I thought I would make another stab at finding a documented connection between William Frost's (Fairfield Co, d. 1644/45) great-grandson, Abner of Elizabeth, NJ (Abner>Joseph>Daniel>William) and the Josiah Frost who appeared in Allegany County, MD in the 1780s. Although it is widely believed that the Josiah Frost named in Abner's will as his grandson is the same one that arrived in MD, I have not so far found any proof. the problem is that there is no record of the MD Josiah that shows his birth or parentage as far as I know. There was a Josiah Frost who lived in Orange, NJ, very near where Abner lived, but there are records of him being there long after the Josiah appeared in MD. And Jedediah, Abner's son, seems to disappear after the will names him. (There was a Jedediah whose will was registered in NJ about 1849 but that is too late for it to be Abner's son.) A NJ Josiah Frost married Elizabeth Parcell. Then a Josiah and Jedediah and Joseph Frost appeared in Loudin Co., VA shortly before the 1780's. That Josiah had a wife named Elizabeth. A deed signed in VA for Joseph or Josiah had a man named Stites as a witness. There was a Stites family in Fairfield. Can anyone tell me if some Stites's moved to VA? Shortly after the VA Josiah and Elizabeth sold their land, the MD Josiah appears on land records in Cumberland. No MD records mention Elizabeth, and his will (1813) does not, either. So the connection between the Abner, Jedediah and Josiah of NJ and the Josiah in MD is pretty tenuous. The DAR apparently accepts the connection between the VA & MD Josiahs. The VA Josiah served in the Rev. War. Descendants of the MD Josiah are eligible for membership. But getting back to NJ and CT has me stumped. If anyone has any clues to this puzzle, please let me know. Charnee Smit descendant of Josiah Frost of MD
Beth, It's good to hear that someone else remembers Benedict's from the old days. My family moved to Monroe in 1952 and certainly by 1954 I was going with my father over to Benedict's to pick up seeds and chicken feed, I believe AGWAY was then known as Eastern Farmers Cooperative or something like that. Do you also remember the Big Y Feed Store over on Route 25? When the supermarket chain Big Y came out I thought they were one in the same, just switched from animals to humans. By the way, Bill Benedict's oldest son, daughter Jane and his wife still operate the store. Ed Hagerty

Posted on: Fairfield County Obituaries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ct/FairfieldObits/10456 Surname: HUBBARD ------------------------- This was found in a journal dated 1889. I'm not sure of the day or paper it was published in, but thought it might be of interest. LUTHER PRESCOTT HUBBARD Luther Prescott Hubbard, for thirty-four years secretary of the New England Society in the city of New York, died at his homein Greenwich, Conn., Sept 18, after a few days' illness from bronchial pneumonia. Mr. Hubbard was born at Hollis, NH., June 30, 1808. He attended the district school and Pinkerton Academy in Derry, and but for lack of health would have taken the college education which he ardently desired. In 1824, at Hashua, NH, he had a hand in the building of the first cotton mill in the country, when Lowell, "the city of spinkels." could boast only one small frame factory. In 1825 Mr. Hubbard was, with his father, shaping stones for the Bunker Hill monument. two years later he came to New ork and filled with much satisfaction the place of confidential clerk to Ira Morris & Co. , dealers in granite. In early life Mr. Hubbard had been to a certain extent identified with a set of freethinkers in Boston. Later a great change came over him; in 1833 he became actively interested in the promotion of Christianity among the sailors of this port. The New York Marine Bible Society chose him as its first agent to distribute Bibles among seamen. In 1863 Mr. Hubbard was chosen financial agent of the American Seamen's Friend Society, and for many years had the somewhat unenviable task of soliciting funds. this duty he discharged with rare tact. Thirty six years ago Mr. Hubbard removed to Greenwich, Conn., and built himself a house, which has been among the landmarks of that region. Mr. Hubbard was the author of a "History of the Hubbard FAmily," the descendants of George H. Hubbard, who came from England in 1600; a member of the New Hampshire Antiquarian Society, and for four years warden of the borough of Greenwich, Conn. Mr. Hubbard leaves a widow and four children. One son, L.P. Hubbard of Minneapolis, is at the head of the financial department of the Pillsbury Washburn Flour Mills; another, Frederick A. Hubbard, is a lawyer at Greenwich, Conn. and another is W. N. Hubbard, a physician of this city.

Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ct/Fairfield/13357 Surname: CARROLL, DYER, LOWDEN, KENNEDY ------------------------- Fairfield County, Greenwich, Byram: I am trying to recall some names and places that my father (now deceased) told me about in stories from his youth. First, I am trying to remember the name of a family who were friends of his. My dad told me that the sons suffered from hemophilia, died at a relatively young age, and were buried in an island tower visible from some of the Byram shore mansions. The family was well known in Greenwich. Second, I would like to know if the "Hirshorn Castle" still exists at Byram Shore. My dad had a lot of fun there when he was young and told me great stories about Mr. Hirshorn and family. The castle was on the shore of the Long Island Sound. Hirshorn was the CEO (I believe) of General Cigar. Thanks for any help.

Posted on: Fairfield Co. Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Ct/Fairfield/13352 Surname: REED, SHEPARD ------------------------- I am looking for information on the parents of Daniel Reed, born in 1787 in CT. His father was supposedly a "Sea Captain and an Artist." I have never found his father's name. I notice in the 1790 census at Fairfield Co, Greenwich twp. CT, that there was a "Captain Eli Reed." Could there be a connection? My ancestor Daniel Reed and wife Prudence (Shepard) had the following children who were born in MA and NY: Abigail, Daniel, William, Lewis, John W., Mary, and Cornelia. I noticed a head of household "Abigail Reed" in the 1790 census at Fairfield Co., Greenwich twp. also. Since Daniel's oldest daughter was given the name Abigail, I thought there could be a connection there also. Does anyone have information on this Reed family? Thank you for any advice you can give me.
