    1. [CTFAIRFI] Is this standard procedue?
    2. Hello All: Last Monday I went to the Ridgefield, Ct. Town Clerk office to locate some records. I did locate 3 different notations which pertained to my family. These were all in the mid 1700's so, of course, were only one line each on a page of many listings. They were very busy and short-handed and could not give me a copy so I filled out the form - gave them $15.00 for 3 copies and, unaware of their procedure - and left. I received yesterday 3 printed forms with the ancestors names filled in - with the certification - and no actual copies from the books. I was very disappointed that they did not give me actual copies from the books. I certainly understand that they do not want just anyone to make copies from these delicate records - in fact I know that 2 of the pages were encased in plastic to preserve them - one was not. Frankly, I could have copied down the information myself and saved the $15.00 as, to me, it was much more important to have copies from the original books than the certification. What is done is done but would appreciate any comments if this is the usual procedure with the records in Fairfield County - this is the first time I have run into this and have received many copies from all over. Thank you - Ahlive

    2. Edenne, We have been trying to get in touch with you, and your messages keep returning. Please send new e-mail address. I noted that you had David listed in Fairfield, CTin 1790-1800-1810 census. David Allen went to OH with Judge Austin's group the year after Ezra Gregory went to OH which would make David going to OH in 1799. Could it be that David listed in the census was another relative?

Also at the address are John W. and wife Annie, he is employed at Bridgeport Hardware Manufacturing. There is also a George H. and wife Louise residing at 43 Burnsford Avenue, he is employed at Standard Coupler at 24 Couse Street.

    1. [CTFAIRFI] Re: Mercy Lavinia Warren Bump aka Mrs. Tom Thumb
    2. Lavinia Warren is buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, 2675 North Avenue, Bridgeport CT 06604. It is in the older section, and is opposite the monument for P. T. Barnum. At the present time the house which "Tom Thumb" reportedly built for them at the time of their marriage in 1863 and which he sold to his mother in 1868 when they moved to MA is in danger of being demolished for a shopping center, and there is a group trying to get it moved out of the way and restored. I have been in the house, and it is remarkably intact for having been so badly abused by the last tenants. The house was divided into four apartments.

    2. Jesse Haight of Duchess County had a daughter Robey (Ruby). Maybe this is the woman you are looking for. She had a sister Sarah, and brothers Stephen and Adam. Adam is my 3rd G Grandfather. Michael Haight

    2. John W. Keating III
    3. Norm, et al, Regarding your question regading vertical files, here's the historical society's description from their web pages at www.stamfordhistory.org, under the Research Library heading... They've an index into the list, which was where I found John Keating's name. Also included are a 10-volume survey of Stamford’s historic structures, over 1200 vertical files containing information on local organizations, schools, government, biographies, transportation and churches & synagogues, city directories, W. P. A. Stamford Cemetery inscription volume. Regarding the information passed via email, quite pleased with the information. Even though it doesn't show a firm link, it does open up some new avenues of investigation. Good Searching! 1. [CTFAIRFI] RE: Biographaphy - John Keating, Sr.
    2. John W. Keating III
    3. Ms. Cardinal, While I don't see a direct match, it may pay to keep in touch, as my Hylands were from Dublin as well. My Julia Ann Hyland was born in Dublin in 1828 to Andrew Hyland and Elizabeth Moore. Andrew's father was George Hyland. The family home was where the courthouse currently stands. Julia had several siblings, among them Patrick Hyland (who was adopted, had a dyeing business (in Stamford?)), George (who had a construction company in Stamford), Thomas (who had a dairy in Plainfield, NJ), William (who had a grocery store), James, Joseph, Catherine, Mary, Elizabeth, and Emma. Andrew died young. The older boys brought the rest of the family to the US. (To Stamford?) Mother Elizabeth died the next winter, and Catherine, John, and Joseph died soon afterwards. For those on the Hyland-L list: Does these names/jobs sound familar to anyone? For those on the Fairfield County list: Are there any cemetary listings for Fairfield Co. that could provide time of death for Elizabeth, Catherine, James, or Joseph? Could any of the businesses mentioned be listed anywhere? Thanks! 1. [CTFAIRFI] FW: Biographaphy - John Keating, Sr.
    2. John W. Keating III
    3. Hello! Does anyone have any Keatings or Hylands in or local to Stamford or Darien, Connecticut? If so, I'd like to get in touch with you. My family settled briefly in Stamford in the late 1850's after coming to the states. Wondering if they perhaps stayed with or near family before moving south to Maryland, I asked the Stamford Historical Society for information on a John F. Keating Sr in their vertical files, and they replied with the following. (What particularly piques my interest is that my immigrant ancesters were John C. and Jula A. (Hyland) Keating. Note the Keating/Hyland couple below.) Slán! John -----Original Message----- Mr.Keating: In reply to your email, dated 29 May 2001, the Vertical File you referred to only contains 3 postcards addressed to Hon. Judge John F. Keating, Sr. He was the Mayor of Stamford, CT from 1924-1926 (Republican). I was not successful in locating any information regarding your g-g-grandfather - the Stamford City Directories we have begin in 1872 and the only reference I could find in addition to the cards, are land transactions in the Stamford Land Records for a John Keating in 1764 and Robert Keating in 1882. Buried in St. John's Cemetery, in Darien, CT, is Julia S. Keating, b.1862 - d.1931; Mary Keating Hyland, wife of George F., Jr., d.29 Sept. 1904, age 36y.9m.8d.; Mary F. Keating Connell, wife of Martin, b.15 May 1854- d.22 June 1900. Good luck with your research.

    2. Kathy Campbell
    3. Can anyone tell me how I would go about finding an obit for someone in Danbury for whom I only have a name? Her name was Mary BLACKMAN, and she died sometime after 1900. In the 1900 census, she was supposedly living with her son, John S. LENT, and his family. I also need to find an obituary for Anna Rebecca (LOCKWOOD) LENT, who died in Danbury, 26 Oct. 1899. Are there obits available that far back? Thanks. Kathy

    3. To all, Thanks to everyone who offered me advice about tracking down vital stats information in Danbury. I have some very useful leads! Also, the reason given to me by the Danbury Town Clerk for not responding to written requests was, as suggested by someone else, a shortage of personnel to handle the growing number of requests. What a great list! Thanks to all who helped! Pat Tampa _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
