Lists: I was at the East Hartford Center Cemetery and while I was there, there was a fellow who was apparently checking some old gravestones, eventually his curosity got the best of him and he came over and intro himself, He is Raymond Tubbs, president of Friends of Center Cemetery ! What luck !! of course I took the opportunity to explain about the Mass Bay Colony and the Conn.River Valley mailing list for genealogist.. In the course of conversation, I asked him about the earliest cemeteries for Hartford and East Hartford and he told me that there are NO gravestone prior to 1709, they all have been destroyed in name of progress, weather, vandalism, and so on. Mr.Tubbs also gave me the email of a lady who does research with the old cemeteries, she is Ruth Shapleigh-Brown and she is at the Connecticut Gravestone Network.......this may be a worth while contact especially if you are seeking stones prior to 1709.... The Connecticut Gravestone Network is a volunteer organization that works to protect what members call Connecticut's outdoor museums-the resting place for residents' ancestors, which also display the last remains of artwork and communications from the centuries past. The group shares information with others through cemetery tours, programs and symposiums that teach safe conservation techniques of gravestones and tombs. The organization welcomes historical societies, genealogists and all others who are interested in preserving history, gravestone artwork or old epitaphs, and publishes a quarterly newsletter that informs members about ongoing projects, research, vandalism alerts and other related news, as well as preservation and law information concerning old cemeteries. Members also advocate documenting old graveyards and filing copies with a cemetery's respective community historical society and library, as well as the Connecticut State Library. To reach the network, call 860-643-5652 or write to Executive Director Ruth Shapleigh-Brown, 135 Wells St., Manchester, CT, 06040-6127. The East Hartford pictures will be up around the weekend....many different names..... but the names that were requested....NONE EXIST...many of the later generations had stones so I took what I found and hopefully you can work with those names. Now I will go and put calmine lotion on my black fly bites Cynthia list admin for Mass Bay Colony http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MA-BAY-COLONY subscribe Ma-Bay-Colony-L-request@rootsweb.com
