I now have 2100 of our 3100+ member Humphrey database uploaded. ---------------------------------------------------- We’re looking for living descendants of Jonas, also of Ozias Sr. & Ozias Jr., born 1763 & 1789, respectively, in Simsbury, Connecticut. Also, descendants of David Carlisle Humphreys, born 1741 in Ireland, immigrated to Greenville, Virginia about 1764. We have a Humphrey surname DNA project at FamilyTreeDna (FTDNA), & we’ll subsidize DNA testing of participants in order to solve the genealogical puzzles: who were the parents of Michael Humphrey of Lyme Regis, born 1620, & what's the common ancestry of Jonas & Michael? We’ve enjoyed some initial success with the DNA testing to delineate & verify Humphrey lineages in New England & Europe.

Surnames: SEELEY, BEARDSLEY, SMITH, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/TZ.2ADE/4427 Message Board Post: Hello, These are not my relatives, but feel that someone may be interested in the information. It comes from the 1892 Portrait & Biographical Album of Genesee, Lapeer & Tuscola Counties, in Michigan. Chapman Bros. Colleen DANIEL H. SEELEY resides on section 3, Genesee Township, Genesee County, He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., April 13, 1805, and is a son of Lewis Seeley, also a native of Connecticut, who was a shoemaker by trade and a farmer by calling. He removed at an early day, in fact, one year subsequent to our subject's birth, to Saratoga County, N. Y., and there bought a farm. In 1818 he removed to Orleans County, and thence to Monroe County, where he was engaged in farming until he came to Michigan, in 1886. Our subject located at once in Oakland County, coming hither by way of Canada by team and settling in 1837, locating in what is now the city of flint, but which at that time contained only ten families and seven buildings. There were plenty of Indians, however, and it was not so unusual to see as many as four hundred braves with their families pass the home. After removing to Genesee Township, our subject's father died, in 1841. The mother of the family was Anna Beardsley, a native of Connecticut. She died at the age of eighty-nine years. They were the parents of nine children, all of whom lived to manhood and womanhood, although only three sons now survive. They are Daniel H., Orin and Fayette. Mr. Seeley is the fifth child and second son of his parents' family. He was taken to New York when but a year old. He remained with his father until thirteen years of age and then was engaged as a farm laborer, working for $7 per month. When seventeen years of age he began to learn the tailor's trade under Mr. Milling. After remaining with him a short time he went to Salt Point and there worked at his trade, but was discharged because of his adherence to temperance principles. He then went to Onondaga Hill and there worked at his trade. Mr. Daniel Seeley was married in the village of Brockport, Monroe county, N. Y., September 2, 1829. His bride was Julia A., the second daughter of John F. and Sarah (Smith) Taylor. She was born in the village of Pittsford, N. Y., February 22, 1811, and his bride at once settled in Brockport, N. Y., and there he followed his trade. He purchased a farm about five miles out from Brockport, but not long after removed to Orleans County, and thence came to Michigan, in 1835, settling in Pontiac. He left his wife in Holly. He there engaged in the merchant tailor business with Mr. Judson and in the spring of 1836 brought his wife to the West and settled in flint, where he built the eighth house that was erected in the city. He also built a shop and a store, the latter being the second business place in the city. The first court held there convened in his shop and also the first meeting of the Board of supervisors of the county. Our subject remained in Flint until 1843 and then removed to the place where he now resides. There was a log shanty on the place and a few improvements had been made, but he was obliged to cut the road to his house before lumber could be hauled to the place. Wild animals were many and had to be guarded against. During this time our subject and his wife had become the parents of seven children, whose names are Burton B., Bertha J., Daniel Lewis, Frances, Marvin L., Frank T., and Theron V. Burton was born and died in New York; Frances was born in Flint in 1836 and is the widow of s. a. Burroughs; she resides in Mt. Morris; Frank resides in Iowa. Mr. Seeley has a fine new place of three hundred and twenty acres, which he has cultivated and improved to the highest possible degree. Politically he holds to Democratic principles. He has been Township Treasurer and also Justice of the Peace.

