John Shepard married as his 2nd wife Susannah, widow of William Goodwin, Sen., Hartford, with whom he made a marriage contract, dated Aug. 3, 1691. His daughter Elizabeth Shepard (b. 1660) married William Goodwin, Jr. (b. abt 1658) son of William Goodwin and Susannah. First Generation 1. John SHEPARD was born on 5 NOV 1623 in Lawford Parish, Essex, England. He died on 12 JUN 1707 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut. Descendants of Edward Shepard, Mariner, Cambridge, Mass., 1639. Compiled by James Shepard, New Britain, Ct., Reprinted in the Genealogies of Connecticut Families, Volume III, p. 388 Mitchell's church record contains the following: "John shepard (son of Edward Shepard, before named) and his wife, both in f. c. Their children, Rebecca, John, Sarah, Violet, all borne and baptized in this Church: Elizabeth, baptized July 29, 1660, Edward, baptize Aug. 3, 1662; Samuel Shepard, baptized July 3d, 1664; thomas, baptized Nov. 18, '66." John made freeman at Cambridge, May 22, 1650. We suppose that he removed to Hartford after the birth of Thomas, 1666, as this is the las birth record in cambridge. the first mention of him in Hartford is found in the Conn. Col. rec., vol. i. p. 360. "Receaued by me John Shepherd of my loving Vnkel Gregory Winterton, Thirty four pounds wch he receaued of my Bro. Thomas Greenhill for lands I sold him for wch I made my Vnkel a letter of Attourney, I say recaued by me John Shepherd Augst 4, 1654." Hinman says he was "a man of consequence in the colony." Also says that Edward "resided in Hartford." He was known as Serjeant John Shepard. He lived in Hartford in what is now known as Lafayette Street, just south of new State-House, and owned lands to the Wethersfield bounds. He Married first, Oct. 1, 1649, Rebecca, daughter of Samuel Greenhill. She died Dec. 22, 1689, aged about 55. (Judd says she died Dec. 26, 1690.) He married second, Susannah, widow of William Goodwin, Sen., Hartford, with whom he made a marriage contract, dated Aug. 3, 1691. William Goodwin died Oct. 15, 1689. Her will, dated March 7, 1698, mentioning three children by name Goodwin (John Bigelow and Jonathan Butler witnesses), was proven April 14, 1698. William goodwin and John Pratt appointed administrators. He married third, Sept. 8, 1698, Martha, widow of Arthur Henbury, who survived him. Arthur Henbury was buried Aug. 1, 1687. Widow Susanna Goodwin married, about August, 1691, John Shepard, of Hartford, as his second wife, as would appear by a marriage contract between them, as follows: Know all men by these presents that whereas there is a marriage intended to be had & made shortly between us John Shepard Senr of hartford in New England & Susanna Goodwin of the sam Harford Widdow; he the sayd John Shepard doe upon some considerations grant the desire of the afforsayd susanna Goodwin which is, that the estate that she inherrittes by the will of her late husband William Goodwin deceased or that she stands now possessed of befor marriage with the affo-sayd John Shephard shall be hers to dispose of as she pleas, without any molestation from him the afforsayd John Shepard his heirs, executors, or assigns to be at her despose when & how she will notwithstanding the vertue or force of the sayed marriage; also it is grantted, by the aforesayed Susanna that what estate soever she bringes to the hous of the aforsayed John Shephard, this to abid so long as she pleas, that the sayed John shephard shall not be bound any ways to mak up any dammage don to any of that estatt, by any providence or casualthy or any wayes that may be don. in witness and for confirmation whereof the said John Shephard and Susanna Goodwin have to this pressence putt to ther hand this third day of agust one thousand sixe hundred ninety on. Rebecca GREENHILL (daughter of Samuel GREENHILL and Rebecca) was born on 24 FEB 1630 in Staplehurst, Kent, England. She died on 22 DEC 1689.
