The mother of Samuel, Jr., Hannah, spent the last few years of her life at Whately, where she was tenderly cared for by her son and his estimable wife. When the volunteers went to the front she supplied a pair of socks or some needful article. She was blind at last dying 12 May, 1865 at the age of 101 yrs, 4 months, 12 days. I'm trying to find out if this couple had a son Thomas and, if so, if he was the Thomas SMITH who later moved to West Springfield & married Esther BALL. Thomas SMITH the younger and his daughter Esther [SMITH] NOBLE, wife of Stephen NOBLE, comprise one of my *eleven* SMITH lines and one I've been trying to extend back in time.
