by deflating the pomposity of classical music. He fell off his bench, played music upside down and in weird ways, and repeatedly milked laughs from such classic routines as phonetic punctuation in which he used goofy sounds to indicate commas, periods and question marks in his monologue. He kept up a busy career into his 80s, touring and issuing videos, including The Best of Victor Borge, which sold some 3 million copies. Some people reach the point where they must try desperately to hold on to something that isnt there anymore, no matter how great they are, he said in a 1986 interview. This is where I am very, very lucky. We all do what we can, we all have limitations. Apparently, within my limitations, there is enough to go on and on and on and on. Borge performed 100 or more nights a year, sometimes as pianist and sometimes as conductor, usually as a clown but sometimes in dead earnest. In his later years, he directed Mozarts Magic Flute in Cleveland and prepared a concert version of Carmen.
