Dear CT-ers: Am at home now. The person I am interested in is Josiah CHURCHILL (b. 1615 Dorsetshire, England - d. 1686 maybe in Wethersfield, CT). Know he came to America and Wethersfield in 1635. Is he possibly buried in Wethersfield or might he be buried elsewhere? He probably was Church of England. Maybe there is some thing on line about him. Thanks, Betsy Phillips __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! SiteBuilder - Free, easy-to-use web site design software http://sitebuilder.yahoo.com
Betsy, Here is the information I have on Josiah Churchill. I am descended through his grandchild, Captain Benjamin Church. I hope this email helps you. Kim First Generation 1. Josiah CHURCHILL1,2,3 was born about 1614.2,4 He emigrated about 1636 from England to New England.5 He lived in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT about 1641.4,5,6,7 Samuel J. Churchill claims that Josiah emigrated from England to Wethersfield in 1635. While in Wethersfield, Josiah held positions of responsibilility and trust, including Constable in 1657 and 1670 and town surveyor. In 1680, he drew 18 acres in the land division at Wethersfield. He signed a will on 17 Nov 1683.7,8 He died about 1 Jan 1686 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT.6,7,9,10 A DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS. 1677 to 1687. Witness: Samuel Talcott, John Deming. Josiah Churchill. Ls. Court Record, Page 128--3 March, 1686-7: Will Proven. He served in the military in Pequot War.5 According to The Churchill Family in America, Josiah's parentage or birthplace has not been ascertained. There is no evidence that he was related to either John of Plymouth, who was his own age, nor to William, the ancestor of the New York branch of the Churchill family. The original Churchill family was from the southeast of London, England, with some branches gravitating to other districts. There is documentation that Josiah Churchill came from Ipswich, Suffolk County, in the east of England and bounded by the North Sea. Essex County was just to the south, where there was a strong Royalist presence 'but generally was firmly held and administered on Parliament's behalf by a group of Puritan gentlemen.' (History of Essex. Eddwards, A.C., Phillimore & Co., Ltd., Chichester, West Sussex, England, 1994, p. 63.) Josiah has been described by researchers as "a gentleman of more than a medium estate for the time in which he lived, and of reputation in the Colony." He did not hold positions of power, but he did play an active part in public affairs. He served numerous times as a juror, was chosen constable in 1657 an 1670 and was elected as one of the two town surveyors in 1666 and 1673. Mary CHURCHILL and Captain Samuel CHURCH were married before 1659.9 Captain Samuel CHURCH (son of Richard CHURCH Jr. and Anne MARSH) was born in 1636 or 1638.14 There is some doubt as to Samuel's date of birth.
