My family record, which my great-grandfather compiled nearly a hundred years ago, lists his grandmother, Freelove Haley, born Freelove Pelham, as having been born in New Canaan, CT, around 1755. At some point the family relocated to Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York. Does anyone have any record of a Pelham family living in New Canaan during that time frame? Any neighboring town might be a possibility as well. One other child was left at the Danbury Home for Homeless Children. Two boys ages 14 and 12 were made wards of the state. They would attend school during the day and then work on area farms. This family was from Sherman, Fairfield Cty, CT. I have been able to find the children who were in Norwalk and Danbury. My question is where do I look for the two oldest children? I have looked at the 1910 Federal Census at the towns surrounding Sherman and have found nothing. Any suggestions as were I can look now or who I can write to find out this information. Thanks, Bev

Posted on: Fairfield Co. Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ct/Fairfield/13411 Surname: PORTER ------------------------- >From the above mentioned Streeter, local history reference: "It is related that brother of Joshua Porter, John, besought by his sister-in-law, went to the village to see what the British were doing and came upon three members of a picket stationed on Park Avenue. They commanded him to halt. "What for?" he inquired, still continuing toward them. "You are our prisoner" said they. "Guess not" he laconicallly replied, moving steadily upon them. "We'll stick you through and through if you don't stop" one of them threatened, advancing close to him. John Porter was a man of poweful build, strong and quick. They were close upon him and there as a gulch in back of them. In a flash he grasped the foremost trooper and hurled him against the other two, and the three went into the gulch in a demoralized heap. One might wish that the story would end with John Porter escaping from the troopers; unfortunately this was not the result, for the rest of the squad, seeing the disaster, Surrounded John and subdued him, and he was one of the seven prisoners who were taken by the British from Danbury. All that is impetuous action got for him was confinement in the infamous "Sugar House" prison on New York City, but he was eventuallly released and returned home. The incident gave the name "Squabble Hill" to this particularly locality in Danbury for a great many years." The above reference mentions a PARK AVENUE in Danbury. BETWEEN WHAT CONTEMPORARY CROSS-STREETS ON THE PARK AVE. OF THE YEAR 1777, IS SQUABBLE HILL LOCATED? Is it still known locally as Squabble Hill today? Detailed current map reference would be much appreciated. Link: Link to Streeter Reference, CLICK HERE URL: <http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/PORTER.TXT>
I am new to the list and wanted to post the surname that I am researching. My husband descends from John PEAT 1597-1684. John came from Duffield Parish, County Derby, England, in the Hopewell in 1635. He was 38 years old when he came to America with his 15-year old daughter, Mary. John first married in England to a woman named CHARLES; he then married Margaret ALLECOCKE bet. 1621-22 in England. Margaret was the mother of Mary who emigrated to America with John. He married Ann PEAKE after 1635 in America. Two sons are attributed to his marriage to Ann, John PEAT, Jr. (1638-1678/80) and Benjamin PEAT (1640-1704). John (Sr.) died in Stratford in 1678. My gedcom is on World Connect at the following url. I am interested in all ancillary lines that tie to John PEAT. I welcome additions as well as corrections to this material. Living people, sources and notes are shielded on my World Connect site; however, I would be happy to supply further information to anyone researching these lines. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=huds My husband's grandfather was 1.. Edwin Belmore PEET (1883-1947) b Belmore, Long Island, New York son of 2. Everitt PEET (1858-1933) b West Farms, Westchester Co., New York son of 3. Theodore Oscar PEET (1836-1902) b West Farms, Westchester Co., NY son of 4. Joseph PEET (1813-1860) born Stratford, son of 5. William PEET (1778- ?) born Stratford, son of 6. Gideon PEET (1742- ?) born Stratford, son of 7. Joseph PEET (1696/97-1755) born Stratford, son of 8. John PEET III (1672-1709/10) born Stratford, son of 9. John PEAT, Jr. (1638-1678/80) born Stratford, son of 10. John PEAT (1597-1684) born England I look forward to conversing with all interested parties. Thank you. Lonna Jean Conroy
Posted on: Fairfield Co. Ct Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ct/Fairfield/13401 Surname: MULVIHILL ------------------------- John, I can't help you with the COX family, but I am trying to find out more about William MULVIHILL and his twelve children, one of whom was my grandfather, John MULVIHILL, b. ca 1880-85, of Danbury, Fairfield Co., CT and Waterbury, which is just over the state line in New York. Some of William's other sons were Daniel, a Naval officer, and, I believe, Cornelius, who may be the person you are looking for, but I don't have a complete listing. John MULVIHILL married Mary Louise HUNTER in 1910 in Danbury, but they were separated within a few years and their only child, my mother, never knew her father very well. >From a circa 1890's business directory for Danbury, it appears that William MULVIHILL was proprietor of a hotel on Main St., and some of his grown children were Danbury residents as well. Would appreciate learning more about this family.

I went to the Church rectory and asked for copies of marriage and baptismal certificates. After quite some conversation with the secretary she gave me copies of the certificates I requested. I gave them a small donation. I would think writing would get the same results. Janet at dap360@mindspring.com
