Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ct/Fairfield/13373 Surname: PORTER ------------------------- Can anyone supply a "current geographic location" for the landform/area known as Squabble Hill somewhere in Fairfield Co. According to one county history, it was named after a dispute by a local citizen named Porter and a squad of British troops at the time of the burning of Danbury. A contemporary map reference (a USGS topo sheet) is highly desired. Is this area still known as Squabble Hill today? I cannot seem to locate it on any detailed map or gazette of the county. Can you help?

THE HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD, VOL. 1, Donald Lines Jacobus, 1930: Beers, James. Prob. brother of Anthony. He bought land in Fairfield from George Squire, 27 Apr. 1659. He m. Martha Barlow, dau. of John, 1st, whose will 1674 named dau. Martha Beers. On 26 Feb. 1682 [1682/3] and in other records he was called Sr., his son being then of mature age. Will 14 Nov. 1694, proved 28 Nov. 1694; wife Martha; son Joseph; daus. Martha wife of Joseph Bulkley, Deborah wife of Samuel Hull, and Elizabeth wife of John Darling; children of son James dec'd (only David named). Jacobus' HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES OF OLD FAIRFIELD is an important and extremely credible documentation of early Fairfield County, Connecticut. Although not infallible, if the information was to be had, Jacobus found it. Good luck. --- Scott Foster

Do you remember what was at the corners of Bedford and Hoyt back when you lived in Stamford? I get the impression that the Police Station is on one of them these days. Bye for now. Hi : I'm a rather new subscriber to this mail list. I'm making an inquiry about an Elizabeth Smith of Fairfield, Ct.. She was born about 1650 in Fairfield and is said to have been a daughter of Richard and Bathsheba (Rogers) Smith. According to a book on old families of Fairfield she married a John Whitney on 17 Mar. 1675 in Norwalk, Ct.. Now, this John Whitney was said to have been the son of Henry Whitney (original imigrant) and his wife Sarah and was born about 1642. When and where is unknown for sure. Can anyone shed some light on this John Whitney and his wife Elizabeth Smith. I have all their children accounted for but need more information on them. Also, anyone have any information on Richard Smith his wife Bathsheba Rogers also Henry Whitney and his wife Sarah or any of their children. Thank you. Steve Wilder

Dear People, Back in December when Stamford directories were free for a bit on Ancestry, I struck gold but didn't realize it!!! My hard-to-find ancestor is my great-grandmother, Henrietta Emeline HOYT, who was a Stamford HOYT, but was born in Washington Territory in 1859, married in Boston and died in Melbourne, Australia. Her father was Samuel HOYT. For several years now I have been trying to work out who the "EVH" who sent her postcards in 1905-1906 (to Vermont) could be. As well as that I have known from family hearsay that she grew up with a cousin called Miss M. Virginia (Jennie) McKay. In December, I did a search for Hoyt in Stamford on the business directory, and came up with 240 matches. I trawled through them, but found little that looked helpful, except a Miss Emeline V. HOYT at Bedford, cor. Hoyt in 1887-1888. I saved the page because Emeline is my ggm's middle name. Silly me!! I didn't realize what her initials were. :) I also searched on McKAY, and totally overlooked Miss M.V. McKAY, teacher, Bedford cor. Hoyt, though I also saved that page. (The only other McKAYs were a vet, Dr. D.J. McKAY and John McKAY at YT Works on Ann Street.) Today, I printed these 2 sheets and finally noticed the 2 ladies at the same address. A couple of hours later the EVH initials hit me. Does anybody out there have further light to shed? Who is Emeline V. Hoyt? Could she have had a close relative called Samuel? How is she related to Miss M.V. McKay? What is the intersection of Bedford and Hoyt like now? Where do I look next? Hoping someone has some suggestions. Rosemary in Melbourne, Australia

Hello group, Some time back, I found a beautiful picture of The First Congregational Church in Fairfield which I bookmarked to go back and "save". Well, now I can't find the bookmark or the website either. It showed the ancient stone church (prob. from 1600's) with tombstones and trees in the foreground and a pink-blooming tree off to the left - just beautiful, especially for wallpaper! Does anyone happen to have the picture, know where I saw it, or have the URL? I would be most grateful if anyone with some knowledge of this picture would drop me a line. I think there was another picture there too and I'm pretty sure it was a Fairfield Co. website. My thanks go to anyone who can help me find this. Dolores

Their farm is about 20 miles southeast of Danbury in northeastern Fairfield County. Over the past 60 years or so they have continued to farm, but have also been involved in running a feed store selling feeds, seeds, fertilizers and farm animals, currently under the regional Co-op of AGWAY.
