    2. FIRST GENERATION 1. Col. Samuel COIT was born in 1708 in Plainfield, , Connecticut. He died on 4 Oct 1792 in Griswold, , Connecticut. The Coit Family; or the Descendants of John Coit, by Rev. Chapman, A.M., Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., Hartford, Conn., 1874. p. 118 He settled in the North Society of Preston (now the town of Griswold), and there spent a long and honored life, dying Oct. 4, 1792, aged 84. In military life he rose to the rank of Colonel, and, in 1758, had command of a regiment raised in the neighborhood of Norwich, which wintered at Fort Edward. He was also much employed in civil matters, representing Preston in the General Assembly in 1761, 1765, 1769, 1771, 1772, and 1773, and sitting as judge on the bench of the county court and of a mari-time court, in the time of the Revolution. In 1761 he was one of a committee appointed by the proprietors of Amherst Township, in Nova Scotia, and in 1774 was moderator of the town meeting of the Boston Port Bill, and one of the Preston "Committee of Correspondence," He was received into the church in Preston in 1742, and his wife Sarah in 1733. The posterity of Col. Coit have been quite numerous, and, as they filled a large place in the town for one or two generations they have been distinguished from their New London cousins as "the Preston Coits." They have now entirely withdrawn from Preston and Griswold, but the graves of the past generations are numerous in the cemetery east of Griswold church. He was married to Sarah SPALDING on 30 Mar 1730. Sarah SPALDING was born in 1711. She died on 11 Jul 1776 in Griswold, , Connecticut. Col. Samuel COIT and Sarah SPALDING had the following children: +2 i. Benjamin COIT (born on 28 Mar 1731). +3 ii. John COIT (born on 4 Jun 1741). He was married to Jemina on 22 Mar 1779. SECOND GENERATION 2. Benjamin COIT (Samuel-1) was born on 28 Mar 1731 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. He died on 21 Apr 1812 in North Stonington, New London, Connecticut. Chapman, A.M., Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., Hartford, Conn., 1874. p. 61 Spent his life so far as known as a farmer, in his native place, where he became a very influential citizen, as his father has been, often Moderator of Town Meeting, Representative in the State Legislature in 1772, 1773, and 1778, Judge of the County Court, & c., & c. He was also a sincere and consisten Christian, owned the covenant in the 2d church of Preston, now Griswold, Oct. 20, 1754, and was received to communion July 6, 1806. He was taken suddenly ill, while on a visit in North Stonington, died there, April 21, 1812, aged 81, and was buried in the Oit Tomb in Griswold cemetery. He was married to Abigail BILLINGS (daughter of Roger BILLINGS). Abigail BILLINGS was born in 1730. She died on 27 Jan 1760. Benjamin COIT and Abigail BILLINGS had the following children: +4 i. Isaac COIT (born on 28 Oct 1753). He was married to Mary TYLER (daughter of Capt. Moses TYLER) on 28 May 1760. Mary TYLER was born in 1730. She died on 15 Jun 1800 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. 3. John COIT (Samuel-1) was born on 4 Jun 1741 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. He was the owner of a large farm and occupied himself in the oversight, and was remembered by his children as an affectionate and devoted parent. He was married to Mehetabel TYLER (daughter of Gen. John TYLER). Mehetabel TYLER died on 3 Jan 1806 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. John COIT and Mehetabel TYLER had the following children: +5 i. Nathaniel COIT (born on 5 May 1768). +6 ii. Olive COIT (born on 22 Feb 1772). +7 iii. Sophia COIT (born on 14 Oct 1775). THIRD GENERATION 4. Isaac COIT (Benjamin-2, Samuel-1) was born on 28 Oct 1753 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. Chapman, A.M., Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., Hartford, Conn., 1874. p. 194 He settled in Preston, but removed about 1785, to Norwich in Hampshire County, Mass., then a new town, and largely settled from Norwich and Preston, Conn. Here he spent a long life in the toils of Agriculture, and leaving a numerous family to honor his memory by their industry, temperance, and uprightness. They have now scattered, considerably, from their birht-place, but hold fast the good principles of their father. He was married to Ruhamah HALL (daughter of John HALL) on 23 Nov 1780 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. Ruhamah HALL was born in 1765 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. She died on 6 Mar 1845 in Norwich, Hampshire, Massachusetts. Isaac COIT and Ruhamah HALL had the following children: +8 i. William COIT (born on 1 Jun 1781). +9 ii. Samuel COIT was born on 24 Jun 1811 in Norwich, Hampshire, Massachusetts. He died on 12 Jul 1811 in Norwich, Hampshire, Massachusetts. 5. Nathaniel COIT (John-2, Samuel-1) was born on 5 May 1768 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. He died on 11 Mar 1848 in Jewett City, New London, Connecticut. Settled as a farmer in his native town, in which line of business he was quite successful, accumulating property and securing respect; and died in the village of Jewett City, formerly included in Preston, March 11, 1848, aged 80. He bore the title of Captain, which he acquired in the militia service. Other honors were conferred upon him by his townsmen, who had great confidence in his judgment, integrity, and faithfulness. His moral character was beyond reproach, but not until late in life did he make a profession of religion, then uniting with the Congregational church in Jewett City. He was married to Betsey MORGAN. Betsey MORGAN was born in 1772. She died on 13 Mar 1831. Nathaniel COIT and Betsey MORGAN had the following children: +23 i. Col. Charles COIT (born on 19 Feb 1793). He was married to Betsey H. on 1 Feb 1832. Betsey H. was born in 1779. She died on 1 Feb 1832 in Hebron, Tolland, Connecticut. 6. Olive COIT (John-2, Samuel-1) was born on 22 Feb 1772. She died in 1840 in Sunderland, Franklin, Massachusetts. She was married to Col. Moses TYLER on 29 May 1793. Olive COIT and Col. Moses TYLER had the following children: +24 i. Elisha TYLER (born on 2 Nov 1794). +25 ii. Lucretia TYLER (born on 11 Jan 1797). 26 iii. Mary Ann TYLER was born on 14 Jun 1798. She died on 21 Oct 1826.
