    1. Archibald McCLOSK(E)Y in Shelton circa 1920-1922
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello, I am a brand new subscriber to this list. Having searched the archives before joining, I know that the surname McCLOSKEY has been discussed here before. However, I don't know of any connection between my McCLOSKY line and the line referred to in prior messages. My g-grandmother was Delia/Bridget McCLOSKY who was born in Montreal. She had a brother (and father) named Archibald McCLOSKY. A few days ago, I learned that Delia's brother Archibald may have been living in Arkansas during the 1930 census enumeration, having immigrated in 1882 according to that listing, and having filed his first papers. Apparently, the Archibald McClosky found in Arkansas in 1930 once lived in Shelton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, or so I assume from the following City Directory entries for Shelton (copied from my family file notes): 1920 Directory, p. 332: McCloskey Archibald optician res 98 Ravine _________ Archibald Jr mach res 98 Ravine _________ John plumber res 196 Division av _________ Joseph lab h 248 Howe av _________ William J watchman GOCo h 98 Ravine 1922 Directory, p. 333: McCloskey Archibald rem to Arkansas _________ Archibald Jr mach res 98 Ravine _________ John plumber res 196 Division av _________ Joseph lab h 248 Howe av _________ William J watchman GOCo h 98 Ravine 1923 Directory, p. 478: McCloskey Archibald Jr mach res 98 Ravine _________ Jennie clk h 98 Ravine _________ John J plumber res 196 Division av From the above entries, I assume that the Archibald McCLOSKY in my file, who was born in Montreal in April of 1860, at some point moved to Shelton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and that he lived there until about 1922, when he moved to Arkansas. Then he shows up in the 1930 census for Hot Springs, Arkansas (that listing shows age 69, born in Canada, and both parents born in Ireland, which fits what I know about Archibald). I also assume that the Archibald McCloskey Jr. and William J. McCloskey also listed in the directory may have been his sons, because they were living at the same address. I have searched in vain to find a census index listing for any McClosk(e)y's living in Shelton in the 1920 time frame, yet from the city directories, I know they were there. Even before 1920, there were McClosk(e)y's living at 98 Ravine in Shelton, so there SHOULD be a listing for at least some of these individuals during the 1920 census. What I'm hoping to learn from those of you who know more about this county is where I might look in the 1920 census to find the street address of 98 Ravine in Shelton. That address doesn't seem to exist today, because MapQuest can't find it. If I could narrow it down to one enumeration district, then I could just browse the images until I find that street address. The Archibald McCLOSKY in my file married Amelia Houle in Montreal in 1891, had at least one child with her -- a daughter named Annie. I don't know at what point Amelia Houle died, but Archibald was a widower when he was married for the 2nd time in Montreal in 1931 to Marguerite Alice Benton (he was also a widower in the 1930 census in Arkansas). Archibald died around 1940, and is buried in Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. Up until a few days ago when I found a person most likely to be him in the 1930 census for Arkansas, I never knew that Archibald ever left Montreal, and now I have not one, but two other locations to look at to find any traces he may have left behind.... -- Mary D. Most libraries have the local newspapers on microfilm. I just don't know if the microfilm will go that far back. Last time I used them it cost me $5.00 per notice. Their son Thomas Hobart was not the Martyre, (there are several other possible Martyrs who might do) and he did not marry Audrey Hare (naother Thomas - maybe Martyre). Thomas of the Plumsteadand Snoring lines married Winsofar and they had a son Henry who is purported to be the progenitor of most Hobart/Hubbards in USA. 2) Frances Blaverhasset was not the sister of Ellinor but possibly a neice or grandNeice. John(1481) the father of Ellinor also had a son John about 1509, who may be the father, uncle or grandfather of Frances. If there is another son of John(1481) I'd sure like to know his downline to Frances. John 1509 died too early to be her father, but he may have had a son also (hence the "Uncle" possibility) 3) William(1607) Mann (mJarrad) is reputed to be the first of the name MANN in New England. His brother? or cousin Richard was married to Rebecca Brewster (who became Cowing after Richard's death, by her next marriage to John Cowing of Barnstable, Mass.) There is a documented record of a Richard Mann of about the same age marrying a Rebecca Short in Nottingham, but it is indeterminate as to whether he could possibly be the Richard Mann of Scituate. 4) as to the "ancient" family Tree, there are numerous connections to earlier lines going very far back - none of which I have recorded or pesued in any detail - I have plenty to keep me busy "proving up" already! I am also looking for the birth and marriage info and parents of Amy Woodworth who married Joseph (Capatain) Mann in the late 1700's and moved to Webster's Landing, Onondaga, NY. Also at the state level there has to be a person to contact and the town clerk should be able to help you with this or ask the librarian in Newtown for help. I know this is not the exact answer you are looking for but it just might give you some direction. Looks like you will have to do some genealogy investigating. Good Luck.