The trial was, indeed, a slander suit, but it was brought by Thomas Staples on behalf of his wife, and it was Roger Ludlow who was the defendant. Interestingly, there seem to have been no further cases of witchcraft accusation once Staples made it clear that this could cost the accuser some money (Staples won).
Does anyone on the list know if there is information available for persons who were teachers in Fairfield County in years past? Also, is there a similar source of information for persons who were teachers in New York state ? I am searching for a relative, Mr. Ferris STEVENS, who reportedly was teaching in the Black Rock, CT school in 1961. In 1962, according to his mother's obit, Ferris was teaching in Katonah (Westchester County), NY. All known schools in Katonah were contacted but none could find any record of Mr. Stevens having been a teacher there; one school, however, The Harvey School, suffered a fire which destroyed many of their records and they could provide no answer pertaining to Mr. Stevens. Knapp, :2-3 Re: Goody Knapp, the witch - the following may be of interest 1. A Goody KNAPP [no given name recorded] was accused of being a witch. The STAPLES family also was caught up in the witch craze. Thomas Staples' wife herself must have been an interesting character. At a court of Magistrates held May 29, 1654, the plaintiff, Thomas Staples [of Fairfield], claimed that Roger Ludlow had defamed his wife in reporting to Mr. and Mrs.Davenport that she had laid herself under a new suspicion of being a witch, that she had caused Knapp's wife to be "new searched" after she was hanged [1653]. [see sources in #2] 2. Thomas Sherwood was in Fairfield, Connecticut and Deputy to General Court in Wethersfield, Connecticut when "Goody" Knapp was hung in 1653 for witchcraft. Mary (Fitch) Sherwood [wife of Thomas]is documented as having been personally involved with convicted witch Goodwife Knapp and her Court testimony at a subsequent trial is the only surviving record today in Connecticut's history of that event. Goodwife Knapp is believed to have been the first wife of Roger Knapp, a very early settler of New Haven, Connecticut. As Roger was the only Knapp appearing in Fairfield records at that period, Donald Lines Jacobus in his volumes "Families of Old Fairfield" makes the connection of the two. The witch trial testimony of Mary Sherwood is found in The Witchcraft Delusion - The Story of the Witchcraft Persecutions in Seventeenth-Century New England, Including Original Trial Transcripts" by John M. Taylor, Gramercy Books New York & Avenel, Chapter 10, pp. 122-141, It is actually a trial following the Witch trial in which "Goody" Knapp's husband, Roger Knapp, attempted to sue Thomas Ludlow for defamation of his wife's character and her hanging as a convicted witch. The story of Mary Sherwood's involvement with Goody Knapp is also found in Witchcraft Trials of Connecticut, by R. G. Tomlinson, "The First Comprehensive, Documented History of Witchcraft Trials in Colonial Connecticut, copyright 1978 by R. G. Tomlinson, printed by The Bond Press, Inc., Hartford, Conn., pp. 7-9. You do know Goody was hanged as a witch, right? Although she maintained to the end that she was not. The only thing I have that you may not is this: From: History of the Town of Leeds, Androscoggin County, Maine, From Its Settlement June 10, 1780 Chapter III. Early Settlers and Their Families. Knapp Family. In 1630, a large colony of well-to-do farmers left England under the command of Winthrop and Salstansall and landed on the coast of Massachusetts. Of the number were three brothers, namely: William, Nicholas and Roger Knapp. William, who was born in England, in 1570, settled in Watertown,Mass. His children were William, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann,Judith, John and James. They and their children settled later in Taunton, Roxbury, Newton, Boston and Spencer, Mass. Nicholas settled in Watertown, and his children by his first wife, Eleanor, were Jonathan, Timothy, Joshua, Caleb, Sarah,Ruth and Hannah. In 1648, he removed to Stamford, Conn.,where by his second wife, Unity, his children were Moses and Lydia. His children settled in Norwalk, Greenwich, Rye, Peekskill,Danbury and other neighboring towns. Roger settled in New Haven, and later in Fairfield, where by his will he mentions his wife, Elizabeth, and children, Jonathan,Josiah, Lydia, Roger, John, Nathan, Eliza and Mary. They settled in the towns of Fairfield County. I descend from Josiah and Moses' brother Daniel. Jeanne
