Usually the local library will have the newspapers on microfilm and will do a search for you. It seems that Green Farms is a small town to find the biggest city near the town. If you go to www.libraryspot.com on the left hand column go to public libraries. This will take you to several listing go to public libraries online or 50 state and do a search for the nearest library to Green Farms. Also if you go to www.google.com and type in Green Farms that will give you some idea of the location, I hope. Another thing is if you can call the town clerk office and ask them for the library and also the historical society. I think Fairfield may have one for the county but not sure. I would suggest you follow up at the cemetery. Sometimes you will find more relatives. If you are still having trouble please email me.

I will "hunt "up those probate records although I did search for them at one time at the Ct. state library but found nothing. However, there wa noone free to help me either so that may explain it. I found throughout my research that My 4th ggrandmother, Lucy Ann Brush has been confused with another Lucy but my Lucy was married only once to Silas Smith Downs. Sometimes in family lines given names are repeated so often such as in my Downs and Lounsbury lines, that even I have gotten confused more than once. However the repeatition of names in each generation has helped me to determine my ancestry. I found it interesting that there is not one repeating name in my Mead line. Again my many thanks to Maureen for her most valuable input.

I believe he was in what was Hillsdale or Noblestown, Columbia Co., NY just over the border from Great Barrington, Mass. The children may have been born in Mass or NY as they were so close to the current border. Alanson was married in Great Barrington, NY in 1823. I was up and went through the libraries but was not able to come up with any data that was of use. I would appreciate any info you have on his birth. We have it as 1Jul 1796 and I believe it is in Hillsdale, NY. He is buried in Delmar Twp. outside of Wellsboro, PA. In the 1835 NY census that is kept in Pen Yan, NY I found a record where Solomon states he "was born in Westchester, NY". That raises more questions than it answers for me. I have been looking in the border area on NY and CT as I believe he was born in Greenwich Twp., Fairfield Co., CT in 1753. I have not been able to get up there to prove or disprove my thoughts. All of my research so far has shown that most information is close but wrong due to shifting borders of the states and realignment of counties, etc.. Solomon and Mary are buried at Porters Corners, NY which is east of Barrington, Yates Co., NY. I was not able to come up with Mary's name in any of the records that I found in the historical society. I am a descendant of Alanson and have a large portion of the genealogy of his descendants.

Thank you for your suggestions (re city hall ). There is evidence to show that Seth Brush Downs was born in North Castle, N.Y. but any available information of his adulthood was in Greenwich, Connecticut. I had gone to the Hartford, Ct State Library where so many recods are kept but found nothing and it never occured to me to try city hall. I don't know if those probate records would be in Greenwich but it's easy enough to make a phone call. A word of caution to anyone trying to research in New York state: it is a miserable experience. You are met with a horrendous lack of courtesy and assistance. The way records; especially church records were kept, or rather NOT kept wherever I inquired was shameful. Access to public records is almost nonexistant and any request was met with resistance and indifference. I'm not talking about an isolated incident but rather 13 yrs of research. Connecticut is just the opposite. People bend over backwards to try to help and even when they can't, they try to steer you in another helpful direction. Connecticut seems to take pride in their ancestors and most of the time you will find easy accesss to whatever records are out there. I will call City Hall in Greenwich. I think that is my last hope to try to find out if I can prove Seths parentage. Thank You, Marianne in Wingdale, N.Y. PS. Assuming I am correct in my assumption of my Down/Downes ancestry, I have quite a bit on the Downs line back to John Of New Haven and also alot on the Brush family and the Lounsbury family.
