    1. [CRV] VERNON, VERMONT
    2. F. P. Murphy
    3. A number of my Franklin County, Massachusetts relatives (including my great grandparents, in 1867) were married at Vernon, Vermont when there was, to my knowledge, no family reason for this. Was Vernon a kind of local Gretna Green, a place to elope to? Are there records of these marriages in their Town Clerk's office? The earliest date I'm interested in is 1806. 3. " Gretna Green" is a town on the border of England and Scotland.....there was a blacksmith there who married folks.......especially those that eloped when they had arranged marriages by the parents. Vernon is no Gretna Green in that sense.....Vernon is located on the border of Vermont and Mass.on route 142.....SOUTH Vernon was part of Northfield,Mass until around 1749. As far as why so many from Mass married in Vernon.......could be number of reasons..... 1. Vermont marriage laws were not as strict as the old Bay State 2. settlers migrating..... 3. elopements....some probably did -- 1806.... you'd write to the Vernon town clerk......for marriage record...
