Jan 1836, Scotland), mother of John Silliman Macnie (b. 1874, Newburgh-on-the-Hudson, NY). Married in or after 1867 (the date her husband emigrated to the US from Scotland). May died between 1874 and 1880. Not sure if she was married or died in Fairfield County, but thought I'd try to find out. Add'l identifying information: May was born in Connecticut (no idea when); her mother's name was Deborah. Deborah was a widow by 1880; she was living in Easton, Fairfield, Connecticut, with May's son and widowed husband at that time.

It's also *very helpful to post the town/locality in the header of your query, as well. Since town records are held at the town level in CT, knowing even a vague idea of the town, greatly helps folks help you. :-D If you are familiar with the town, you may want to go to the Fairfield Co. CT pages at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi, then click on the "Town Index" link and then scroll down to the towns. Wherever possible, we have listed newspapers and other resources which may help you with your search. Since the obituary would have been within the last few years, checking with the newspaper in the town in which Sophia lived/died (and perhaps some local neighboring newspapers, too), might help you. Some newspapers even have recent obituaries online. Good luck, Maureen Mead A USGenWeb Project Volunteer and CC http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi

Training day probably refers to militia training, which is often referred to as the train band. Every town had one and all able bodied men had to take part. Abby
Doe anyone know the meaning of the Training Day I have put in bold type???? And the discription of Wolf Pits and Wild Cats. Where I amight obtain a copy of his probated will from Fairfield, Connecticut. thanks Lucie Vaccaro-Bailey The fully authenticated records of the Baileys date back to Benoni, who was born cicra 1697. He resided a mile or two from the little village of Bethel, situated on the borders of Danbury. His farm was close to, if it did not join, that of the members of the Benedict family. In his will, probated at Fairfield, Connecticut, at the time of his death, which took place in May, 1792, he bequeathed his lands to his children, using the primitive names given the sections by the early settlers. One tract was called Wolf Pits, and we know that another section was named Wild Cats. He lived to the ripe age of 96, and died on "Training Day." He was buried in the old Bethel burial-ground at the back of the church, and the inscription on his tombstone was still visible a few years ago.

I stood in Put's hill overlooking Rt1 (King's Highway). That is in what used to be called the Horseneck. That was on the border on NY and I think Rye had claim to that land before Greenwich bought the land from the Horsacky? Indians. There are some records that survived the wars. I would start here http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctfairfi/pages/ctfairfi_welcome.html The Greenwich Hist Soc would have the records but they are always very busy. I think SP Mead published a book with the records. There was a Merrit family with early land holdings in the Horseneck if I remember correctly. Actually, the records become less sparce after 1800 and better still after 1812.

I have gotten my fairshare of free-bees from the Knapps and would be more than happy to return the favor. I have learned a great deal about CT Knapps. I will need more information than what you have provided to even start guessing. Locations are important. There were probably 500 or more Knapp descendents of the Nic Knapp line alone by the R-War. Believe it or not Israel was a popular name at that time. Do you think yours were from CT? Yes, that gap is huge. It is more than the average life expentancy at that time. However, John Mesnard and Mary Knapp had two children when they were in their 40s. It was very strange the had children before and after the R-War but none during. I suppose it was the stress. The Mesnards lived in the area that was fairly lawless and raided by the British and robbed by others.
